i had a casual conversation with Michael Rakowitz. actually i asked him to explain his work and then i listened. every now and again i chime in, but i guess i wouldn't describe it as a "casual conversation" per say. however, neither one of us was wearing a suit, so technically i was having a casual conversation with Michael Rakowitz.
these are the sounds from inside Wafaa Bilal's "The Hierarchy of Being". the show is most definitely centered around the huge camera obscure with all of its many irises that open and close, and the cool images it projects when the fist size pin hole is the only window to the outside world. however, if you are quiet (don't really have to be that quiet) you will hear music. when i heard it i just happen to be standing next to Wafaa Bilal, so i asked him "who did the music?" and he replied (paraphrasing) "no one. its the motors and gears of the opening and closing irises" and to that i just replied "awesome"
here is 1min of the sounds from the inside of "The Hierarchy of Being"
Martin Parr is one of the most prolific image makers of our time. A notable photographer, Parr is also recognized internationally as a publisher curator, supporter of young photographers and for an almost obsessive collecting habit.
Parr often explores elements of tourism, consumerism, class and stereotypes in his work. Social groups, particularly the middle-classes are a recurrent theme for Parr; a demographic that he himself identifies with.
His style: richly saturated colors that seem exaggerated and an unflinching almost aggressive compositional structure.
As part of the Qatar-UK 2013 partnership, Martin Parr exhibits in Doha, classic projects of his, such as “Small World” (expressing his satirical look at global tourism), and “Luxury” (an insight to the world’s super rich).

Tasmeem Doha is the international art and design conference held biennially at VCUQatar. Over the past eight years, Tasmeem has gathered scholars and practitioners of art and design to discuss critical issues and engage with students and local communities.
The Tasmeem Hybrid Making Laboratories are full-scale explorations done through the very act of making. For five days, groups made up of 20-25 students and faculty, led by invited international designers and artists, designed and created full scale semi-permanent structures (walk-in sculptures), and other catalytic interventions.

Khalid and I drifted into Design Days Dubai. We saw a couple interesting things, but what really caught Khalid's eye was this crazy looking chair. We stopped and started chatting it up with somebody. but when that somebody ran out of answers or just got tired of us she/he (i don't remember) passed us off to the designer of the chair. this is it's (the chair's) story.
Design Days in Dubai. Saw some stuff. I'd say about 10% of it was news worthy. I can definitely see myself lounging in the hollowed out leather sperm chair in image 10. Khalid and I got an interview (http://youtu.be/UV8htU16dao) with guto requena (dude in image 5).
i was walking pass paradise row gallery at art dubai and nick was there to reel me in and share the story about the photograph hanging on his wall. adam broomberg & oliver chanarin's "the day nobody died 3"
Samira Abbas tells me about Barry X Ball's Purity Statue.
Art Dubai 2013, I'm in the galleries like a chicken hawk in a chicken coup trying to find someone to talk to about art and I found Samira in one of the galleries volunteering. I asked her if she'd like to offer up a few words about one of her favorite pieces at Art Dubai this year and she choose "purity".
more pics from sharjah. is it crazy that i take more pics with my phone than with my camera? these are camera phone pics. i take these when im too damn lazy to engage my pro consumer dslr (shakes head). it really is a damn shame.

Towards a New Cultural Cartography
In Re:emerge, Towards a New Cultural Cartography, curator Yuko Hasegawa proposes a Biennial that reassess the Westerncentrism of knowledge in modern times and reconsiders the relationship between the Arab world, Asia, the Far East, through North Africa and Latin America.

Courtyard Ornamentation with 4 Sounding Dots and a Shade 2013, 4-channel sound, directional loudspeakers, architectural additions, durations and dimensions variable
In CO4SDS, 4 directional loudspeakers are placed on the walls surrounding the Gloom Ibrahim courtyard. Each loudspeaker plays a pattern of a single percussive sound (dot) that is repeated at regular intervals, creating distinct combinations in various parts of the space. In the best listening location, the “sweet spot” located under the central shade, the four sounds combine to form a reduced version of one of the most well-known dance beats of the region and beyond. The beat becomes a minimal gesture, an invitation for a calm dance in the now empty and silent courtyard. All the sounds are performed by hand, reflecting the artist’s wish to relate so-called “audio ornamentation” with handmade and visual ornamentation. The human voice makes an occasional appearance to transmit a message, acting as text and calligraphy in a rhythmic relation with the percussive dots.
whew. thats the last time i’ll willingly write out all the wall text.

I know this ain't Doha and I'm posting it on the "something doha art blog" site, however, it is pretty damn close. If someone from Sharjah wants to host a something sharjah let me know.
So, his set was probably about 45mins but I got there late and only caught 30mins of it. Outdoor venue. The place was packed, but you get front row seats. Enjoy.
ps. follow this link (http://we.tl/dydbiNZ0Zs) if you want the uncompressed performance, only for a limited time or if you ask me nicely i may repost.
