LAST DAY!!! So I have myself the chance to go and try to draw some action poses, and while doing it I tried to remember everything I’ve read this week and solve the problems that I usually have, and I think I know just the thing that will help me with this!

Let’s talk about trees - a practical how-to for populating your natural environments and landscapes with trees and plantlife in drawings

I’ve seen a lot of people who really want to do nature/landscape drawings but struggle with filling the space. I’m by no means an authority on this matter, but I thought I’d share my observations and ideas about filling nature shots with cool stuff because I really like drawing them and spend a lot of time doing it.

Some observations:

It’s hard to figure out what’s in a natural landscape unless you take time and really make a mental inventory of everything you see. Go explore and memorize

Draw from life and references

It’s too easy to fall into the habit of making ‘convenient shapes’ with trees and branches. Look for alternatives, examine how abruptly branches grow into different directions and split.

Mix and match. I never draw a scientifically exact tree species, I mix the relevant qualities from the kinds of trees I know that fit the image. Combine stuff you’ve seen and your imagination.

I try to ‘layer’ the vegetation. A forest looks empty with just trees. Think about the medium and low-height vegetation and bushes and then what’s closest to the ground and ON the ground.

Take into account what you want to convey with the vegetation; seasons, is the environment lush or harsh, is it creepy or idyllic?

well when I do hands I tend to break them into 3 big shapes 

starting with the wrist then palm, thumb then the fingers 

once I have the big shapes in I separate the fingers

one of the best ways that I learned how to draw hands was to draw a LOT of them, in different poses, while looking at a reference. This is a site that I found useful, 

It’s taken me forever to answer this and I’m so sorry but here’s a quickly garbled nonsense post about expressions!!

There was also this awesome chart that I’m having a hard time trying to find. I thought I had tagged it, but apparently I can’t remember the correct tags for it so I’m just gonna rehash what it was essentially about separating the features and adding them with each other to get the emotion you want?? god I wish I could find the original thing but um here’s my quick version

I feel like there’s so much I’m skimping on but I guess I should point out that the reason why I’m pointing out the entire expression is because each of the features of the expression helps contribute to the eyes feeling more expressive.

Just the slightest adjustments can really affect the overall attitude and effect of an expression. I highly recommend studying how other people draw expressions AS WELL as drawing from your own face. 

Obviously, I’m not the best with drawing hands. But that basic shape helped me with drawing hands best. (Circle works for me too but not as good as that ‘fan shape’ my professor taught our class).

Don’t forget to keep practicing and using real life references–It’s the best way to draw good hands! Take your time drawing them! Don’t rush (unless you really wanna) It’s not a competition.

trust me i have problems with anatomy all the time. if im having trouble i look up pictures of people and try to draw from them. i use this site a lot when practicing anatomy and gestures  bc its just so helpful (i usually spend like 90 seconds on each pose)

Someone asked how I do the glowy thing, soooo, here’s some how to do the glowy thing in Manga Studio. :3 

see if you can express the emotion without using facial “symbols” (e.g. half-moon closed eyes, sweat drops, starburst popping veins, jagged teeth, etc.)

try to feel the emotion you’re portraying yourself, then pay attention to how your body feels.  Are you tense? Are your lower lids tightening up into your eyes?  How do your cheeks feel?  Is your jaw set or relaxed?  How high up are your eyebrows?

look into a mirror while doing the above tip

ask a friend to do tip 2 and watch/take pictures of them

think about how you’d react to seeing the face you’re drawing. If you wouldn’t be scared seeing that expression in a dark alley, maybe that scary-angry expression ain’t scary-angry enough
