Hello! It’s Sam! With pride month creeping up on us, I wanted to talk about a part of my identity that is new to me, and something I’m still coming to terms with, which is demiromanticism.

I am demiromantic, which is an identity on the aromantic spectrum. For me, I realized I do not experience genuine romantic attraction to people a majority of the time. I mistake strong affection for romantic attraction often, and have continuously trapped myself by thinking I owe people romantic feelings and relationships when deep down, it’s not what I am interested in.

I don’t often get crushes on people. Like, it happens! Just not very often at all. Maybe once every several years will I develop a genuine crush. What I’ve realized is most other times, it’s just a strong platonic attraction/affection. I do like to be intimate with friends, but I don’t want to consider them anything more than that.

I do love romance. Because of this, I can sometimes feel like a fraud. Like… I’m just hopping on the aro train to feel cool? But it doesn’t make me feel cool. I feel kinda indifferent about it. Like whateva

In life, I could see myself being perfectly happy just having platonic life partners rather than romantic ones. I don’t need a romantic relationship, I just need fulfilling platonic ones.
