The “Ulterior Motives” thing Ps me O (pmo) so much. People are so fucking convinced that it was on the radio or an actual part of their childhood when it absolutely wasn’t.
The song was literally never released. The only reason you would have heard it is if you were straight up watching porn from the 80s. That’s it. End of sentence, end of discussion.
I PROMISE you that you didn’t hear the song exclusively released on porn on the radio when you were a kid or in any other media that would have been significant to you. It literally could have never happened.
I am 99.9…% sure that people were just getting the songs “Promises, Promises” by Naked Eyes and “Material Girl” by Madonna, both incredibly popular and successful singles from the 80s, mixed together. If you’ve never listened to Promises, Promises, the songs sound very similar and one actually charted.
You might be thinking now: “Slug, why does this matter? People just find lost media charming.” And the answer to that question is it matters because I am tired of people pretending like this song was some lost 80s pop hit that were unearthing like archaeologists. It’s really cool that we found a solid new wave track that would have been completely lost to time, but it comes with a complete misunderstanding of what culture was like in the 80s. It wasn’t some ancient and unknowable era, we have a record of what pop songs were on the radio guys. This one was literally never on the radio.
