I wanted to share a story my mother told me years ago. This is not for anything other than to share an example of why people are marching in the streets. When I was in kindergarten (South Amboy school district) out of a class of 20 or so little scholars, was one black boy. This boy and I quickly became friends. I would go home and tell my mother about my friend Marvin and the fun things we did that day at school. My mother and father would laugh at my stories of Marvin and I and tell me they’re so happy I have such a good friend at school. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s that my mother told me that at dismissal when she would pick me up and Marvin and I would walk out of the school doors together that other parents would stare at us, would whisper about us, would have such negative opinions about our friendship. KINDERGARTENERS. Receiving dirty looks and comments about them. All because a black boy and a white girl we’re friends. That story makes me sad to think about. That Marvin, even as young as he was then, was dealing with oppression and racism right in front of his face. Today I teach at a school where there are so many young, smart, talented scholars who are stuck in the system, trying to change the narrative. So even though I can’t be out with the people who are protesting, standing up for what is right, making change: I’m still here. I still see you. I still hear you. I still stand with you. I stand with my students, my athletes, my colleagues.
