“Really? They don’t really keep me in the know with these types of things.” Warren admitted, almost seeming guilty. He never kept up on the comings and goings of the X-Men, and sometimes, he didn’t feel great about that. The X-Men were the closest thing he had to family anymore, but after his run-in with amnesia, it had all changed. Even know that he was back and better, it still felt like they were walking on eggshells around him. “I’m sure they’ll be a world-ending catastrophe sooner or later, and we’ll all get called back. For now, I can relax as much as possible.”

❝ with the way the x-men are at the moment, if you wanna be in the KNOW you’ve got to put yourself in the know. ❞ he scratches the back of his head awkwardly. the x-men weren’t in the prettiest state these days so if anyone wants to keep up with them, their only option is to BE with the x-men. ❝ don’t feel too bad warren. the x-men aren’t organised a lot these days. i’m sure we’ll pick ourselves up. ❞ roberto does laugh at the ‘ world-ending ‘ comment. ❝ sure there will be. i’m sure someone will launch sentinels at us or sinister will throw another clone at us. and take the time to relax. think we all need it. ❞

“fair, but still it stings a little bit,” doug teased chuckling lightly as he feels berto tap his shoulder, relaxing a bit more at the touch. “hasn’t that been the common denominator here,” at the name daddy he scoffed, rolling his eyes playfully before shoving berto a little. “explain to me your fascination with being called daddy because i for one do not get it. you mean the person you’ve still got feelings for?” he mused. “if you go to the gym you could definitely help me out a little bit, want to look good for something i’m planning on doing soon.”

❝ yeah maybe. just need to sort a few things out before i put myself back on the dating market. ❞ he replies haphazardly. sure he’s been on a few dates here and there and done the ODD hook-up but nothing concrete just yet. ❝ honestly, it’s just a joke. i just think it would be funny if someone googled my name and then added daddy. don’t really need or want anyone calling me that i promise. ❞ roberto laughs. ❝ and i don’t have any feelings for anyone. sure i’ll help you ! that’s what friends are for ! so. who’s the lucky guy then ? ❞

“We could, but. My kid’s itinerary is more booked than mine, so he’s–” As though this reminded him to check, he took his phone out, scrolling through an app before putting it away. “Doug’s got him right now. Which means I’m definitely not usin’ you to avoid doin’ laundry while he’s out.”

“guess nothing really changes for us even when the world goes through some massive ones,” it felt as if he was talking about defeat, but he was just feeling how mutants always seemed to get the short end of the stick. “i’d like a friend. my name is carl valentino, i don’t have one of those cool names or anything yet.”

❝ guess not. but doesn’t mean we have to or should stop fighting for change. ❞ mutants do go through a LOT of crap but it seems these days, everyone’s going through some sort of crap and so the ‘ mutants equality ‘ movement has been placed on the backburner. ❝ well nice to meet you carl. and don’t worry : a lot of mutants don’t. ❞

“if i’m good for something it’s clarifying,” he laughed. “dang, way to dump me into the friend zone berto, just say you hate me.” doug smirked rolling his eyes playfully. “i mean at the end of the label the only thing you wanna hear is yes berto.” he couldn’t stop the smile that came over his lips. “doesn’t really seem like it by seeing all of that.”

❝ if i hated you, i wouldn’t friend-zone you. ❞ he taps one of doug’s shoulders. ❝ besides me and a relationship ? right now ? we’re not on speaking terms anyways. ❞ just doesn’t have time for one right now. ❝ or daddy. i’m perfectly okay with daddy. but that’s probably a conversation to be had with someone else. ❞ he looks down as if he’s admiring himself. ❝ to you maybe. but to me, i’ve been SLACKING. ❞

❝ you’re ruining my fun here betsy. let me be. ❞ and with that, he sighs dramatically. maybe action isn’t the only genre roberto should be starring in. ❝ fair enough. ❞ hands raise up in defence. ❝ if i die then i’ll take a month long break. if i die again, maybe i’ll make it two months. i’d miss being away from IT all if i’m away too long. ❞ he muses. ❝ no. i mean yes. sword is cool and all. it’s fun working with people i’ve never met and i help the x-men when needed but maybe some FICTIONAL action would be nice to just ... experience. ❞

“I have a company to run.” Warren replied. “I don’t have a lot of time for X-teams anymore.” It was more accurate to say that Warren made sure not to have time for X-teams anymore. In his past, he was sure to always be on call, no matter where he was or what he was doing. And what ended up happening was is wings getting injured multiple times, the complete and total annihilation of his love life, a death seed that still controlled his life to this day, and also, more recent, the loss of his memory. He knew that hero-ing came with a cost; with all the fame and glory that there was a fair amount of risk. But Warren seemed to attract misfortune like a magnet. And the loss of his memory scared him enough to go running back behind his CEO desk. “Someone has to make money to fund the school. And it’s not anyone else.”

❝ same same. ❞ he shrugs casually. although maybe warren will retort back with a ‘ well my company’s a lot better than yours ‘ or ‘ i’m busier than you ‘ or something. ❝ i mean, i’m not on any official x-teams. if any of them came a-calling, i would be there in a heartbeat. if need some help dealing with new recruits, i’m there too. but no ‘ official membership’. in fact, i’m not actually sure if there’s an ‘ official roster ‘ of sorts. it’s just who’s available at that very moment. ❞ it’s kind of SAD to see the state of the x-men. a lot of it was because of the blip and them having to not only deal with mutants who became active during the blip but also those who came back but roberto selfishly hopes the x-men would have sorted themselves out by now. ❝ you know emma frost exists right ? i’m sure she pours some money into it and won’t be happy with you being a ‘ glory hound ‘ about it. ❞ he teases

“I know, we also have telepaths and they don’t have to throw a punch,” Doug was pretty sure that wasn’t at all what Berto meant, but in his state there was barely anything in his mind that could indicate rational thought at the moment. Doug had never been one to show his true emotions, he had never really been one to sit down with his parents and friends and talk about how they were feeling. This wasn’t his sense of normalcy, but around Berto, there was very little he could hide. Berto was just       sunshine, and even if he had his own things the man would always be there for his friends.

Crying on Berto during movie night was never part of the plan for tonight, all he had truly wanted was to cuddle with his best friend, maybe get a little drunk, get some food and call it a night. Now here he was unable to stop himself from clinging onto a man he’s known most of his life, one of his reasons to smile, and doing just the opposite. “You’re a lot better at that than I am, don’t even know where to begin. You’re funny, You’re an amazing guy and friend, and you just happen to be rich and extremely generous, and yes you’re hot too.” Something told doug he couldn’t leave that part out. “Thanks for listening to me,” he mumbled before pecking Berto’s cheek. “I know I do, sometimes my mind forgets that. Sometimes I forget that I’m not actually alone and that I’m easily replaceable, it’s just harder some days. Especially since coming back.”

❝ exactly ! you’re getting it now. ❞ he smiles, glad doug is understanding that he’s not as expendable as doug believes he is. doug may not have the most ‘ combat effective ‘ power but that doesn’t mean that doug has no value on the team, no-one on the team has any use for him, no-one likes him or, most importantly, he’s got no VALUE as a human being. as long as roberto was around, he will do ALL he can to make sure his friends know how much he loves and appreciates them. ❝ and you know you don’t have to be a superhero if you don’t want to, right ? ❞ voice softens now. ❝ you’re more than welcome to just be doug ramsey than cypher. lots of mutants aren’t x-men. ❞

he continues to lightly pat doug’s back. sure, he wasn’t expecting tonight to get emotionally heavy but doug needs it and maybe roberto needs it as well. he knows it probably hasn’t been EASY coming back from the dead and it sure wasn’t easy for roberto and his teammates. but tonight is about doug. he can deal with his own feelings some other time. ❝ aw dougie. ❞ there’s some light tease to his voice but it remains as soft as before. ❝ thanks for the compliments. but you’re pretty great too. don’t ever forget that. and no problem. listening is what i’m here for. ❞ he squeezes the other tighter in a hug. ❝ you’re not replaceable. not as a mutant and certainly not as a friend. for starters, there’s no-one like you who’s YOU exactly as a friend to me. and second of all, i don’t know a single mutant who’s got the same skillset as you. so again: you’re not replaceable. ❞

Carding might not have even been necessary, actually, since Gwen wasn’t keen on burning her lungs out just to get drunk this evening, “Yeah, I know, but would it kill the gods of alcohol to get me drunk on peach bellinis and margaritas for once?” Now that sounds good right about now! If only Gwen had been prepared enough to bring a bottle of water, “Are you getting drunk with me tonight?”

❝ i feel you. well kinda. i’m used to the taste but yeah, getting drunk on something that tastes like peaches would be NICE. ❞ but it’s not something that’s a big deal to him. he’s been doing this for long enough that he’s used to the taste. alcohol tasting any different would just be a ‘ cherry on top ‘. ❝ yup. ❞ popping the ‘ p ‘ here too. ❝ otherwise what’s the point of me being here ? ❞
