*Throws Sang-mi at Surge*
Sang-mi happened to arrive through a wormhole in Dream Hotel Watts, shortly after chapter 2 of the second main fic. Needless to say she’d be walking into this with even less context than usual.
“Oh hey, another wormhole. And another…”
BG!Surge, lounging on a couch in her provided hotel room, blinked, electric sparks coming off of her eyelashes.
“... Another family member?”
“... Yes,” the tall tenrec nodded. “You’re Surge, right? Just to make sure - your hair is different.”
“Yeah. Except I just found out like an hour ago that my legal name is Ash. It’s still settling in. So… how are you related to your Surge?”
“Younger sister. Mine is named Min-ji, so… I imagine your family is quite different.”
“... From Holangi, are you? I’m half-Nipho… and the granddaughter of Clutch the Opossum, apparently.”
“CLUTCH THE OPOSSUM? He was a criminal!”
“So was I,” BG!Surge chuckled, “and I got better. Besides, Clutch kicked the bucket and left his fortune to my dad, who’s actually a half-decent person… not that I can change my opinion of my grandpa. He used me and Kit, lied to us about NOT being family or knowing our pasts, turned the heroes against each other, and ended up forcing us and our friends to live as monsters for years. Plus his actions led to Sonic going completely off the deep end. But that was what led me and Kit to freedom and the ‘good life,’ so you win some, you lose some.”
“In my world, he just got the second Restoration HQ blown up, was abducted by Eggman, and that was the last we saw of him before he passed on from old age…”
“Oh, you wish. I assume you think Kit is your brother, while Rough, Tumble, Mimic and Metal are just one-dimensional villains? And that Sonic is still a paragon?”
“Rough and Tumble are bad but harmless, Mimic is dead - good riddance - and my Surge has talked at length about how she doesn’t get why Eggman keeps rebuilding Metal Sonic just to get destroyed by her again. And why would Kit not be our brother?”
“He is,” BG!Surge assured, “but the Skunk Bros, Metal and Mimic - Duo - are also part of my found family in this world. A lot of weird stuff happened-”
“What? The Surge I know doesn’t belong with terrible people and soulless machines! She’s a warm, loyal and kind soul!”
BG!Surge looked at the ground.
“Lemme guess: the Restoration GASLIT her to be that way?”
Sang-mi opened her mouth and raised an accusatory finger, only to be interrupted.
“Listen, sis. You didn’t catch me at an emotionally stable time, but I was going to tell you this either way. Sonic the Hedgehog is not your friend. He’s a ticking time bomb. If he didn’t defend Mimic, someday he’ll defend someone even WORSE, and there will be no going back. The bullet your world dodged is going to ricochet back and hit it right between the eyes. You’ll see him for the villain he is. YOU’LL ALL SEE!”
Its sister-from-completely-different-parents paused and looked at it for a moment. It was trembling.
“... I shouldn’t be judgmental,” Sang-mi sighed. “I shouldn’t believe everything in your world is the same as in mine.”
“You really, REALLY shouldn’t. I’m not gonna forgive you for calling my BEST FRIEND a soulless machine, and you can’t convince me Sonic - MY Sonic - isn’t evil. He tried to steal a billion dollars and tried to kill us all repeatedly. It’s a long, LONG story.”
The taller tenrec walked over and sat down next to BG!Surge on the couch.
“Would you like to tell me that story?”
“Like, everything?,” BG!Surge sadly chuckled. “From the Restoration Civil War to my anticlimactic reunion with my parents?”
Sang-mi, shaken as she was by the idea of a Restoration Civil War, gave a genuine smile.
“I want all the details.”
And BG!Surge smiled back.
“I guess sisters fight every once in a while.”
And so BG!Surge spent the next two hours reciting her lore to Sang-mi, from Metal’s quest for gender euphoria to Duo posing as Sonic to get a confession out of Jet. Which is really a shame for Sang-mi’s author, because she has no interest in reading Bad Guys AU and now her character will know stuff she doesn’t-
BG!Surge gasped and turned to face Sang-mi, worrying about the fourth wall being too much for her not-sister, but the taller tenrec was already gone back to her home universe.
(It's been a while since I read Jade Branch and it's not like it's going to update anytime soon. Sorry if I butchered her.)
