My Internet is genuinely so ass rn it's almost like the universe wants to force me to write bc certainly nothing else is giving me dopamine in the moment
I got curious while listening to Headlock about what a headlock even is and somehow that word gave me clarity about what I want to do in the ending of my fanfiction. You sure get inspired by some weird things sometimes.
How come ao3 allows donations for itself, but not for anything else e.g stuff about Palestine?
because even as a non-profit organization, ao3 still needs money in order for it to function. a non-profit organization does need money in order for it to run and operate.
being a non-profit organization does not mean "we don't need money to run it yay". it does not mean "we pay everything out of our own pockets, so we don't need any donation" — that's not how it works.
as for palestine, the site doesn't "forbid things that are related to palestine only". it forbids "anything and everything that 1. is not fanwork 2. involves money" — which happens to include palestine-related stuff.
ao3 is a site for fanfiction (and original works, which according to them, counts as fanworks). the only things ao3 allows are fanfiction and original works — aka FANWORKS ONLY. NOTHING ELSE.
palestine-related posts are not fanworks, therefore they are not allowed.
political statement is not fanwork, therefore it is not allowed.
anything that is not fanwork (fanfiction or original work) is not allowed.
as for your question about donation — a non-profit organization can (and they do) ask for donation, because a non-profit organization cannot function without the donation money keeping it going.
"so why don't they allow users to earn money through their site too? why don't they allow users to raise money for palestine too?"
the answer is because:
be it the money you earn and keep for yourself or donation money meant for other organizations, to a non-profit organization like ao3, that is the same thing. it's still "users earning money through their site" or "users using their site to promote ways for other organizations (someone else) to earn money". intention or who gets the money doesn't actually matter here. anybody or any other organizations earning money through ao3 is NOT allowed.
"people donating to ao3 to keep the site going" and "fanfic writers monetizing works about other people's copyrighted characters" are NOT the same thing.
"people donating to ao3 to keep the site going" and "fanfic writers using ao3 to promote ways for other organizations to earn money" are NOT the same thing.
but "fanfic writers monetizing works about other people's copyrighted character" and "fanfic writers using ao3 to promote ways for other organizations to earn money" ARE the same thing.
"people donating to ao3 to keep the site going" is allowed because... without the donation money, ao3 would not have existed in the first place, it would not have existed today, it would not have been able to continue functioning.
"fanfic writers monetizing works about other people's copyrighted character" and/or "fanfic writers using ao3 to promote way for other organizations to earn money" are NOT allowed because fanfiction is already in a legally grey area. the only reason ao3 and fanfic writers are not being sued by companies like disney or netflix is because "no one is monetizing fanfiction, and ao3 is not used as a tool for users — or any other organizations — to earn money in any way, shape or form".
that's the only reason ao3 isn't being forced to shut down by companies like disney or netflix, the only reasons it's not being bombarded by lawsuits. "no money is involved because the characters belong to their respective studios". fanfic writers just have fun with them. but they are NOT being monetized. NOTHING that is posted on the site can be used to earn anybody — be it the writers or any other organizations — any money.
so no "please donate to xyz". no "commission is open". no "here's my patreon".
be it directly or indirectly, if it involves money, it's against ao3's terms of service.
"but what about original works? they are the writers' original characters. can we monetize our own original works on ao3 or can we promote ways for people to donate to xyz under our original works on ao3?"
no, you still cannot mention or even imply donation or commission on ao3, even if it's your own original works. why? because ao3 doesn't differentiate original works from fanfiction — since it's impossible for them to do that. now I know it's super easy to distinguish between fanfics and original works. but the real issue is that ao3 is KNOWN AS A SITE FOR FANFICTION. it allows original works, yes. but its main purpose is still fanfiction. it hosts millions of fanfiction about other people's copyrighted characters. so basically the entire site is "fanfiction site" — therefore, for legal reasons, anything that involves money cannot be allowed.
the measure ao3 takes to ensure nobody can sue them and force them to shut down is to forbid any mention or implication of money on their platform. it's like them telling companies like disney and netflix "hey, I'm cool here. no one monetizes anything on our site / our site isn't being used as a tool for anybody or organization to earn money." which is the main reason it's not being sued left and right by these companies.
their rules are very simple:
they're a non-profit organization. they're run by people's donation.
they do not allow any monetization or any mention/implication of money on their site, this is how they avoid lawsuits.
anything that isn't fanwork is not allowed on their site, as their site was made only for fanworks.
respectfully, ao3 is NOT a social media platform. it is an archive meant to host fanworks.
if you want to talk about palestine or any other issues that are important to you, you can absolutely do that on your own social media platforms. but a fanfiction site is NOT a place for social justice, human rights or real-world issues.
maybe I missed it in the post but I would also like to mention that Ao3 being non-profit means that all donation money only goes towards keeping the website up. The money cannot be used for any other purpose because that would imply they profit out of it. Ao3 allows donations for itself because they're needed to keep the website up, it doesn't allow donations towards 3rd parties because that would imply they make money through fanfictions. Maybe I just repeated what OP already stated in short form but I thought I should add on a bit.

If you write 3 sentences on your work in progress and show me, then I will write 4 sentences on my work in progress and show you!
It isn't the most exciting thing but I'd like to mention that I had to do at least 20 minute research to find out the date just to avoid plot holes in a future event of the story 💔 Honestly the most boring passage in the whole chapter but that's how it is at times. It's 4 sentences but who cares, more is better than less.
With a loud sigh, they turned onto their side, pulling out their phone from a pocket in the front of their pullover.
"I'll just have to do it tomorrow then," they muttered, unlocking their phone.
Monday the 23rd, way past 1 AM was what the clock showed to be the time. The wonderful lands of sleep and peace were calling them, but they were way too riled up to have an energizing rest, even when faced with the exhaustion one might feel after being tortured for hours.
Apparently writing your character being sleepy while you're sleepy will make you fall asleep as well.
You can always tell if a writer is American or not, prove me wrong.
to anyone who’s ever contributed to widespread bullying that is causing fanfic authors to delete their fics and their account I literally hope you get divebombed by bird shit every time you leave the house and every day it ruins your whole hairdo and outfit and also your whole life and everyone sees you for the weirdo monster you are it’s literally so serious 😭😭😭😭
There's this weird phenomenon where all my Original Characters have a mental breakdown somewhere in the first 5 chapters without me originally intending them to do so.

Okay but all of us (fanfiction) writers have that one character we're scared of writing, right? Like, it's not even anything bad, it just genuinely scares you when you have to write them because of how deranged they are and how hard it is for you to connect to them.
Procrastinating so bad I've made a mood board instead of actually writing
This only fits the vibe of the character in a very specific time of the plot so ehhh. Nobody cares but the mood board is about a Original Character I made for a JJK fanfiction I'm currently writing.
I only made a mood board once in my life before which was for school (and about Gyaru, History gave me some creative freedom for once) so I'm aware it isn't good.
The writing advice industrial complex will tell you to write every single day and if you miss a day you've failed and your habit is broken and you might as well quit. This is insane. Some days you live instead of writing and then you have something to write about. some days you stare at the wall and that is also research. some days you're just tired. The work will be there tomorrow. You are not a content machine. stop treating yourself like one.
things I won’t let ai take away from human writers
em dash
“not x, not y, but z”
short sentence stacking as a stylistic choice
none of these belong to ai. these are all what human writers have been writing since day one, way before ai was invented. ai was trained to mimic how human writers write — so em dash, not x not y but z and short sentence stacking would never have been used by ai at all if ai hadn’t learned and mimicked them from human writers.
no, you are not “fighting against ai” by accusing every work that has em dash, not x not y but z or short sentence stacking in it as ai-generated, you are helping ai harm the writing community by engaging in witch hunt and scaring human writers away from creating/sharing their works for fear of being wrongly accused of using ai.
speculations, accusations and ai witch hunt harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.
For some reason people believe that writing every day means HAVING TO write at least 5 sentences or something, but if you only write one sentence, if you read over something again and change it slightly that's still writing. Writing every day doesn't require you to always be super inspired, it just requires you to write, no matter how much it is.

Being a writer means wanting to write and read something for inspiration but still having work to do and then not doing any of the three and just go play some video games.
About writing the after effects and signs of Panic Attacks (atleast in my experience)
I do only remember having two, or at least since I stopped trying to act like they were something else.
Everyone has a different experience with the aftermath of them, but I feel in most stories I've read it's almost like the panic attack stops and everything is fine again, and in my experiences it isn't.
Perhaps I also simply notice more things about it, considering that I use sensory to ground myself, but that isn't the point.
I don't want to rant on about useless background information so here are:
A few things I personally think should be talked about more regarding the aftermath or beforehand of having a Panic Attack
Sweat. Something I almost imideatly notice when I snap out of my panic attacks is the uncomfortable feeling of sweat making my clothes practically cling to my body. I don't notice while I'm having the panic attack, considering that obviously I'm not down to earth, however after I will feel like a wet fish on land.
Speaking. Most of the time I've seen so many people write the characters to immediately be able to talk properly again, which in my experience isn't like that. It's most likely a well-known fact that during a panic attack you literally can't speak, even if you tried to force yourself to do so you just for some reason can't, outside for maybe a few muttered words and shaky whispers, and just because a panic attack ends doesn't mean it's immediately fine again. My voice tends to tremble and I can't speak loudly without having to stop mid sentence, it gradually gets better but for me it atleast takes 10 minutes to fully regain my voice.
This is just a personal thing, but I tend to hyperfocus on little details over and over again trying to avoid getting lost in my mind. Panic attacks are scary, you don't want them to happen, which is why you'll most likely over concentrate on grounding, from my own experience it helps little and can be even more stressing. I especially find myself doing this while on the verge of having a panic attack.
Heartbeat. Perhaps this one is very obvious but your heart is RACING. It isn't something people miss, but I wish people would describe the feeling of dread at hearing your heart fasten more and more as you know "I know it's going to happen" more (Ew I used more way to much here) After a panic attack your heart will slowly fade back to being normal, but it doesn't immediately happen.
Triggers. Panic attacks don't always get triggered by big things. Of course this solely depends on the character in the end, but I've had panic attacks over minor things such as backhanded comments about sensitive topics. It was fine, it hurt and then your thoughts start rolling out of control. Oh, you can already feel how it's going to happen, but you're to scared to say anything, because the reason is so minuscule why should it matter? This more a thing about panic attacks that happen due to escalating intrusive thoughts more than anything but most of the time you will try to dismiss the issue, you will feel horrible about everything you do and you know you need help (if this happened before) but you're scared that it was just overreacting.
Of course I'm not a medical professional, and this is more about my own experiences, this is not a rule to writing characters with panic attacks, it's just some personal things that I've experienced that barely get represented or talked about.
Almost no one will experience panic attacks like I do and for the reason I do, because we aren't the same person. Heck, my panic attacks always have differences. Sometimes I might have a lot of messy not even full breaths that you barely hear and other times I will try taking deep breaths that will just choke out due to sobs and are ugly loud.
Feel free to correct me on anything that seems invalidating or wrong
