I’m notoriously bad at guessing what’s going to happen in the future when it comes to media, but I’m going to give it a try

I’m guessing that Astrid saw the dogs trying to pick up scents, she has Hiccup’s vest that likely still has scent on it, and she knows Toothless will be WAY better at picking up scents than a dog will

Now as far as Toothless, I’m not sure if he’s going to be angry when a human girl he hasn’t met shows up with Hiccup’s vest but no Hiccup (especially since T hasn’t seen him in a bit) or if he’s going to figure it out pretty quick

But I have a mental image of Astrid having to get past Berk’s generational fear of dragons in order to rescue Hiccup and I’m very excited if that’s the case

Tbh I’m still excited even if I’m completely wrong lol

i’ll post here on tumblr when i finally get some chapters published, HOPEFULLY this week or next now that school’s out for summer and i only have a few summer classes😎💃✨

my job tends to be slower in the summer, too, so GOD WILLING i’ll be able to be more active this summer. i’m so sorry for making you all wait so long, burnout and writer’s block hit me HARD and i’ve been doing a whole lot of reading other people’s works and not a lot of writing my own😅

BUT I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN THIS FIC, and trust, the future chapters are playing like a movie (haha) in my brain a solid multiple hours of every day. rptr is very much alive😌

Stoick doesn’t even HAVE Skullcrusher until the SECOND MOVIE. why are we selling toys of movie 1 Stoick with some random Rumbehorn (bc, as we can all see, unless they’re changing his design (for the worse), this is not Skullcrusher)???

why are the dragon designs so ugly? whose creative call was “let’s give a bunch of the dragons potbellies”?

i don’t know what i think or how i feel just—oh, my god

i haven’t even watched the live action yet. i’m too scared. it’s like they went to my sacred space and moved things around and i’m not ready for the violation (it is that serious) and it could also be really good but idk if i’m ready for that either

That and I love seeing astrid get jealous lol 😆 (I'm a firm believer that heather liked hiccup until she realised what was between him and astrid)

okay, i honesty need to know the public opinion on this because i left it purposely obscure since i have NO idea

it’s difficult with a character originally introduced in a PG series for only two twenty minute episodes, whose original purpose was probably to give us jealous Astrid moments exactly like what we got. HOWEVER, they are in fact delicious. HOWEVER, there are other opportunities for jealous Astrid, and i don’t want to give Heather feelings for Hiccup just because she’s a pre-existing girl character his age. HOWEVER, Hiccup’s kind/charming/adorable/smart etc, and a hero who helped Heather even after her deception. BUT, that doesn’t mean she HAS to like him, it could be simply brother-sisterly. OR, it could have started romantic, and TURNED brother-sisterly

i WILL say i remember thinking she was awwwfully flirty when she was first re-introduced in RTTE. like highkey she might’ve wanted that for a minute

Poor dude's gotta have about twenty appear each time Hiccup's in moderate danger

His family think he was so stupid he lost his leg. He loves them so much but the only way he can (successfully) show it is by doing the thing that'll GET HIM DISOWNED!! All this and the ptsd that hasn't been full-fledged on camera... yet. I cannot imagine Hiccup's daily cortisol levels. AND he barely sleeps. Stoick can never (for his sake, the readers would love a Stoick downtime processing chapter) be given an entire chapter of "downtime" because he will literally lose it from the spiral of "oh wait he couldn't tell us this because of The Disownment Thing". And I affirmed his worst fear! Holy shit!

so many times already i've paused and asked myself: "does it make sense for Hiccup to still be keeping the secret? is this asking readers to suspend disbelief too far?"

but some of Hiccup's strongest traits are stubbornness and loyalty--and now his loyalties are divided between Berk and Toothless (and all other dragons)

logic says he SHOULD have to choose. the Issue™ should be forced

but.........

it wasn't.

Hiccup forfeited. he freed the dragons in the ring no problemo. the Red Death is dead and there WONT be any more raids, and thus no intervention required. everyone (👀) swallowed the story about his leg. heather won't rat on him. viggo hasn't ratted on him. johann hasn't ratted on him. alvin hasn't ratted on him. dagur hasn't ratted on him.

so even though Hiccup knows deep down that this isn't sustainable, that logic says he's going to have to address all the Things™ that are piling up around him...does he really have to?

can't he have his cake and eat it too?

there's always enough going on to distract him, and really, teccccchnicallly, he doesn't NEED to address the Things™ unless he can't keep pulling it off, scraping by by the skin of his teeth, always falling back into place JUST in time, but he IS in time!!

and the worst part for stoick and berk and even Hiccup himself is that it IS working.

hiccup IS smart enough and capable enough to pull it off. his enemies DO have a reason not to spread the secret (if your 16-year-old enemy is already isolating himself, do you go trying to spread the news to his extremely-renowned warrior army-having dad?)

and in Hiccup's mind, he's in far too deep. the HOLE is too deep. how can he bring any of this to Stoick when it's all so messy and dangerous and he's made so many enemies and and and---shouldn't he just try to clean up all the messes first? calm things down before he draws Stoick's attention to them?

but, in his mother's words: "if only it were possible"

and...does Hiccup really mind not having to face his father?

and if he's not ready to face his only family, he's sure as hell not spilling his guts to Astrid, patron of Berkian values and the first human friend he'd had in who knows how long, whom he already feels burned by after letting himself think the girl of his fantasies was actually interested in him (👀)

no, much better to stick with what works. just him and Toothless against the world

this comment is literally like my plot bunny/motivation/brain’s summary of this fic

that’s one of my biggest motivations for having Hiccup not run away or take off with Toothless now, as things start getting really complicated and dangerous the longer he tries to keep up two lives. when he would’ve had to kill a dragon, yes, he would’ve fled, but now…

as long as he can keep things under control and keep up the secret, he can stay on Berk, with his DAD and Gobber and maybe even Astrid.

hell, even the villagers. they’re his village, his people, and he’s spent his life trying to make them proud. that’s never changed, and even if he’s too busy to try publicly winning their attention anymore, he still couldn’t make himself leave

and who would Stoick have then? Hiccup knows that being chief isn’t easy, knows Stoick’s stress, anxiety, fear, for the village and the dragons and the winters, the burden on his shoulders, his need for ice blocks and mead. nor (even if Hiccup would only know this subconsciously) is it easy without a chieftess, or a partner in parenting, especially when you have such a complicated son

Hiccup knows Stoick loves him, but not the degree to which. for Hiccup, he sees Stoick’s love more of the way he might love Snotlout right now: the cousin you hate but you guess you’d be upset if they were gone because you have to be, since family or whatever. he has no comprehension of how all that fear and stress an anxiety is what Stoick feels for him first and foremost, that his son lives in this village he’s worried he can’t protect, that he might lose him the way he lost Valka. and while Stoick might be too blinded by those terrors to see his son, it’s only because he does love his son terribly that he can be blinded thus. and for Hiccup, Stoick is like the sun, like a god

it’s midterm week(s), but httyd and rptr are ITCHING in the back of my mind, ready to be pounced upon as soon as i am freed from the shackles of academia

(sorry, i know i’m edging you. i want to WRITE but can’t so i come on here to talk about writing instead. a lil httyd buzz to sustain me. i’m edging both of us)
