❝Your name sounds familiar, sir.❞ Dr. Darling muses out loud, the mixer being boring enough for him to ditch his side of the people and trying to chat up anyone else. A couple glasses in, he was particularly nosy enough to ask things he probably shouldn’t, merging into different circles of conversations unnoticed. Then it hits him– where he heard the name before. ❝Ah– I know. I’ve read your work!❞ He assumes, at least. He’s read many things. Objects Of Power require intense research and understanding of many topics. Damn, he’s even sung to them a couple times to make them calm down… It was, well, something.

Funny, that he’s not at his best at these gatherings while being so versed in the social; after all his doctorate is well earned. At least, Gillian himself thinks of it with some amusement. Talk here is easy to slip in and out of, anyway. He’s just on the rim of a conversation among colleagues when that small circle is interrupted and it warps itself to accommodate the man.

“You have?” He needn’t act so stunned—the one settled next to—nor shoot out the question, but when Gillian looks at him he’s obviously trying to place him. Climbing nearer to the top of academics, as elsewhere, the crowd thins out and everyone ends up knowing everyone in the field, usually. Losing track of names and faces isn’t something he wants at such a tender age, considering. Still, that surprise’s got nothing but an amiable quality to it, come critique or praise.

Yet he can’t place the guy, so, before pretending gets awkward, “I’m sorry, I haven’t caught your name all night.”

Jonathan carefully studied Gillian, he looked like a fish out of water, a feeling that he knew all too well.

Fish out of water, yeah... a man out of his own time; same thing. He can do the same reading, can do it well, with credentials to attest to it. Just not on himself. “Well, see, I’m looking for me.” There’s a slim, awkward smile on his lips—Gillian knows how that sounds.

A tiny robotic voice chimes in from way under his feet—sounding lively as ever, and like it’d been about to burst with that secret knowledge ever since rolling in—but it’s cut short. “Hey, not now, Metal.”

He looks back at Ingram. That’s right, he ought to explain about that answer. “I don’t mean like finding where I am.” Siberia hadn’t brought him the total clarity Gillian had wished for. “I lost my memory my whole life back. I was hoping a professional like you can help me out.”

“Just Gillian’s fine.” He sinks into the chair a little—just a bit, it’s not that comfortable. He's looking at the PI, around his office. Gillian’s hair is in its usual combed-but-mussed-up do, but he feels more on the dishevelled side.

Old L.A. is a long ways from Neo Kobe City even with how fast travel is these days. It’s that, and the ever resurfacing confusion amid recent clarity, that has him hung up on the small things.

“Ah, anyway, I saw your ad in one of the newspapers.” He explains. It’s not all nerves. ‘Cause, not to mention, he’s still struggling with a 50-year-bout of amnesia. Gillian rakes his fingers through tufts of brown at the back of his head. “I’m looking for someone.”
