Misfiring a gun and shooting a hole through his boot would be less embarrassing  &  harrowing than this.  Yet he brought it all upon himself by his very own wish.  In an inebriated haze,  but still.  His elbows leaned against his knees,  propping his anguished head up as it fell into open palms.  If he could just hide,  disappear,  and not be forced to deal with the sour truth of slippery actions carrying sordid consequences  (  having to hear his drunken words cascade from Ada’s lips,  for example  ).  Slumped and high-strung,  feeble shuddering fingers buried themselves in tousled dirty blonde strands and he let the silence sound.  At least one of them could get their kicks.  Once again,  she had him thoroughly speechless.  No witty retorts to sweep the plight under the rug.  He almost felt sorry for himself.

What was he expecting?  Her jumping into his arms?

“  I figured dropping on one knee with a diamond ring would be too old-fashioned for your refined taste,  ”  the agent maundered in chagrin;  what else was he supposed to do if not dip into cynicism?  There was hardly any point in coming up with dozens of doubtful explanations,  like saying he mistakenly sat down on his phone and the conglomeration of letters bizarrely forming a crestfallen romantic's confession was brought to life.  Leon would be an even worse liar if he said he wasn’t picturing her in his future.  As much as the bond tying them together was leaving flushed grazes,  they were nowhere near traditional to share such mundane hopes.

“  We can forget about it.  ”  I insist,  he wanted to add when enervated eyes finally darted at her.  “  Unless you’ve already started looking for a dress.  ”

most  of  the  humor  drops  from  her  face  ,  but  the  ghost  of  a  smile  remains  as  she  makes  her  way  across  the  room  to  drop  next  to  him  on  the  couch .  her  gaze  remains  rooted  to  the  room  around  them  for  a  few  moments  before  she  glances  over  at  him .  what  a  mess  they  made  together .

❛  well  what  else  was  i  supposed  to  do  on  the  five  hour  flight  home  ,  ❜  she  jests  ,  though  it  remains  nothing  more  than  a  half  -  hearted  attempt  especially  as  ada  realizes  her  wording .  in  the  haze  of  all  the  years  they'd  been  doing  this  song  and  dance  she'd  wondered  when  she  had  determined  coming  back  to  him  meant  coming  home ?  she  so  rarely  considered  any  place  a  home  ,  not  even  the  numerous  safe  houses  she  meticulously  picked .

Out of the few things he excelled at in quite an exceptional way was embarrassing himself.  Yesterday was a blur,  like many yesterdays.  All he could dig up in his muddled mind was arguing with his…  roommate after coming back staggering and talking nonsense.  Later he somehow made it to his old place without busting his head open on the curb;  that mancave of a flat he kept around for the sake of having some safehouse.  A couple of trusted people were aware of this address,  but Ada was probably the only one to pay him visits there.  Rarely was it a good sign whenever he would return to his fogged senses,  the battered couch doing his back no favours  &  a pair of piercing brown eyes greeting him before the sunshine got the chance to.

“  You know,  a good morning would be nice,  ”  he grumbled as he struggled to pick himself up to sit upright,  not yet processing what she had just said to him.  It took a while more.  A long while.  Bewildered frown contorting his pale face morphing into worry he attempted to shake off before she could catch on that he indeed was remembering something.  Too late to play an idiot,  wasn’t it?

“  In your dreams,  Ada.  ”  Defensively folding arms in front of his chest,  the agent visibly shrunk in his seat when he slumped,  wishing to disappear completely.  He stared down at his boots stranded in the middle of the room and tried to wriggle out of the escalating predicament,  as futile as it seemed,  “  I have no idea what you’re on about.  ”

❛  hm  ,  is  that  so  ?  perhaps  i  could  jog  your  memory  then  ,  ❜  she  hums  ,  gloved  hand  sliding  her  current  phone  off  the  kitchen  counter  next  to  her .  it  takes  only  unlocking  it  to  find  the  messages  again  ,  because  no  matter  if  he  prodded  ada  would  never  admit  that  she'd  spent  longer  than  necessary  trying  to  decipher  her  feelings  around  the  drunkenly  sent  words .  there  was  no  denying  that  they'd  grown  closer  over  the  years  ,  specifically  since  the  events  in  spain .  they  had  gone  far  beyond  that  which  was  ,  arguably  ,  the  acceptable  boundary  of  what  their  interactions  should've  been  given  their  respective  professions .

not  that  either  of  them  would  openly  mention  it .

❛  in  your  own  words  ,  you're  going  to  "wife  me  up  one  day"  ,  ❜  pausing  her  unneeded  rereading  of  words  that  had  lingered  in  her  mind  since  she'd  received  them  ,  ada  gave  a  small  huff  of  laughter .  she  drops  her  phone  back  to  the  counter  ,  head  tilting  in  his  direction  as  her  gaze  aims  to  meet  his  own .
