A repost from way back: This one takes us all the way back to the beginning, when Jonathan Richman was a young, Velvet Underground-loving guy just getting his act together. It kicks off with his earliest demos and includes subsequent demo recordings with the Original Modern Lovers — bassist Ernie Brooks, keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads) and drummer David Robinson (later of The Cars). There are some familiar tracks (check the early version of “Roadrunner,” with a blast of Velvet-y guitar not heard on the released take), as well as a few that never made it past the demo stage. The highlight for me is the handful of songs recorded in 1972 at the infamous Mercer Center for the Arts on New Year’s Eve in NYC, where the band (minus Harrison and augmented by a second guitarist) kick out some serious jams. Jonathan may never have rocked harder than here. If there’s a tape of this entire set, I’d love to hear it — also on the bill that night: the New York Dolls and Suicide. Safe to say that if you were there, you’ve got eternal bragging rights! Interesting that the Original Modern Lovers are one of the few proto-punk bands that haven’t reunited in the 21st century, except for random one-offs. Obviously, Richman has gone in a different direction since those days, but in a world where the Stooges, Rocket From The Tombs and many others have reformed, anything’s possible, right? Hey, I’d buy a ticket.
