i didn’t read Paper Town but what i got from the trailer is that Cara gets some boy to do stupid/rude shit and vandalism and calls it living and he wants pussy so bad he chases her down when she runs away. i hate it

Okay hold up. I don’t know what the movies gonna do and if it’s gonna be true to the book but (Spoiler warning) *takes a deep breath* the first half of this book is just this dude straight up manic pixie dream girlling the SHIT out of Margo. This is the part the trailer showed - he thinks she’s a miracle, an amzing angelic being sent down FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF HAVING HIM LOVE HER. TO MAKE HUS LIFE BETTER. HE OBJECTIFIES THE SHIT OUT OF HER, DISPITE HER HAVING NO FUCKING INTEREST IN HIM. THEN SHE RUNS OFF. BAM. GONE. And he just ASSUMES THIS IS CUZ SHE WANT HIM TO FIND HER. IN HIS ENTITLED MIND SHE WANTS HIM TO HUNT HER DOWN. AND THIS IS ALL FROM HIS FUCK BOY ASS PERSPECTIVE, SO IT’S SHADED AS “ROMANTIC” SOMEHOW. I SWEAR I SPENT MOST OF THIS BOOK IN A DISSOCIATIVE EPISODE CUZ IF HIS FUCKED UP VEIW. ANYWAY. HE HUNT HER THE FUCK DOWN SOMEHOW THROUGH CLUES AND SHIT AND TAKE OFF ON GRAD NIGHT IN HIS MOM’S VAN WITH SOME FRIENDS (FOR REASONS???) AND FINDS HER. And you know what happens when he finds her? SHE TELLS HIM TO FUCK OFF. THAT RIGHT. THIS SHIT EATER REALISES IN THE SPAN OF A FEW PAGES THAT WAIT A SECOND, SHES A FUCKING HUNSN BEING WITH THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS AND HER OWN GODDAMN ISSUES AND NOT HIS FUCKING MIRACLE. THE BOOK FLIPSBTGE ENTIRE BUILD UP ON IT’S HEAD A D DESTROYS THE MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL NARRITIVE IN A WAVE OF FIREY, FEMINIST GLORY. I know John Green isn’t perfect but as someone who’s been pigeon holed as the “dream girl” his whole life, I gotta hope, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, that this movie does that same damn thing and the trailer is misleading on purpose.

yes. paper towns was literally written in response to the manic pixie dream girl trope and how harmful it is to woman. the moral of the story is literally, and i quote “what a treacherous thing, to believe a person is more than a person.” please don’t judge a book by its cover. the book was written as commentary (COMMENTARY, not vague satire) and the movie, while a little less blunt about it, still orchestrates it wonderfully.

YES FINALLY. I’m sick and fucking tired of people bashing on paper towns for being a prime example of manic pixie dream girl when THAT WAS THE POINT. john wanted it to seem that way, so he could crush it into a million pieces and shatter the whole frame of mind. Don’t fucking trash a book you don’t understand because you’ve clearly never read it.
