June 12, 2016. Putting a date on this for when it gets reblogged months from now by people who think the post is about something from 30, 40 years ago.
I am a survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting, having grown up in Orlando and just turned 20 a month prior. If you didnβt know, there were several families who refused to claim the bodies of their relatives due to their sexuality. One family even had their relativeβs name removed from the memorial. Murdered by the same hate with which their families reject them in both life and death.
Many, many people celebrated Pulse. We were told we deserved it. That it was Godβs punishment for our sin of loving the same sex. We are sent messages like these I received in 2018:
We in the community often call the victim count 49+ to include the survivors who couldnβt live with the pain.
The event was never officially declared a hate crime or targeted homophobic attack and is rarely listed as one in databases.
At our vigils for those slaughtered, Extremist Christian groups showed up to protest, holding signs like this:
ID: Me kissing a woman I was casually seeing in front of an angry looking man with a βSodomy is Sinβ sign.
Please understand how much more than just a mass shooting this was. We are still to this day harassed and told we deserved it by some.
This year was the sixth anniversary. The first couple years I received dozens of messages checking in on me on 6/12. Year 5 got enough news coverage for people to think to reach out to me. This year it was my therapist, the woman I kissed in that photo, and a couple of other gun violence survivor friends. People are forgetting already.
since becoming a barista i have noticed a few very distinct typologies among my customers. such as:
the woke left: young and fashionable. visible tattoos. often enjoys matcha, lavender flavoring, oat milk, and cold foam. pretty decent customers.
sweet old man: drinks very sweet iced lattes, pays in cash, puts all of his change in the tip jar. sometimes orders hot coffee and i get scared that his shaky old man hands will spill it and he'll get burned but that has not yet happened and god willing never shall.
evil old man: only wants drip coffee and declares it ridiculous that any other form of coffee exists. some variants only want americanos and these variants are even scarier. watch out.
sweet old woman: might need her daughter's help to order but is very bubbly and open to trying new things. compliments baristas freely and frequently.
evil old woman: does not want coffee and only wants sweet tea or soda. will not tip even if she spends three hours in the shop repeatedly asking baristas to fetch things for her.
errand husband: either stiltedly recites an order to you or shows you the order in their texts/notes app. needs to step out of line and make a phone call if you ask any follow-up questions.
grindset girlie: always wearing scrubs, an apron, and/or a name tag. orders the exact same thing every day and knows the exact change she'll need to pay for it. her regular order is both extremely caffeinated and extremely sweet.
#mamabear: is actively wrangling two to four children while ordering. order changes repeatedly because the children cannot decide if they want a muffin or a cookie or apple juice or chocolate milk etc. for some reason these women are always wearing an article of clothing or carrying some personalized item that says "mama" on it.
schoolchildren: band of two to eight adolescents hanging out after school. extremely indecisive but generally quite polite and tip well.
amnesiac in love: grown adult who needs their partner to tell them what they like. gets asked a question about their own preferences and turns to their partner to answer for them. generally acts like a shy child looking to their guardian for behavioral cues if you try to interact with them and only wants to talk to mommy i mean their wife.
this of course is not an exhaustive list but those are just some of the most consistent Types i get. ok bye xoxo

Was driving with my grandmother and in broken English she says βno eyesβ¦ no noseβ¦ no face. Donβt trust.β To which I looked around wildly in search of this omen of ill portend.
iβm going to say something so brave and controversial on this gay sex blog and it is that the episode of New Girl where Nick and Jess get locked behind the iron curtain until they kiss but they WONβT because they are TOO IN LOVE and Nick is like βnot like thisβ and jess doesnβt know what he means and then at the very end of the episode he just GRABS her and KISSES THE SHIT OUT OF HER and then he says βI meant something like thatβ and just WALKS OFF is one of the greatest romantic episode arcs on tv ever. fucking perfect no notes sometimes straight people do good stuff after all.
I love them so much, a zany queer old man grappling with mortality, a brilliant black woman and former journalist trying to find her emotional footing, and a grumpy old man trapped between wanting connection and grieving his wife
There's also a supernatural mystery, which I also love, but we know why I'm here

ββββ ββββ ββββ ββββ ββββ ββββ ββ CARLOS MIRANDA GIF PACK!
ββββ ββββ ββββ ββββ ββββ ββββ βBy clicking the source link below, you will be redirected to a page containingΒ 222 gifsΒ (268x150) ofΒ CARLOS MIRANDA as Paz Navarro inΒ THE BOROUGHS season 1. They were made from scratch by me, so please do not alter, crop into icons or use for any other edits without permission! Like and/or reblog if using, or give some form of credit.
The Boroughs is also, intentionally or unintentionally, a commentary on the way elderly people are treated and respected. The fact that many older people in care homes are abused, constantly gaslit, or treated as little more than commodities to make money from is not fiction, itβs a very real social issue tied to the private elderly care industry in general. And so is the paternalism and condescension with which theyβre treated, as if they were children instead of fully functional adults.
The Boroughs really emphasizes this point: theyβre treated like oversized children when in reality theyβre simply retired professionals who are still fully capable, and itβs precisely those skills and experiences that allow them to move the story forward. Judy is an experienced reporter, a Black woman who fought her way into a professional career in the 1970s and obviously isnβt going to sit quietly in the face of a mystery or an injustice. Sam is an aerospace engineer. Wally is a doctor with decades of experience. Renee spent her whole life as a manager and knows exactly how to deal with assholes.
These are skilled, intelligent professionals in their respective fields, and they donβt stop being those things just because they get older. If anything, theyβve spent an entire lifetime specialising and building that expertise. I think the series reflects this beautifully, and honestly I find it really important because, yes, your grandparents were people who raised entire families before you put them in a nursing home, and thatβs something people should remember. Theyβre not idiots. Theyβre just old.

I LOVEE to see "old people" being chosen ones. YASSS that bitter old grandpa sick with grief is definitely going to save the world through the power of friendship and healing. I believe it.
