Happy Halloween!Ā
TBT to last yearās Halloween Hike across the Seven Sisters. We had a great time, and a dragon on our hike! Ā How do you spend your Saturday mornings?Ā
TBT to the last Archsing (my last one, and the last one before the library renovations!) Smith has so many a capella groups to choose from, I donāt sing but its always nice to listen!Ā
Mountain Day was last Wednesday! Mountain day is a Smith holiday when our President, Kathy, calls off classes and every goes and enjoys the beautiful New England Fall. Naturally, this means apple picking, sometimes hiking, definitely photos. How did you spend Mountain Day?Ā
Our house didnāt get a van this year, but we managed in (very full) cars! This one only had two doors - and five was a squeeze - but we made it home! Thanks to all of our drivers!Ā

At the Tuesday Farmers Market in downtown Northampton, I decided to try Cucamelons! They are little grape sized fruits that taste like sour cucumbers. They were delicious and SO cute! After the market, I met a friend for bubble tea at Limered (assam, no milk, extra boba, half the sweetener is my favorite)! Yum.
I canāt believe that its almost fall break already! Iāve had a bit of a posting hiatus, but Iām happy to be back!Ā Ā Last Week was Sib Week in Northrop House! These are just a few remnants of the week, have you had sib week yet? What did you sibs do for you?Ā
TBT to Ziplining with the Smith Outing Club! Look for us at the club fair tomorrow!Ā
Reunion is fantastic! I have worked reunion twice, both times were a fast paced, exciting, and money making start to the summer. Listening to stories about Smith from the past make it all even better - Smith Alums are incredible!Ā

This weekās college essentials list is brought to you by Nina SajankilaĀ ā19 (pictured on the right wearing yellow flower crown)!Ā
Top Five Essentials: Ā
1. A cushion for your chair - My mom bought me a cushion before coming to Smith, which I didn't Ā think was necessary but after arriving, I found the chairs in our rooms really hard and uncomfortable. The cushion just adds comfort and makes working at your desk even better.
2. Good lighting - I'm very picky about the lighting in my room. When it's too dark in the room for sunlight to be effective, the lights were not very bright and depending on where my desk was, the light would cast a shadow on my paper. I think having a lamp, even just a desk lamp is really useful.
3. A fan - It get's really hot, especially on the top floors.
4. Enough warm layers - I get cold really easily so I brought leggings to wear under my jeans, which were really comfortable and kept me warm.Ā
5. Boots - rain and snow so you can get to class and keep your feet warm and dry. Ā

Rally Day is a day in February when seniors wear their gowns and funny hats and go to JMG where everyone who attends hears about who will be speaking at commencement! Usually, classes are canceled part of the day too! Since I was a first semester senior last semester - I got to participate! This year, our commencement speaker was Megan Smith - the US Chief Technology Officer to President Obama! Check out her speech!Ā

Tips this week from Ana PorroĀ ā19!Ā
--------
My first tip is that you do not need as much as you think you need. It is not necessary to move all of the things that you have in your room at home into your room at school.Ā
Clothing: With clothes only bring the items that you KNOW you are going to wear/aka the ones you wear a lot now. I honestly did not use three of the drawers of my dresser on a regular basis because I brought clothes that I didn't want to wear! I wear athletic clothes every day at home and I do the same at school. Same goes for my closet, too many dresses and coats that I did not ever wear. Shoes: Shoes are also important to limit as well. If you actively work out I say bring two pairs of sneakers but really limit dressy shoes and more rarely worn shoes as well. Extra Furniture:I think it was very helpful for me to have under bed storage and the bins to help organize all of the random stuff. However, I brought many things that I did not need that ended up in the bins. I didn't use my hairdryer more than to dry wet yoga pants and I broke open my gigantic makeup bag less than 10 times throughout the whole year. Only bring what you really think you need and know that you will use. Extras:Ā
BRING A BOXFAN TO PUT IN THE WINDOW!!! I cannot stress enough how much this helped me. I waited for two weeks first semester in the sweltering heat for this and it made such a huge difference for me and I was able to use this very often. It is absolutely worth the price for a dependable one. An extension cord. Several phone chargers are important bc things get misplaced. Headphones are a must and if you can afford nice ones/noise cancelling I highly recommend. Also if you are a restless sleeper try bringing a noise machine--my mom got me one for Christmas and it really made a difference with background noise. A few plastic plates and some silverware for food/ leftovers and with this some dish detergent to wash these items in the sink! I also recommend some glasses or water bottles. I think 2 water bottles is the magic number. One for the gym and one for everything else. Don't bring large Nalgene bottles or big hydro flasks--learned this the hard way. They don't fit under any of the water or ice spouts in the soda machines which render them mostly unusable. An over the door rack for towels/jackets for extra space. Foam roller or hand roller if you do sports or work out very often. Lots and lots of command hooks for posters/ calendars/ keys. Only bring a few mementos of home-some pictures worked for me esp if you get Ā homesick easily. Can't wait to see you soon! A
Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?
Ask the Guerrilla Girls, who visited Smith this past semester and whose research suggests that āless than 5% of the Modern Artist sections are women but 85% of the nudes are femaleā

This Month, Iāll be featuring tips (and methods and styles) from Smithies about packing for college! This weekās guest contributor, Sarah Foster ā19, came all the way from Montana with everything she needed! Check out her system...
5 Rules for Packing
1. Don't get attached to little things...you will collect so many things throughout your four years at Smith that you will end up having to throw out most of it anyways.
2. Try to only bring the necessities such as clothing, shoes, bedding...especially if you are traveling by plane! ( Don't worry we have Target close by, so you can get anything and everything you need when you get to Smith)
3. Roll clothing so that everything packs tightly together...trust me you will have so much more space to add more clothes "You just can't leave behind!"
4. Dedicate one smaller bag to shoes and toiletries and the bigger bag to clothing.
5. Most importantly DON'T be afraid to leave things behind because like I said earlier you collect things once you get to college, such as... a lot of memorabilia!
Just remember all 5 of these things are possible, I brought everything I needed in just 3 bags!!!
Happy Packing Smithies!
This week, Friday meant sāmores time! It was rainy out, so instead of roasting our marshmallows outside we made them with the broiler in Park house. They turned out to be toasted and delicious! Moral of the story: Inside Sāmores can be fun, too!Ā

Dreaming of cooler weather --- and maybe some winter sports.
Classes start in about a month, which means that in just a few weeks Iāll be reunited with my little sib! The HONS (Head of New Students) matched us (and all of the other pairs) up last fall, and then I spent a week planning and delivering little gifts and signs to Natalie - my little - in the night, so that they would be there when she left (or sometimes when she returned) from Crew practice in the morning. It was such a fun week - that ended on Friday with a reveal (she missed it, but we met up later)! Sib week is fun as a little (I had wonderful big sibs my first year at Smith) but I think it is even more fun as an upperclass student because you get to plan and be a little sneaky to keep your identity a surprise... you also bond with the other big sibs. In my house, we worked together to confuse everyone, stayed up late making signs and wall decorations for our littles, etc.Ā
Having a Smith Sib - whether in your house on on a team or org is really fun and a great way of getting to know (and sometimes mentor) Smithies from different years. If you donāt click with your big, donāt worry, you are sure to find many unofficial big sibs while at Smith - just put yourself out there!Ā
