I know I'm making problems about a funny comfort movie, but is anyone else supremely bothered by the sequence in Princess Bride where Wesley is awful to Buttercup and even threatens to hit her (and I think in the book he DOES hit her, though I could be misremembering). Like, I understand that he thinks at this point she betrayed him, yada-yada, but I'm going to be so real with you all, I don't care. I just don't. Like, first of all, his whole "oh boohoo the love of my life is so shallow she's getting married after i've been supposedly dead for years" is stupid, and SECOND OF ALL, I don't really care what his justification is, there is no universe where what he did is remotely okay. But this ugly, vindictive part of his character just disappears when he finds out she still loves him?? And Buttercup isn't mad that he was horrible to her? His capacity to hit or threaten to hit her doesn't fundamentally change her understanding of his character?
If it were me, our love story would have ended then and there, and I think I would have left him at the bottom of the ravine. Frankly.
And I understand it's a dramatic, exaggerated love story and it's not meant to mirror real life, but 1) morality is still real or the story is meaningless and 2) I just want to see if anyone else feels the same way. I'm curious.
YES thank you YES I agree so much with this. I am indeed your target audience for this, per your last reblog on my post <3
He DOES slap her in the book which fills me with righteous indignation for a plethora of reasons, all of which you outline here (all my anger directed towards the author, not Westley, because tbh that moment is straight up OOC for Westley, at least to me).
Iβve been imagining so many AUs of this story while Iβve been rereading the book, and the prime thing I would change is this sequence. Why is Westley killing himself to save her from her kidnapping if heβs so angry with her in the first place, anyway? My brother in Christ, you were (for all intents and purposes) very much dead. For YEARS. Heaven forbid a girlie move on. But anyway, I would change it to have himβyou knowβask her in some roundabout way if she truly loved the prince and find out she still very much loved him (Buttercupβs I died that day line remains unchanged because itβs so good and iconic). His anger with her is even more unjustified when you consider the fact that the prince ordered her to marry him (at least in the book. I donβt remember if thatβs explicitly stated in the movie?). Buttercup did not have a choice. Westley should have at least thought of that possibility.
This is just me being a sucker for communication over misunderstanding though. Alas for me, I prefer that to the unnecessary dramatics of a man slapping his true love *eye roll*
Westley holding on to his faith in Buttercup and trusting that her love for him would remain unchanged even after his alleged death (or at least Westley desiring her faithfulness enough to give her the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to explain herself) is wayyyyyy more romantic than *checks notes again* Westley slapping his true love. Please, authors, refrain from having your leading men slap their true loves. Itβs not a good look.
AMEN. Honestly, Buttercup as a character was the perfect opportunity to write a story centering on a person who is unintelligent and kind of naive but isn't hated for it. And is, in fact, valued and adored as a person with inherent worth and also valued for what unique things that person does bring to the table (in Buttercup's case, dogged loyalty and faith)! And if I remember rightly, the story is SO close to doing that, but I think it misses the mark, like you said. It could still have been a comedy and loved Buttercup, I think.
And as for Wesley, YEAH. And also, why doesn't SHE get to be mad at HIM for being at sea for however many years it was (five?). Is there ever an explanation for why he didn't come back the second he was made the Dread Pirate Roberts? Was he gathering their fortune first? WHY DIDN'T HE WRITE HER? HOW IS BUTTERCUP SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT MR. PIRATE HAS BEEN FAITHFUL AND TRUE TO HER IN THIS SPAN OF TIME? IS WESLEY A MURDERER NOW, IF HE IS A PIRATE? WE'RE JUST SUPPOSED TO BE OKAY WITH THAT? I THOUGHT THIS WAS A STORY OF GOOD AND PURE LOVE TRIUMPHING OVER EVIL AND PURE SELFISHNESS???
So true about Buttercup. The movie improves her character by leagues, I think, but even if falls a bit short. I love your analysis of her character though! Sheβs loyal to her love and true as steel and those characteristics are more beautiful than even her physical appearance (which is harked on so much itβs honestly insulting to the rest of her character).
I think the best comedy is when the story knows when to drop the comedy, actually. The one liners and line delivery? Absolute gold. The premise? Some of the plot points? Also gold. But the actual serious moments deserved to be treated with gravity. They would have hit all the harder with the ever-present comedic lens stripped away for once. AND THE MOVIE ACCOMPLISHES THIS, for the most part, I believe. Which is one reason WHY ITβS GOOD!!!!
Oh yes, I love this can of worms weβve opened with Westley. What was he doing all those years, pray tell? And why so slow in returning to her?? And why on earth doesnβt he write??? He probably had doubts about her still loving him for YEARS before he heard about her engagement. Itβs such a bad look that he doesnβt come to find her til sheβs βbetrayedβ him and he has a reason to blame her for something.
Heβs literally such an unbelievably good character when it comes to strength and endurance and courage and fortitude and I love him. But, man, he had some sad trust issues. Maybe even some abandonment issues. He has the potential to be way more complex than the movie/book portray him as. I want to write him in an AU with a few tweaks and make him as multilayered and perfect as Buttercup believes him to be haha
(can you please write this Problematic But Eventually Redeemed Wesley AU and tell me when you do)
(Do you think the movie is stronger because Goldman was involved so thus it was like a 2nd draft of his story?)
YEAH, you're right about Wesley's trust issues!! Maybe he had it stuck in his head that he could never be worthy of Buttercup's beauty, so the second something went wrong, he convinced himself it was better to put off returning until he had made something of himself? BUT THEN HE GOES AND MAKES HIS INSECURITY BUTTERCUP'S PROBLEM. My dude. I will pour honey in your shoes.
Sound very much on.

Why are all music teachers like this πππ
THEY ARE
when i was 8 i had a very intimidating russian woman as a music teacher- she was both my opera instructor and piano teacher. about a month into piano, she sat me down and said to my mother and i "this child- very beautiful voice, good for singing. i will not allow this child to continue piano. god did not want this child to play an instrument. he told me this in dreams. that is all."
my mom had it written down on a slip so we could remember the exact words because it was so funny. i HATED playing piano and i was definitely not good at it (i did end up having a good 5 years of opera training and ended up being a pretty accomplished choir singer though) and the idea of god sending my incredibly severe and serious russian piano teacher a dream begging her to stop teaching me piano was probably the funniest way it could have gone.
