The bullpen at Quantico was already buzzing when you arrived that morning.
You barely had time to set your coffee down before Hotch stepped out of his office.
“Conference room. Five minutes.”
You glanced toward Spencer’s desk.
He was already looking at you.
He quickly looked back down at the book in his hands.
You smiled.
“Morning, Reid.”
He looked up again.
“Morning.”
There was something about the way he said it that made you pause.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You were staring.”
“I wasn’t staring.”
“You were.”
He looked down at his book again.
“I was looking.”
“That’s usually what staring is.”
He smiled faintly.
“Good morning.”
You smiled back.
“Better.”
Five minutes later, everyone was gathered around the conference table.
Hotch stood at the front with a file in his hands.
“We have three murders in Vermont over the past six weeks.”
JJ clicked the remote.
Photographs appeared on the screen.
“All three victims were found in hotel rooms. All were traveling alone, and all had checked into their hotels less than twenty-four hours before they were killed.”
You frowned.
“Different hotels?”
“Yes,” Hotch said. “Different towns.”
Spencer leaned forward.
“Any connection between the victims?”
“None that we’ve found.”
You looked at the photographs.
“Then the hotel itself is probably important.”
Spencer glanced at you.
“Agreed.”
Hotch nodded.
“We think the unsub has some way of monitoring hotel guests.”
Garcia’s voice came through the speakerphone.
“And before anyone asks, I’ve already hacked-”
“Garcia,” Hotch warned.
“Investigated,” she corrected. “I’ve investigated the reservation systems.”
You smiled.
“Of course you have.”
“Thank you, sunshine.”
Hotch continued.
“We’re splitting into pairs. You and Reid will handle the hotels in the northern part of the county.”
You looked at Spencer.
He was already looking at you.
“Partners,” you whispered.
He nodded.
“Partners.”
Emily smirked from across the table.
You ignored her.

The drive to Vermont was surprisingly easy.
Mostly because Spencer talked.
A lot.
You didn’t mind.
You actually liked listening to him.
He explained his theories about the unsub, jumped between behavioral psychology and statistics, and somehow ended up explaining why certain types of hotel carpeting were more common in certain regions.
You stared at him.
“How did we get here?”
He blinked.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, keep going.”
“You want me to?”
“Absolutely.”
He smiled.
And that was the problem.
You liked his smile.
You liked the way his eyes lit up when he talked about something he loved.
You liked the little crease between his eyebrows when he was concentrating.
You liked how he always remembered tiny things about you.
You liked him.
You had for a while.
You just hadn’t told him.
And you weren’t sure you wanted to.
Not yet.
Because Spencer Reid was your coworker.
Your partner.
Your friend.
And you were currently chasing a murderer.
There were already enough distractions.
You didn’t need another one.
Especially not one that made your heart beat faster every time he looked at you.

The hotel you were staying at was small, quiet, and almost completely booked.
The receptionist handed you a key.
“Room 214.”
You looked at the key.
Then at Spencer.
“One room?”
The receptionist looked apologetic.
“I’m sorry. We’re completely booked because of a conference.”
You glanced at Spencer.
He was staring at the floor.
“Do you have two beds?”
“Yes.”
You sighed.
“Okay.”
Spencer nodded.
“That’s fine.”
You picked up your suitcase.
“Come on, roommate.”
His ears turned pink.
♡ ── .✦ ── ♡
The room was actually pretty nice.
Two beds.
A small desk.
A window overlooking the parking lot.
You put your suitcase on one bed.
Spencer put his on the other.
“See?” you said. “Not so bad.”
“No.”
He looked around.
“It’s fine.”
You smiled.
“You’re acting weird.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“I’m just tired.”
“You’ve been acting weird since Hotch paired us.”
He froze.
“I have not.”
You laughed.
“Okay.”
He opened his laptop.
You sat on the bed.
Neither of you said anything for a moment.
Then you noticed him looking at you.
You raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You keep doing that.”
“Doing what?”
“Looking at me.”
His face turned red.
“I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
“I was thinking.”
“About?”
He looked away.
“The case.”
You smiled.
“Sure.”
♡ ── .✦ ── ♡
The investigation took two days.
You and Spencer interviewed hotel managers, reviewed security footage, and spoke to employees.
Eventually, you found something.
Every victim had spent time alone in a second floor hallway shortly before they disappeared.
And every hotel had cameras covering the elevators.
“The unsub is watching them,” you said.
Spencer nodded.
“He’s looking for people who are alone.”
“And he knows when they leave their rooms.”
“Which means he could be an employee.”
“Or someone with access to the security system.”
Spencer looked at you.
“You really are good at this.”
You smiled.
“Thanks.”
He looked away.
You noticed.
“Spencer?”
“Hm?”
“You’re doing it again.”
“What?”
“Getting nervous.”
“I’m not nervous.”
“You are.”
“I’m really not.”
You stepped closer.
“Look at me.”
He did.
His eyes immediately softened.
You smiled.
“There you go.”
He swallowed.
You stepped away.
Neither of you said anything.

That night, you were both sitting on your respective beds going over the case.
Spencer had been unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
You closed your file.
“Okay.”
He looked up.
“Okay what?”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Spencer.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’ve been staring at the same page for ten minutes.”
He looked down.
He hadn’t even realized.
“I…”
He stopped.
You waited.
He closed his book.
“I need to tell you something.”
Your stomach flipped.
“Okay.”
He stood.
Then sat back down.
Then stood again.
You smiled nervously.
“You’re making me nervous.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.”
He took a breath.
“I like you.”
You went completely still.
He continued quickly.
“I’ve liked you for a long time. And I’ve tried not to, because we’re coworkers, and because you’re my friend, and because I know how complicated it could become.”
You didn’t interrupt.
“But being in this room with you has made it harder.”
He laughed nervously.
“Actually, that’s an understatement.”
You smiled.
“I’ve been trying to act normal, but I can’t.”
He looked at you.
“Every time you touch my arm, I think about it for hours. When you smile at me, I forget what I’m saying. When you sit next to me on the jet, I spend the entire flight trying not to look at you.”
Your heart was pounding.
“Spencer…”
“I know it’s probably a terrible time to say this.”
“It is.”
His face fell.
You immediately softened.
“Not because I don’t feel the same.”
His eyes widened.
“You do?”
You nodded.
“I like you too.”
He stared at you.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
It was probably the biggest smile you’d ever seen from him.
Then he stepped closer.
You could tell what he was going to do.
He leaned toward you.
You gently placed a hand against his chest.
He stopped.
You smiled.
“Not yet.”
His expression fell slightly.
“What?”
You laughed softly.
“Not until the case is over.”
“But…”
“Spencer.”
He sighed.
“I understand.”
“You don’t.”
“I do.”
“You absolutely don’t.”
He looked at you.
You were smiling.
“This is already distracting enough.”
He glanced at your hand against his chest.
“You’re right.”
“Exactly.”
“So…”
He hesitated.
“When the case is over?”
You nodded.
“When the case is over.”
He smiled.
“That’s a long time.”
“It’s hopefully only a few days.”
“That’s still a long time.”
You laughed.
“You’re going to survive.”
“I’m a profiler. I can handle it.”
“Can you?”
He thought about it.
“No.”
You laughed.
“Goodnight, Spencer.”
“Goodnight.”
You turned off your lamp.
For several minutes, the room was silent.
Then…
“Are you awake?”
“Yeah?”
“Can I ask one question?”
You smiled into your pillow.
“What?”
“How long have you liked me?”
You turned over.
“Goodnight, Reid.”
He laughed quietly.
“That’s not an answer.”
“It is tonight.”
♡ ── .✦ ── ♡
The next morning, you found the breakthrough.
You were reviewing security footage when you noticed something.
“Spencer.”
He rushed over.
“What?”
You pointed to the screen.
“Look at the employee badge.”
He leaned closer.
“The same person appears at all three hotels.”
“Exactly.”
You looked at each other.
“He’s our guy.”
Within hours, local police had a suspect.
And within another few hours, they had him.
The case was over.
You and Spencer stood outside the hotel that evening, watching the police cars pull away.
He turned toward you.
“So…”
You smiled.
“So.”
“The case is over.”
“It is.”
He nodded.
“I believe we had an agreement.”
You laughed.
“We did.”
He stepped closer.
“Are you still sure?”
You looked at him.
“Very.”
He smiled.
Then he leaned toward you.
This time, you didn’t stop him.
The kiss was soft.
Careful.
A little nervous.
But unlike the night before, there was no case to distract you.
No files.
No unsub.
No reason to pull away.
When you separated, Spencer looked at you with the most relieved expression you’d ever seen.
“Wow.”
You laughed.
“Still overwhelmed?”
He smiled.
“Extremely.”
You took his hand.
“Good.”
He squeezed your fingers.
“I’ve been waiting for that for approximately forty-eight hours.”
“Only forty-eight?”
“Forty-eight hours, seventeen minutes.”
You stared at him.
“You counted?”
He looked embarrassed.
“Maybe.”
You laughed and leaned against his shoulder.
“I think I’m going to like having you as my boyfriend.”
He went completely still.
“Boyfriend?”
You looked up.
“Unless you don’t want…”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Yes. Definitely.”
You smiled.
“Good.”
He intertwined his fingers with yours.
And for the first time since the case began, Spencer Reid wasn’t overwhelmed by the fact that he liked you.
He was just happy that you liked him too.
