Yan Ling (better known as Aby) grew up learning that survival was more important than anything else, for after losing her parents as a child, she and her younger brother (Einar) spent years living on dangerous streets, enduring hunger and resorting to petty theft to stay alive.
While Einar still retained a certain innocence, Aby took on responsibilities far too early; she learned to distrust the world and the people in it.
Everything changed the day Einar disappeared.
For years, Aby searched for him tirelessly, following rumors, false leads, and the trail of criminal organizations that seemed to vanish before she could catch up to them. What she never knew was that her brother had ended up in the hands of the yakuza, where he was raised and molded into a mercenary. Over time, Einar left behind the child who once depended on her and ended up getting involved with the Red Dragons, transforming into someone completely different from the person Aby remembers.
Meanwhile, Aby continued to survive on her own. Without powers, special lineage, or supernatural abilities, she learned to defend herself through discipline, strategy, and tactical combat.
Eventually, her path led her to the Shirai Ryu, where—though she struggled to adapt—she found something resembling a family for the first time in years.
Thanks to Harumi, Aby earned a place within the clan as a strategist and scout. Despite constantly feeling less capable than those around her, she compensated for that insecurity with keen observation, persistence, and an almost obsessive need to improve.
After the fall of the Lin Kuei and the creation of the Shirai Ryu, Aby grew close to Kuai Liang, Tomas, and other allies who would join later, such as Takeda and Cyrax. However, Takeda’s arrival also brought with it something Aby had hoped for—and feared—for years: information on Einar’s whereabouts.
From that point on, her search became even more desperate.
Because the closer she got to finding her brother, the more she began to realize that perhaps nothing remained of the boy she had once tried to protect.
She is a simple, observant woman, accustomed to figuring things out on her own even when she clearly needs help. She grew up too fast, and that made her emotionally reserved; she rarely loses control or lets others see how much something affects her.
Although she usually seems calm and mature, she feels things very intensely and tends to keep them to herself.
She is disciplined, strategic, and extremely persistent. Much of her life has been marked by the feeling that she has to work twice as hard to catch up with people who seem naturally talented, something that fuels her constant self-demand.
She has a knack for reading others’ behavior and detecting subtle changes in people, a habit she developed over years of surviving on her own. However, that same habit leads her to overthink situations and avoid emotional conversations she doesn’t know how to handle.
Although she is pleasant and relatively easy to get along with, she often acts in ways that contradict herself. She has trouble expressing directly what she wants or needs, especially when it comes to affection, frustration, or fear.
Despite all this, she tries to maintain a lighthearted attitude around others. She tries to be funny, but she isn’t.
Beneath all her discipline and apparent stability, Aby remains terrified by the idea of losing the people she loves again.
