SLIGHTLY STOOPED

My eyes were burning and tears were streaming down my face from exhaustion. After keeping myself awake for hours, I needed to turn off the TV where trump was leading the polls and just hope that the following morning, I would be celebrating our first female president. That did not happen. Instead, I woke up at 4 A.M. and ferociously googled ‘who is the president of the US?’ and was greeted with a blown up picture of Trump.

I’m so angry that he won. But I’m even more angry at the people who allowed this to happen. The people who excitedly parade down the streets and feel invincible. Trump supporters were terrible before yesterday, and now they’re even worse. If their president can grab a woman by the pussy and get away with it, why can’t they? If the president-elect can be a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, bigoted, animal, then what do his supporters have to lose by acting the same way? The answer is- nothing. 

Before the polls closed, it was surreal to see Twitter so active while Instagram was radio silent. On the platform where voice surpasses photo, I was able to partake in a conversation with a community that has continually shown support for women, for those who identify as LGBTQ, for POC, for muslims, and for latinos. We did not to be physically together to share our anxiety and horror.

Like most of you, I spent yesterday being devastated, let down, disappointed, worried, and angry. I’m scared for my friends and their friends, and their friends. I’m scared for all of the people who will continue to be negatively affected by this election. But in this time of uneasiness, I had never felt more connected. We are in this together, and I’m with you. The future is uncertain, but Trump’s presidency provides a real chance for our generation to fight for a critical system that unites us beyond skin color and gender, beyond sexual orientation and class.

To all the Trump supporters who found their way to my blog, I will not congratulate you, but I also won’t stop you from reveling in your victory. Conversely, you will not call me rude for not congratulating you or suggesting that Republicans felt the same level of threat when Obama was elected. You have your president, and the “corrupt establishment” you cry about did exactly what it was put in place for – allowing a non-politician to run and win the presidency. You have that, and I have my thoughts and feelings which I will post whether you like it or not. You have elected a weak man and we won’t let you forget that.
