Bonus chapters: Meeting Korra
“My Lord, you really should think more on our last discussion,” Zuko’s main advisor spoke gently. The memories of Ozai’s reactions to such suggestions made him flinch on instinct.
“I have. Is there someone you have in mind?” Zuko asked with genuine curiosity.
Ever since Mai decided that Zuko’s new responsibilities as fire lord- taking care of the nation and helping Aang in any way he could to bring balance back to the world- was too much for her to handle, he’d thrown himself into his work.
Zuko could still hear Mai’s words hit him like a tidal wave.
“You said this time would be different! That you would change!” She had yelled at the time.
“And I thought you weren’t just some gold digger, after me just because I became the fire lord. But, looks like I was wrong too!” He had lost his temper, yelling back with the force of months of loneliness. Mai was always either asleep or gone by the time he got back to his chambers at night.
“I have made contact with a prominent family in the Earth Kingdom, just outside of Ba Sing Se. They have agreed to a political alliance in exchange for an arranged marriage with their eldest daughter,”
“Is it a good fit?” He asked. If he was going to be in a political marriage, he wanted to at least not hate his wife with the same hate that Ozai had for his mother.
“She is very headstrong, according to her father, but she is wise beyond her years. We got a letter from Master Iroh as well discussing her suitability to you my lord,” The advisor spoke.
With the mention of his uncle, Zuko’s brows shot up in shock. Even though it really shouldn’t have. Especially since she is from the Earth Kingdom.
“What did my uncle exactly say?” Zuko asked gently and curiously. Nobody on this planet knew him better than his uncle. So he trusted no one more in picking out his future bride than him.
“Here, I have the scroll right here,” The advisor retrieved the scroll from his robes.
‘Zuko, I have met you new bride to be. I think she will bring the balance to your life that you’ve always wanted. She would give you a run for your money on the metric of stubbornness. But her stubbornness comes from a place of love and wanting to protect her loved ones. Please Zuko, look inward to open yourself up to love after Mai. I know you still hurt over her, but in order to be happy, you need to move on and forward. And I think Jasmine will help you with that process. Even if you start as friends. Remember Zuko, the longest lasting buildings have the strongest foundation,’
“Ready my ship to sail for Ba Sing Se in the morning. I’d like to visit my uncle and meet my new bride,” Zuko repeated his uncle’s words in his head as he got ready for bed.
By the time his head hit the pillow, he felt as if he was back on the lam with him, chasing the Avatar as the smell of jasmine tea pulled him to sleep. The last thing he heard before the lull of sleep pulled him under was his uncle’s voice.
She will bring balance to you Zuko.
