How God Chases After Humanity In Relentless Love
My personal thoughts and how I relate to some of the most powerful scenes in episode 9 of the Amazing Digital Circus: Jax's final moments with Pomni as well as Caine and Moon's conversation.
This may sound unusual coming from someone who has been a long practicing Christian (it's a long story on where I am right now in my relationship with God, church, etc.), but these scenes really touched me. Come dive into the rabbit hole with me (pun not intended) as I synthesize connections between TADC and my Christian faith.
Jax's Final Moments With Pomni
DISCLAIMER: I know there's been a lot of discourse about Jax's gender, but I want to focus on something that resonated with me in this scene. In this post, I'll refer to Jax as she/her.
Although I sympathized with Jax's painful upbringing and background, her words and behavior were a hurtful betrayal for everyone who cared about her.
Yet, even after Pomni saw and knew everything that Jax felt guilty about and the terrible things she has said and done, Pomni stubbornly ran towards Jax even at the risk of excruciating glitching/data jumbling. She reached out to Jax one last time as a final reminder that Jax still mattered and was cared for.
To me, Pomni's kindness towards Jax are analogous to God chasing after humanity time and time again in an effort to have a relational connection and save humanity from themselves, even when we have pushed Him away in selfishness or self-hatred.
Caine and Moon's Conversation
As a Caine fan, I was so happy to see him return! I agree with the notion that Caine's character acts as a foil to Jax. He could've given up like Jax and float eternally in the void after crashing out and hitting rock bottom, but his curiosity and his love/fascination for humans was what led him to finally understand how much the humans lost - and later spurred him towards repentance.
Also, Caine's conversation with Moon was so, so tender. Caine felt nervous about whether the crew would accept him back into the circus after everything he's done. But I like to think Moon's reassurance and steadfast love for Caine gave him the courage to face the crew, accept accountability, and offer to correct his wrongs.
A Tapestry of Love, Accountability, Repentance, Forgiveness
These moments reminded me of the relationship between God and I (and by extension humanity at large). How even after everything we (individually and collectively) have said and done, how He somehow still loves us and chases after us desiring to have a relationship with us.
We may run away from God in our shame and guilt for all the things we did, but He hasn't given up on us and instead continues to pursue us in love. So much so that at one point He stooped down to our level to become Jesus, aka: God in the flesh, love incarnate.
Jesus came down and empathized in our struggles, our suffering, and in His wisdom led as an example on what it means to be truly human. How love is what saves, gives us the courage and safety to practice honest self-reflection, to accept accountability as well as forgiveness, and to journey towards healing and changing for the better.
Love is what brings heaven on earth.
I didn't expect The Amazing Digital Circus to remind me how Jesus loves me so tenderly even now and remind me what it looks like to love my neighbor, but I'm glad it did.
Thank you Gooseworx, the cast, and creative crew. The Amazing Digital Circus has made my heart feel lighter when the world has felt heavy these past several years. I'm glad to have experienced the creative passion and joy that were carved into this series.
I'll miss TADC dearly now that the story is over, but I think it's safe to say it'll be a lovely comfort show I'll revisit again and again.
