Yāknow, actually, I will concede that psych fields can be fixed without starting again, but on the condition of one thing happening.
ALL professionals in ALL psych related fields give up ALL power and authority, and that is given to the patients unconditionally. YOU be the ones whos lives depend on toeing the line and keeping on our good side.Ā
To further clarify and expand on this, by giving up all power and authority, I mean the following
You do not get to force treatment on anyone.
You do not get to coerce people into treatment.
You do not get to punish people for not agreeing to treatment.
You do not get to obstruct patients from accessing treatments you donāt agree with.
You eliminateĀ āuncooperativeā,Ā āresists treatmentā,Ā āmanipulative towards staffā and everything similar from your vocabulary.
You do not make a diagnosis that the patient doesnāt agree with.
If you and the patient disagree, learn to agree to disagree.Ā
Even better, swallow your damn pride and admit you are wrong.
You do not get to pathologize things you donāt like.
You do not get to turn a patient away because of their diagnosis.
You respect the right of the patient to lead a mad, and even self-destructive life if they donāt want your help.
Probably a whole bunch of other things too.
-Forced institutionalisation needs to go. It needs to go right fucking now.
-If the parent consents to treatment but the child does not, and the child is old enough to understand what said treatment is, donāt force treatment on the child.
-Psych professionals shouldnāt be determining whether trans ppl are allowed to transition (esp now that being trans is no longer considered a mental illness).
-Also like all medical fields, there needs to be more conscious discussions about medical/scientific racism, due to
1) it being a common thing for non neurodivergant black children being diagnosed with schizophrenia in order to further the school to prison pipeline
2) Mentally ill black people having little to no access to proper psychiatric treatment and high rate murder at the hands of the police as well as instutionalizing
- If your patient reports harmful side effects on the meds you prescribe, you have to believe them and look for alternatives.
- You donāt get to turn away patients because they refuse to take a certain type or brand of medication.
- Receiving money from a medication brand is not a valid reason to convince a patient to try that specific medication.
