I think in most situations, there is something you can do to change the situation and make it better, even if there may be consequences. In this case, don’t be afraid of the consequences- be afraid of never taking that risk and never knowing if it could have helped. In some situations, though, you can’t change the problem, so you have to just keep going until you have more control over the situation or until the situation goes away on its own. Basically, when you can’t get better, do your best to hang in there until you can.My advice on how to overcome a hard time is two parts: perspective and perspective.1. Perspective: Put the situation into perspective. When something great happens, it doesn’t suddenly mean that your whole life is great, so why would something not so great mean that your whole life sucks? It most likely won’t be a big deal one, five, ten years from now even if it is a big deal now. The average human lifespan is around 70 years- if you can get through this, you’ll have so much more life to live.2. Perspective: Put yourself in a different perspective: look at the situation from the outside. You may think in the moment that there’s no point in living the rest of your life because you’re going to feel this way forever. So, what you have to do is treat yourself like a friend. If your friend were in the same situation as you, would you tell them that they will feel that way forever?Also, if other people are part of the problem that you’re facing, then put yourself in their shoes. Maybe someone treated you poorly. Try to understand why they might have done that. Chances are, they are struggling with their own life and them treating you poorly has nothing to do with you, it has to do with them.Try to keep the bigger picture in mind- your goals in life. As Nietzsche said, “he who has a why to live for can bear almost any how,” meaning that if you have a reason to live, you can make it through this hard time. So it doesn’t matter what the why is, whether it’s to one day become a doctor and help people or to learn a new instrument, try to set goals, and keep them in mind even if you can’t work toward the goal yet.If it helps at all, I went through a hard time about a year ago for a few months and I felt like it was never going to end, but it ended and my life went back to normal. I never would have expected to be where I am today if you would have asked me last year.
