Crawling out of my hole to remind people that with this current update to Firefox (version 144) they've gone and dumped in their lot with a buncha lil AI tools, namely Perplexity as a new search engine.
So if the sound of that leaves your mouth tasting of tar, here's what you want to do:
In the url bar, type in about:config
It'll give you a big scary warning page that you might poke holes in your browser. Good. You want to do that. Click continue.
One by one, you're going to need to put each of these into the search bar in the page, not up top:
browser.ml.enable browser.ml.chat.enabled extensions.ml.enabled browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled browser.tabs.groups.smart.userEnabled
Each of these are gonna have a lil toggle icon on the right hand side that looks like a funky double-ended arrow. Click that and the value next to it should change to false. It all auto saves as you go. Some of these might already be set to false by default and that's peachy.
The next best thing you can do for yourself is to set your default search engine to udm14 or Qwant, but for now, we're just tidying the garden a lil bit.

i will never be against piracy ever but i also need physical media to remain
the average blockbuster carried about 3x as many films than that that are streaming on Netflix or any other streaming service, physical media along with piracy is more important than ever.
I thought this wasn’t true, because how could it be true? How could one small store have more movies than an online database? So I googled it.
I am surprised and depressed to learn it’s 100% true, according to google. A Blockbuster store was required to have a minimum of 7000 titles, but most averaged about 10,000. Netflix has 4000 movies. (And 1800 tv shows if you want to count those, but even included, it’s still less)
Now I’m even more depressed about the collapse of physical rental stores.
BONUS: They weren't beholden to Who Owns What IP Right Now. They got videos from everyone. You didn't have to pay separately for the rights to rent from the Disney Shelves and the WB Shelves and bler bler bler, and they only STOPPED having those movies when the tapes broke or someone never returned 'em.
friendly reminder that your local library will have lots of physical media and if they don't have what you're looking for you can most likely ask them to purchase it or order it from another library through interlibrary loan
Shoutout to Scarecrow Video- they have over 148,000 titles, most of which you can rent by mail. Rentals have been down in the last few years so they're asking for support!
boosting this for Scarecrow Video. It's also now a non-profit.
the thing is that childhood doesn't just end when you turn 18 or when you turn 21. it's going to end dozens of times over. your childhood pet will die. actors you loved in movies you watched as a kid will die. your grandparents will die, and then your parents will die. it's going to end dozens and dozens of times and all you can do is let it. all you can do is stand in the middle of the grocery store and stare at freezers full of microwave pizza because you've suddenly been seized by the memory of what it felt like to have a pizza party on the last day of school before summer break. which is another ending in and of itself

i feel totally normal about this and the scope of my desire is completely average
D E V O T I O N
It's very endearing to me how many people are willing to keep an eye on a video feed so they can push a button and let a fish in the Netherlands get to the other side of a dam.
It is genuinely baffling to me, in a very kind and positive way, especially coupled with the local news continually going several shades of 'wtf, this thing is a roaring success again and we don't quite get why'. They've already quadrupled their capacity for simultaneous clicks and it's still nowhere near enough and there's just... Bewilderment.
I think people want to help the environment in small but tangible ways, which is hard right now because of.. well... because of The Horrors. And being able to say 'wow! I helped this creature cross a dam' makes you feel good.
I also think that most people can relate to a small, helpless creature trying to get from one place to another and there's a FUCKIN WALL in the way.
But to come back to point 1- Citizen Science fills a hole in the soul that wanted to go out on adventures and discover things when we were younger, but the study of it was hard or we didn't have the money or our schools were garbage. But you don't have to have a degree to do things like... press a button or download and use an app, or count or transcribe notes.
Anyways- here's some Citizen Science links if the Fish Doorbell makes you feel happy and you yearn for more ways to help scientists do stuff:
Foldit (folding proteins)
Fathomverse (sea animals)
Project Monarch (butterflies)
Bioblitz, an event where citizens identify as many species in an area within a period of time
Species Watch (animal species)
BOINC’s Compute for Science
Zooniverse is a website that hosts information on many citizen science projects
Label trees in aerial photos
Count cells in fossils and modern leaves
Digitize Atmospheric Data
Count penguins
US-based Citizen Science Database
eBird (bird identification)
Merlin (bird identification by sound)
iNaturalist (nature identification)
MapSwipe (collaboration between several Red Cross organizations and Doctors Without Borders, update vital geospatial data)
Smithsonian Archives Transcription Center

The duality of Bruce Wayne’s eldest sons (Batkids after patrol)
this may be quite niche but thinking about the mothers from Kneecap the movie and Young Offenders… that gritty angry bitterness that dominated their life and behaviour, which is something i think can be found widespread in ireland and we could do a deep dive into why but that might take all evening…
the fact that the turning points of both movies (sorta) is when they repurpose that anger into not quite love but something like it? resourcefulness?? and how this is the only way they know how to love, the only way they can communicate it???
anyway
Am I crazy for wanting Regulus Black and Tim Drake in the same fic?
writing my silly little stories again and accidentally made this fellow incredibly autistic. is this what god feels like

weep
264 words, no warnings, @dorlenemicroficprompts
Back and forth, back and forth, Dorcas rocked the baby in her arms. “Shh, darling, don’t weep,” she cooed softly, words going unheard by the bawling little thing, kicking his chubby legs and wobbling his lower lip, face red as he screamed and screamed and screamed.
Dorcas didn’t understand how something so tiny had the vocal cords to make such a racket.
“Pa and ma will be home soon. They’re just on a mission with some evil Death Eaters, but because they’re good, the very best, they’ll defeat them,” Dorcas assured Harry. “Good always wins,” she confided secretively, as if it were a gospel truth as old as time.
Harry looked at her with wide, red-rimmed eyes, tears clinging to his lashes. He clutched Dorcas’s jumper, twisting the fabric between his fingers, trying to reach out for something. “Marl…” he glanced up at Dorcas, frown between his brows. “Your Marl?”
Dorcas felt her chest constrict. “My Marl will be back too. Your aunt Marlene,” she smiled, “is a force to be reckoned with. A good force. Her goodness consumes you, makes you want to be the very best version of yourself.”
Harry was listening. When Harry listened, he gave the speaker his full attention, and even if he couldn’t understand half the words, he’d give it his very best. “Our Marl. Good,” he repeated softly, barely audible, struggling to enunciate the ‘d’. He gave it his very best.
Dorcas cupped his cheek, and tapped his nose with her own, “You. Good.”
Harry returned her watery smile, and peered up at her intently, “You. Good.”
