Soph, they/them. SophCat on AO3. Fandom old, disabled folk, bi lesbian, regularly vagueblogging about academia. Current and ongoing obsessions include Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Arrowverse (esp Legends of Tomorrow/The Flash), The Magnus Protocol/Archives, Buffy the Vampire Slayer... ♿️♾️🏳️🌈 Jett Reno usericon by @awfuckward
So before I accidentally deleted my blog last year (I'm hopeless, it's my brand) I had a shiny separate 'about' page, but I have finally caught up to how the kids are doing pinned posts for that now (I am an old, plus see note on 'hopeless' above). So here is one of those.
Soph (they/them), SophCat on AO3, fandom old, disabled bod, queer obviously (bi lesbian since 2003). Grew up on Star Trek and Buffy and a lot of other sci fi shows and books, had an intense Arrowverse near-decade in which I wrote about 85 fics, now trying to match that with Starfleet Academy.
I do not get to decide what hyperfixations grab me, but I will work very hard to persuade you my shows are Good Actually (against all evidence to the contrary, no one remind me of the existence of Season 9 of the Flash pls). Yes I am AuDHD, no you can't tell me what neurodivergent headcanons I'm (not) allowed to write. When I'm not writing fic I am often regretting academia (disability studies rocks tho). My taste in music is as bad as my taste in TV, but the better end includes Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, Kristin Hersh, Metric and stuff; sorry about all the 90s/2000s pop. Religion is another hyperfixation, fight me. Have been excessively using the em-dash in my fics since before AI meant anything other than Data and the Cylons (how I miss those days). I've been with the long-suffering Spouse for 20-ish years; see #shit my spouse says tag for occasional delightful nonsense from them. Cats like me for some reason (#biscuit). I'm really not as aggressive as the tone of this post suggests but it's 85 degrees F in the house today.
Ships: Many; living that rarepair life. I like gen even more. Responsible for quite a few of the reymir fics in the Starfleet Academy tag. I used to write a lot of dccoldwave and coldwestallen (Arrowverse). Faith/Buffy (btvs) is a longtime favourite which I’ve never actually written. 'Angst' is my most frequently used tag but I'm a very cheerful person I swear. Except when it's 85 F in the house. Warning, #personal tag may contain religion (but more often just cats and neurodivergence and disability life). Multi-fandom blog, as if that wasn't obvious by now.

Strange racists and homophobes on the internet seem to have access to an alternate way cooler version of TV than me. "every white character on TV is in an interracial relationship" "every show has a gay couple in it" "main characters keep having to secretly be bisexual and nonbinary" "every show has gratuitous full frontal nudity" like damn promise?? What channel???
for real though, those DO NOT WATCH OR YOU'LL CORRUPT YOUR CHILDREN lists put out by conservative christian family groups is where I find all the stellar tv shows. Like, shit I didn't know half of those existed, thanks for finding them for me, gonna go watch 30 hours of gay tv now!
For personal context, before I went to the '98 Burning Man festival, one of the things I'd read from a couple different journalists was that "everybody" runs around naked. Which, fine by me, I'd already spent a lot of time in clothing-optional spaces, I'm not fanatic about it but it's nice.
So I got there early and set up a public shade structure on one of Black Rock City's main roads and spent most of each afternoon just watching the crowds go by. I don't remember seeing more than one actually naked person the whole week. I think a topless woman passed by my intersection maybe every half an hour, sometimes once an hour. So why in the hell were people, normally pretty smart and observant writers, coming away with the impression that everybody was naked?
Then I remembered an unrelated passage from Joel Garreau's great book about the history of the outer-ring suburbs, Edge City. Mall developers told him flat-out that they tried to keep the crowds in their malls less than 5% black. Not because they themselves were racist, but because they had determined, experimentally, that if more than 5% of the people in the mall are black, the median white shopper will wrongly describe the mall as at least half black, as mostly black. And not a few of them would describe it, at 6% black, as a mall where "only black people go." Why?
Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.
Same as the journalists describing Black Rock City as all naked. Same as the right-wing religious culture warriors describing television as entirely mixed-race and gender non-conforming. Not because it's even vaguely true, we know that, but because they haven't gotten over their discomfort over the last one by the time the next one comes along. The anger, not the stimulus, is the part that's continuous, so their mind lies to them that it's "all" the thing they can't get over.
Similar effect for the presence/proportion of women in things, by the way: https://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-health/human-nature/perception/how-17-equals-496-the-amazing-multiplying-women.htm
i was thinking this morning about how i categorize fanfic authors that i enjoy like AKC breeds and decided to share my rubric with you:
the specialist: this author has a favorite kink or trope and has written 80% of the content in that tag. you know exactly what you’re getting. they have A Brand™️. no matter what other traits they display, dedicated rare pair authors belong here.
the chocolate box: essentially the exact opposite. this author will try anything once. they have 80+ works in the fandom with no discernible pattern. the shortest one is 268 words and the longest is well over 100k. this breed of author may or may not be related to:
the renaissance fan: they’ve written three things in your fandom: your favorite fic, your notp, and a bizarre crossover with a show you’ve never heard of. you hit “expand fandoms list” on their author page and have to scroll down twice to reach the bottom. whenever you curse the fact that you can’t legally commission fic writers, this is the author you’re thinking about.
the horn dog: they’re here for one thing and one thing only. if someone’s dick is not in another character’s mouth within 500 words, they apologize for it in the author’s notes. they have one (1) g-rated fic.
the rookie: this writer is usually young, new to fandom, or just got a beta-reader for the first time. their fics are a little all over the place, quality-wise, but you’re excited whenever their name pops up because their unique voice gets stronger every time. you feel a personal investment in their development, like you’re an old man reading the local high school sports page and saying “this kid’s the one to watch.”
the live streamer: the most prolific author in the fandom. their works are all over the front page when you sort by kudos. you have no idea how they generate this much work, and have seriously wondered if they have access to an extra-dimensional time portal. their stories are usually un-beta’d and the characterization varies wildly, but their best works are inspired and you’ve read them 30 times.
the cryptid: this one comes out of nowhere every two years, drops the best fanfic you’ve ever read, and disappears. fifteen months after you left a three paragraph comment about how they changed your life, you get a message in your inbox that just says “thanks.”
the novelist: we talk about “filing off the serial numbers” when someone reworks their most popular story to pitch it as an original novel; this author somehow does the reverse. their fics are excellent, usually long-reaching multi-chapter AUs that have almost nothing to do with the on-screen characters except their names. i’d like to extend my personal thanks to this breed of author because it’s the closest i get to reading an actual book.
the reunion tour: this author wrote some of the most popular works in the fandom, but either moved on to k-pop or burned out when canon took a turn for the worse. they put out one new thing a year, often an old draft that’s been haunting them from under the floorboards. their last six author’s notes all say they never thought they’d write this pairing again and “this will probably be the last time.”

honestly sometimes there's no better feeling than rereading a fic you've written and coming out of it going, "yeah that actually this DOES slap. exactly what i wanted to read. fucking nailed it."

You know you it’s time to come back to tumblr when you have a night so bad that it’s 5.30am and you’ve had an hour’s sleep. Not being able to scroll would be a worse torture even than that
Tags: Mutually toxic relationship, enemies to lovers (a blurry line), angst, holding grudges, guilt, one-sided pining, reluctant feelings, hate kink, power imbalance, dubious consent (but not very), under-negotiated kink, knife play, PTSD, emotional hurt/comfort, mother-son relationship, past imprisonment, grief/mourning, serious injuries, class differences, tags may change/be added with new chapters
Summary:
For sixteen years, every time Anisha Mir closed her eyes she saw herself being dragged away from her son, and Nahla Ake between them. Only to get him back and find he's still right there, at her side. And now with every visit to the Athena, Anisha is pulled back into her orbit.
Anisha can call a truce, in the daytime, if that's what Caleb wants. She'll just have to find another way to hurt Nahla in the dark.
Snippet:
Ake's gaze pins her in place. “Where do you stay? When you visit Caleb.”
“My shuttle.” The Chancellor knows where she sleeps, a fact Anisha is painfully aware of. Ake gave her the damn ship, and she has to deal with the security situation every time Anisha turns up at the Academy. She just wants Anisha to say it. To be grateful. Bringing her low is this woman’s idea of a good time.
She takes a step towards Anisha.
Heedless of the stairs she can’t see behind her, Anisha steps back.
“I’d like to assign you temporary quarters.” Ake is saying. “On the Athena. Whenever you’re here.”
Fuck that, Anisha wants to say. Fuck you.
What comes out instead is, “I get to keep the phaser.”
Ake stops a few steps ahead of her, eyes never leaving Anisha’s. “Of course.” Her lips twitch. “And all four knives, and the laser scalpel.”
Anisha’s hand brushes the edge of knife number five, under her bra. It’s a little thrill that, for all the fancy tech in this place, she still has some secrets from this woman. She holds Ake’s gaze. “Did you disarm Caleb, when he got here?”
A flicker of something strange, hurt, behind Ake’s eyes. Anisha savours the triumph.
“We did.” She raises her eyebrows. “But you’re not Starfleet, Anisha.”
Anisha considers several curses in response to that—
—and Caleb is striding towards her, with that smile on his face, the one that could make Anisha forget all the rage she ever felt. “Mom! You made it!”
She runs down the rest of the stairs to hug him.
When she pulls back to look at him, running her fingers through his hair, she tuts. “Did you grow?”
He rolls his eyes, but there’s a warmth behind it that never leaves him, in her presence. “I’m 22, and it’s been three weeks.”
Anisha chuckles. “I’ll take that as a no. Glad I haven’t missed too much.”
The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it way Caleb meets her eyes, at that, could cut into her heart like a rusty pocket knife, if she let it. She doesn’t.
Then Caleb’s eyes lift to the Chancellor, as he gives her a smile that drives the knife all the way in. “Hey, Nahla.”
The way Ake smiles back, like she knows him, is somewhere between infuriating and devastating.

Trapped in a Turbolift: Starfleet Academy (and More!) Fic Event & Roundup So Far
Reminder about an upcoming fic event:
The turbolift shudders, screeches, and shears to a halt. Two characters are left staring at each other, wondering how long they're about to be trapped, what they're supposed to talk about, and/or how they're going to get out of this one. Who are they? Spin the wheel to find out!
Event details can be found here on Tumblr or here on a03.
Any genre, pairing, or rating welcome. Will we get a tender heart-to-heart, a tense escape, steamy sex, or something entirely different? Totally up to you, and of course, the wheel. All Trek is welcome.
To participate, please select your characters by July 1, 2026 and post your fic by August 1, 2026. Works completed as part of the collection will be shared on Tumblr and Discord!
This event is hosted through the U.S.S. Athena, a Starfleet Academy discord server full of cool people who like Starfleet Academy. Even if you don't want to take part in the event, feel free to join us. :-)
---
In the meantime, check out the awesome fic that has been posted to the collection so far:

And when you've been avoiding a conversation for months, a couple of hours is a long time to be stuck together.
Standards of Excellence by The_Buzz (Darem & Genesis)
Our two most ambitious cadets get stuck in a turbolift during finals week, where they discover they have less in common--or maybe more--than they had realized. Genesis & Darem friendship.
