For a long time, the global collector and comic community has been centered around North America and Europe. But this gathering was about sending a "Super" message to the world: the passion in Saudi Arabia is real, growing, and incredibly dedicated. We aren't just consumers of pop culture; we are active, community-building participants.

Seeing fans of all ages show up representing the House of El—rocking classic Superman tees, caps, and the iconic 'S' shield—was a testament to how these legendary characters transcend borders.

Unboxing Rare Treasures

This vibrant store offers a delightful collection of collectibles, toys, and memorabilia that cater to fans of all ages. After a long wait, the opening of Pop Mart in Jeddah has sparked excitement among superhero fans. The store is a welcome addition to the mall, taking over the space beside the now-defunct Virgin Megastore. I'd like to emphasize, this is not a paid promotion but rather an opportunity to share the joy of pop culture collectibles available in Saudi Arabia. Upon entering Pop Mart, visitors are greeted by an impressive display of Marvel and DC collectibles. From Deadpool figurines to iconic characters like Thor and Joker, the variety is astonishing. The store features D-stage Marvel Comics figurines and a one-sixth scale DeLorean—a nod to the beloved Back to the Future franchise. Fans can also find premium statues of Batman, Iron Man, Captain America, and even the X-Men, showcasing the store's dedication to quality and detail.

This past summer, from Superman Day to Batman Day, Saudi Arabia's pop-culture scene was alive with the energy of a passionate fandom. While the world watched new blockbusters hit the big screen, I was there to document it all, turning my personal passions into a community-wide experience.

My journey as a content creator began after attending Saudi Arabia’s first Comic Con in 2017. It was a pivotal moment. Since then, I’ve used platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok to create a space for fans across Saudi Arabia and the GCC. This summer, I, along with Son of Sparda, Discover Jeddah's Ali Almenaie, and Comic Verse's Sultan Saad, was honored to be your constant companion, chronicling a season of heroes from start to finish.  

The season officially kicked off with Superman Day on April 18, a global celebration of the Man of Steel’s first appearance. This set the stage for a summer defined by major cinematic releases. On July 10, James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman movie flew into theaters, the first feature film in the newly imagined DC universe.

Shortly after, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps premiered on July 24, giving us a healthy dose of cinematic rivalry.  

Through my vlogs and deep-dive discussions, I aimed to showcase key voices within our community around these films. It wasn't just about watching them; it was about documenting and discussing them with all of you, my followers, turning personal experiences into a collective one.

Our biggest community contribution of the summer came on September 19, just before the global Batman Day on September 20. The community and I came together for a special Batman Day gathering in Jeddah. It was a non-commercial meetup and a true passion project, with a stunning collection of memorabilia from Batman: The Animated Series on display. The highlight for many was seeing autographs from legends like Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.

As a community, we also got excited for the release of the monumental Deadpool/Batman #1 crossover comic in September, which provided a fantastic way to wrap up a truly "Super-Fantastic Summer" for DC and Marvel fans alike.

While we haven't had a big Comic Con in the Kingdom for a while, what truly made this summer unforgettable was our community's passion and proactivity in celebrating the heroes we love. From our meetups to our discussions online, we proved that fandom is a year-round, grassroots movement. And looking ahead, with a stacked year of new superhero movies, animation, video games, and comics on the horizon, I'm more excited than ever to see what we'll build together next. The future of geek culture in Saudi Arabia is bright!

The Saudi & GCC Comic Scene — Bursting with Talent, Starved of Support

Here in Saudi Arabia and across the Gulf, we’re seeing a boom in creative expression. Young Saudis are writing, drawing, and dreaming — sometimes with no training, just sheer passion. But without proper support, these creators are left to figure things out alone.

There are rare success stories. Wayl Comic, co-created by Jordanian writer Zaid Adham and Saudi artist Yasser Alireza, is one shining example of how local stories can go global. But most creators never make it that far. They get stuck in trial-and-error loops, never reaching the publishing stage.

Why?

Because there’s no consistent platform to guide them.

The Missing Piece: A Properly Run Comic Con

Comic Con is not a luxury. It’s an ecosystem.

It’s where aspiring artists meet mentors. Where young writers attend workshops by seasoned professionals. Where creators can pitch their stories, get feedback, and grow.

But sadly, what we often get in Saudi are “Comic Con-style” events that are more about photo ops than progress. When international pop culture brands pull back from Saudi Arabia, it’s often because they’re handed to organizers who don’t understand Comic Con — or worse, reduce it to just a fan event.

We’ve seen Comic Con Arabia handled by groups with no curatorial or editorial experience. That creates a reputation gap. And once lost, global trust is hard to win back.

What Needs to Change (Without Naming Names)

Saudi Arabia has shown the world it’s ready for cinematic storytelling. But comic book storytelling is the soil from which cinema grows. Characters like Wolverine, Black Panther, Harley Quinn, and Deadpool were all born in comic panels before they dominated movie screens.

So why aren’t we treating this medium with the same respect?

We urge the Ministry of Culture and the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) to institutionalize Comic Con by having:

✅ Three annual Comic Cons across Saudi Arabia:

One in Jeddah, one in Riyadh, and one in the Eastern Province

Organized with input from international creators and local comic veterans

Focused on creator-owned content, not just cosplay and consumerism

✅ A vetting process for organizers:

No more Comic Cons handed to companies with no track record in publishing, art direction, or comics curation

Partner with entities that understand both the global language of comics and the local culture of Saudi Arabia

What Jimmy’s Story Teaches Us

Jimmy Palmiotti reminded me that comics are not just content — they’re craft. They are intimate, personal, and empowering.

He’s worked with the biggest IPs in the world — yet he still believes in self-publishing. He funds his stories directly through fans on Kickstarter. And he does it because, as he says:

“There’s no such thing as failure in creator-owned work. Even if it doesn’t sell, it’s yours.”

That’s a message young Saudi creators need to hear. But how will they hear it if there’s no platform to speak on?

A Personal Plea to Decision Makers

To the Ministry of Culture. To the General Entertainment Authority. To anyone listening:

We’re ready. Our creators are here. All they need is a place to connect, learn, and build.

Jimmy Palmiotti told me that creator-owned comics aren’t just fun — they’re freedom. We know Saudi Arabia is serious about its creative future, which is why we need more than hype. We need infrastructure just like we have for the cinema, in the form of RSIFF.

We need Comic Con. The real one. Not once a year. Not run by anyone with the biggest venue or best sponsors. But three times a year — in the right hands, for the right people.

The artists. The writers. The next generation of Saudi storytellers.

Though it wasn’t a massive event with fireworks or media coverage, what unfolded in these two cities was something just as powerful: an honest, grassroots tribute to a character that has inspired generations.

Jeddah: A Quiet but Powerful Meetup

In Jeddah, where this community first found its footing, three Superman fans came together. That might sound like a small number — and it is — but if you were there, you’d know that the passion in that room could have powered the Fortress of Solitude.

There was no formal program. No staged panels or special guests. But there was storytelling. Reflection. And a sense of camaraderie that only fans of Superman truly understand.

One attendee put it best:

“Even though we were only three people, we enjoyed it. And God bless you all for coming in and always showing the passion you have.”

That sentiment echoed throughout the meetup. Known online as FiguresMaster, this die-hard Superman collector made the journey from Jeddah to visit Comic Verse — Saudi Arabia’s first official comic book store — to secure the exclusive Superman Day special editions released for the occasion.

Walking into Comic Verse on April 18th felt like stepping into a love letter to Superman’s legacy. Sultan, one of the key people behind the shop, proudly showcased limited editions of Action Comics No. 1 — including a foil variant and the Damora Edition — each stamped with a Superman Day 2025 seal.

But Sultan didn’t stop there. In true Superman Day spirit, he gifted attendees with free issues of Superman: For All Seasons No. 1 and All-Star Superman No. 1. It wasn’t about profit. It was about giving back to the community and keeping the legend of the Man of Steel alive.

FiguresMaster's journey wasn’t just about collecting. It was about honoring a lifelong passion. He even brought along a prized item: a Man of Steel movie poster signed by Henry Cavill, Tom Welling, and Alex Garfin — three different faces of Superman across generations.

But as quickly as that pride swelled, something else crept in—a nagging sense that something was missing, or rather, someone was missing. And not just someone, but two people.

Batman’s star is set to be placed between Bob Kane, the man long credited as Batman’s creator, and Adam West, who became a cultural icon through his portrayal of Batman in the 1966 TV series. While these men certainly played pivotal roles in the character’s history, there’s an undeniable void that we, as fans and as people who care about the full story, need to address. It was Bill Finger who stepped in and redesigned the character, giving us the cape, the cowl, and the Bat’s silhouette that has become one of the most iconic symbols in pop culture history.

The documentary Batman and Bill (2017) based on Marc Tyler Nobleman's book helped bring this story to the forefront, revealing just how much Bill Finger shaped the Batman mythology and how little credit he received in his lifetime.

Yet, despite this overdue recognition, Bill Finger still doesn’t have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And that, to me, is an injustice that needs to be corrected.

While Bill Finger’s contributions largely took place in Batman’s early comic book days, there’s another figure who shaped Batman in a completely different medium: film. Michael Uslan is the reason why we have the Batman we all know and love today on the silver screen—the serious, dark, crime-fighting detective that stands in stark contrast to the campy version of Batman that dominated pop culture in the 1960s.

If you’ve ever watched Batman (1989), The Dark Knight (2008), or The Batman (2022), you owe a huge thank you to Michael Uslan. Without him, those movies might not have existed—or at least, they wouldn’t have portrayed Batman as the gritty, serious hero that we’ve come to embrace in modern cinema.

The road to getting Batman taken seriously in Hollywood wasn’t easy. After the 1966 Batman TV series, which was wildly popular but campy and comedic, the idea of a dark Batman seemed almost laughable to the Hollywood establishment. But Uslan believed in the Batman from the comics—the detective who was haunted by his past, driven by justice, and defined by his intellect.

Uslan’s passion led him to acquire the film rights to Batman in 1979, but it took ten years of relentless effort and rejections before he finally convinced Hollywood to give his vision a chance. His persistence paid off with the release of Batman in 1989, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton. This film was a game-changer. It proved that superhero movies could be serious, complex, and deeply artistic, paving the way for the entire genre as we know it today.

If it hadn’t been for Uslan, we wouldn’t have Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which is widely considered one of the greatest film trilogies of all time. We wouldn’t have Joker (2019), which gave us a gritty, character-driven film that won two Oscars. And we wouldn’t have the recent The Batman (2022), which continues Uslan’s legacy of presenting the Dark Knight as a serious, noir-inspired character.

Michael Uslan didn’t just redefine Batman; he redefined what superhero movies could be. Yet, like Bill Finger, he’s often overlooked when we talk about Batman’s cultural impact.

2024 marks Batman’s 85th anniversary. Eighty-five years of stories, films, comics, and animated series that have touched the lives of millions. Batman has become more than just a character; he’s a cultural icon, a symbol of justice, determination, and resilience.

As we celebrate Batman’s 85th year, it’s time to recognize the people behind the mask. Bill Finger and Michael Uslan are as essential to Batman’s legacy as Bruce Wayne himself. Without them, Batman might never have evolved into the complex character we know today, and his impact on pop culture might have been far less profound.
