“You shouldn’t waste your time on worrying about me, Lady Yae.”

“You’re giving me terribly little to go off, you know.” Miko sighed, bereft, put upon. “What else am I supposed to think, Ayato?”

“Only ever think of me that I adore you.” The book finally joined its forgotten comrades and Ayato pulled her close again, entangling her in a greedy hug.

“You do, do you?” Her palm ran up the smooth silk of his jacket and she eased her hand back into his hair, sneaking her fingers under the silver strands to find the nape of his neck.

“Thoroughly.” The timbre of his voice lowered as he tightened his hold on her, leaning down to press a kiss to the side of her throat. “I’ve missed you, darling. And you know how I get when I miss you…”

“Needy?” she teased, and he laughed through his nose, warm and soft even as he nudged her head back.

“Mm, no.” His nuzzle continued beneath her jaw; his whisper went husky. Her back arched as he moved over her. “I get hungry.”

“Funnily enough,” her voice was breathy now with the brush of his incisors across her pulse, “Thoma is working on a remedy to that in the kitchen as we speak…”

“Oh, my little fox…” The chill he sent down her spine… “If only that were the sort of hunger to which I was referring.”

“It was my fault,” Pantalone said distractedly, entranced by her slim wrist peeking out from between her glove and her sleeve. “I wasn’t looking where I was going. Too busy daydreaming, I suppose. Are you all right, dear?”

“I’m fine, I’m fine.” Oh, she… Was she trembling?

“You must be freezing,” he cooed, smoothing a hand up her back.

“No, it’s… I’m okay, really,” she assured, casting an unconvincing smile his way. He couldn’t help but laugh again.

“You’re shivering,” he countered. “Unless…” He pursed his lips, tilting his head playfully. “Unless I make you nervous?”

“What?” Her eyes widened above cheeks flushed from the cold. “No, not at all! You seem very kind—”

“Perhaps you’ve taken ill, then.” He lifted a brow. “Or maybe you’ve got low blood sugar. Though…” The corners of his mouth twitched; he granted his smile a bit of agency. “With as sweet as you are, I’d find the latter a bit difficult to believe.”
