June’s cousin Skippy is currently staying with my friends and the two of them really look and act quite similarly, particularly with their long narrow delicate sighthound snouts, but Skippy’s 22 lbs and Junie is 17 lbs. …It does seem we chose the lesser of two weevils.
Junie's life seems to consist of:
Deciding whether she wants to sleep separately in one of her cozy beds or while tucked up on/against El or I
Waiting to eat dinner
Wagging her tail while enjoying Little Treats like cheese or from brain games or while cooking
Barking to greet interesting people and/or other dogs outside
Whining piteously begging a squirrel to come just a little closer just a bit cmon please a little closer
Graciously accepting the putting on of cute cozy sweaters
Shaking in the car but then getting to enjoy friend time or Smells Safaris in various hiking locales on arrival
Scootling gleefully into her crate when it's bedtime and receiving a goodnight Greenie in return
Honestly seems like she's living the highlife and good for HER we love to dote
Here, have an emotional support Junie for this snowy Monday.

Merry Christmas from Junie and Fable!
The best thing about having an Italian greyhound mix is that she is in fact a mix and can therefore walk on snow without shriveling into the world’s most miserable husk of an animal… her sheltie side has given her at least a little undercoat and a little strength of will, so she will survive Michigan winters with her little horse blanket coat and a lot of blankie-burrowing when we get back inside together….
Please enjoy some snoozing lurcher snoot….

Junie has discovered the joys of [Depeche Mode voice] her own. personal. blanket. And is now the coziest beast on the planet.

The coolest thing about life with a dog is that if you watch them closely and pay attention, their sensory array gets grafted into yours. My little lurcher has lived with us for less than three weeks, but already I am noticing squirrels CONSTANTLY in anticipation of her chasing them, but even more than that, she hears faint sounds I can’t and she smells a whole world I have no access to, but by observing her I get little windows in…. Watching a dog follow a scent trail is incredible because you see their heads trace the path of an animal that was there minutes or hours ago that you as a human with your sight-dominant brain would have never even known had been there in the first place, and if you have tracking experience like me you can even make educated guesses based on the movement patterns of what species they just found — squirrel, groundhog, mole, you name it. It’s like seeing through time! The dog is learning the sound of our Toyota Corolla and starting to realize that when it comes back to the driveway, one of her dads is returning home so it is time to run to the door and throw a party, and she hears it long before the car even comes around the corner to pull into the driveway where I can see it with my human eyeballs. And maybe most wonderfully: living in an old wooden house that moved and breathes and goes bump in the night regularly when the household is hypervigilant can be a whole Experience, but if the dog isn’t worried we aren’t worried either! A dog is a marvelous piece of technology, truly, and one that loves you back to boot. What a wonder!
I’m so proud of my brave little doggie… five days into living with us and she met my sister, bro-in-law, and parents in the same afternoon and not only didn’t bark at them or hide, she actually warmed up to them rapidly, accepted treats and extensive pets from these total strangers, and even ate her whole dinner in front of them… life is scary when you’re a sixteen-pound quivering baby deer of a dog but I’ve watched her gain SO much social and environmental confidence in the last 24 hours! All these big feelings are exhausting though so she’s also being a really fantastic lap-warmer as she naps. I love her….
Nearly a decade after snagging this URL for our future dog, I am so so excited to share that my wife and I will indeed be bringing home a besnouted beast of our very own: meet June (aka Junie, Junebug, Juniper, or Juneberry JungleJuice.) She’s a lap lurcher (half Italian greyhound and half Shetland sheepdog) who has contributed some crucial genetic diversity to companion breeding programs and will be retiring in luxury in our home at the age of four! She’ll be an active companion, and we’re hoping to get her into scentwork for foraging and invasive species detection for community science projects.
A review of our girl from a trainer friend:
“June is sweetness and light in a teeny lil sunbeam package. But she’s also got some spice… but like cinnamon sugar as opposed to cayenne. She has an endearing way of convincing you that any trouble is good trouble and crimes are most certainly legal.
She adores a good belly rub, and is adept at positioning herself at the intersection of scritchy fingers and comfort (see couch cushion photo for evidence).
She was understandably put out when I first arrived, making the threat known by loudly alerting her humans to a dangerous intruder. Apparently the desired remedy was sitting down, holding her snoot in my hands and 3 cheerios. This is the price of her friendship. She’s been largely silent since, except when I was not dispensing treats fast enough during a little training game.
She’s athletic and spry, leaping barriers with ease and out lapping her housemates in the yard. She’s a fair but firm momma to her babies, reminding them that kicking the stuffing out of your sibling is not a sanctioned sport but unlike most of the retrievers I’ve known who largely check out once babies have teeth… she’s still happily playing with and nursing her babies at 7 1/2 weeks.
She is handler soft in the way that is lovely and makes her easy to manage. She seems very environmentally confident (and sorta terrifies me as she leaps into her puppy pen with utter precision avoiding toys and tots).
If she were a fictional character, she would be Anne of Green Gables!”
I’m so delighted that we’ll be living with this zesty little creature for the foreseeable future and can’t wait to spam you all with pics of her wonderful snoot!
