Yay! Day 1 of this challenge! I'm excited to kick this off.Ā
Iāve dedicated my first day of this challenge to stewing and plotting my upcoming project. Iāll admit, I kind of cheated a bit...by starting the planning in December...BUT it was close to new years so Iām cutting myself some slack.
Also the idea for this game literally woke me up in the middle of the night and I couldnāt ignore it.Ā
Here are my basic level design layouts for Number One. Maybe I need some sort of code name for my games? Since thereās no title yet...maybe Iāll just call itĀ āSpace 1ā³. Since it...it takes place....in space...whatever!
Itās not 100% complete but itās a rough draft and Iām proud of it! Iām thinking itās going to be a side-scroller 2D kind of game.Ā
I still want to go into more design details with what I have since I used 0 reference. Iāll probably end up making a pinterest board for my design references but Iām mostly going for a space station look. The station is located on the moon...somewhere. Also, if itās not obvious, I donāt have anything for myĀ āLabā area yet. The majority of the game is going to take place there, so not only do I have no idea what itās gonna look like, but I have to decide on what is going to actually go down in that room.Ā
Itās all vague in my head. Which is why I need to iron out the creases in the beginning in order to make some real progress. Itās the best way to go about this imho.Ā
I went to the bookstore to get some reference books and briefly debated coding this with C++ or Python. But C++ is more for 3D games and I donāt know what it is about Python but...it seems too easy for me. Like thereās not enough of a challenge to write it like there is for Java/script. I dunno! I just have a personal vendetta against Python, but thatās just me.Ā
ANYWAY: hereās my loot. An actual Javascript reference book so I can return my library books (this one is up-to-date anyway), a journal to keep track of my project for this month, and out of sheer procrastination, I made a dice bag for my brand new DnD dice. Why did I get them? Why donāt you mind your own business?Ā
I bought my notebook sticker from ENNBi on etsy and colored it with my copic markers. I love their store so much. Itās....so good.
Also inb4Ā āfor dummies bookā: coding reference books are VERY expensive. The OāRiley Javascript book is like $60 and I think Iām too much of a newbie baby child to get a big boy reference book. I need practice projects and the dummies books have good ones. If itās any consultation, my Java reference book is REAL and very amazing. Meanwhile my game design reference book was like $10.
Also hereās my craptop that Iām making all this on. Iāve been meaning to move my previous laptop stickers onto her but...she also doesnāt leave this room so whoās gonna see it?Ā
ANYWAY plan for tomorrow: make more progress on resource gathering for getting the level and character design down. I donāt think I need to do much for my little alien creature boy but I definitely need some for my main character, which is an astronaut. And uh...I donāt know what those look like from memory.
Letās hear it for day 1!Ā
