More plotting discussions have inspired me to write more things about Cynder's people.
So, I know I lead heavily with trigger warnings re: Cynder's misogynistic takes -- those are absolutely true, and there is harm in his perspective, but I do want to reiterate that Valkin is not a society of terrible people. What it comes down to is:
Valkin believes that a woman is the heart of her home and community. Women are healers, storytellers, caregivers. They bring life into the world in the way men cannot. Therefore, they must be protected.
Valkin also believes that a man should be the cliche strong and brave and not show any weakness, etc. And that a man should only be vulnerable with his wife.
Now how it warps into something toxic is:
Women that resist a "softer" role described above are putting the tribe at risk by not protecting it culture and its future. If all the women are dying on the battlefield, the tribe does not survive. If the women are not sharing our stories, the tribe does not survive.
Men with wives that are "too independent" are emasculated and fail their protector role.
AND -- While it is sweet that the wife only sees her husband's vulnerable side, that means he is pouring ALL of his emotions (good and bad) onto her, meaning she has to hold that for him and is likely his only confidant. That is a lot of emotional labor/burden for one person!
That desperate need for women in the tribe is what leads to the bride raids. It's not "men horny want fuck" it is viewed as an actual survival strategy for their people. They only take women when there is a lack of eligible brides. Valkinians are expected to marry as soon as possible, although it isn't entirely enforced (except for Cynder, who needs multiple heirs ASAP).
Additionally:
Women who do not adhere to the societal norms are given a choice: leave and never return (because you're not useful to our people) or to become a communal bedwarmer. As a bedwarmer, you cannot choose who you service, but your needs are met: you get birth control (in the form of herbal magic bullshit tea), a designated bed in a longhouse, and you can participate in the communal dinners, festivals, etc.
If you're a very resistant raided bride, but don't do enough to get yourself killed, you end up in this role, too. Bedwarmers are viewed with a bit of contempt (primarily by the older women), but they are not outwardly mistreated, and a man can choose to marry a bedwarmer and take her out of that role.
Now, are there individuals that interpret the rules in a way that gives them more power to abuse? Absolutely. There is still a lot of room for dubious consent, abuse, and an unfair treatment of women in this society. But that is not the intention, nor the core values, of the Valkin people.
Like any society that is used to weathering dangerous conditions regularly, conforming to the rules equals survival. Outliers are a risk. Outsiders need to be immediately subjugated or killed or sent away.
Yuffie wished she didn't wear her heart on her sleeve. She didn't know how she had managed to last as long as she did at Shrike considering her fragility. But, she had a few friends that she kept close, and everyone else she was good at playing innocent and like she was best buds with everyone.
"Don't let it get to your head though." She said, nudging him gently. She cared about Florian a lot, but she knew who he was, and what he was doing, and still tried to be as careful as she possibly could around him β even if he was a good lay.
"Me? Never." He stepped back. "Now run downstairs and get yourself a room here. I'll write to Shrike. With any luck, they'll approve of our plan. If not...well. You're shit outta luck."
He was pretty confident, though.
Yuffie stood in front of him, and carefully edged forward, before very very gently wrapping her arms around him in an attempts to hug him without causing him pain.
"Yes sir. I'm sorry, Florian. i just... sometimes I still don't know how to navigate my feelings in all of this, despite doing this for so long. And I hate that you're the one who puts up with it. I hate that I care so much." She blurted, before pulling away and looking at him.
"You were the only one who gave me the time of day without trying to use me in some horrific way. I owe my life to you." Her voice was gentle, and her eyes looked at him with a softened gaze. She had so much to be thankful for, despite the horrors that awaited while working for such a corrupt group of people.
"Fair. I will do as you say. I promise."
Did she really owe her life to him? Perhaps. He had saved Yuffie a few times back when he was training her. But he had done that for all the recruits. It was his role.
She was a sweet girl. Too sweet for this line of work. But her devoted adoration of him truly baffled him. Was it because he had slept with her twice? Maybe. But he had slept with at least half of those under Shrike's employ. Including two of the higher ups themselves.
Still -- if encouraging her adoration kept them both safe, then he would do so.
"Thank you, Treasure. You know I'm only looking out for you, like always."

Yuffie walked back to the bed and laid down, burying her face in a pillow for a minute so that she could take the time to breathe and not fuck up her words again.
"Florian. I didn't mean that. I'm sorry." She said, reaching out to him to offer her hand.
"They know I'm in this area. They don't know where, or with who. I wouldn't compromise your safety."
Florian looked at her hand for a moment before accepting it, and pulling her to stand.
"They know where I am. If anyone's safety could be compromised, it's yours. But as I said -- I can get you to be assigned to work with me permanently. It isn't safety, but it's better than what you have been doing."
"But you need to do as I tell you from now on, Treasure. No attempting to do things your way, no changing your mind and running off, no thinking you know better -- if you're my partner in this, you're my partner. Fair?"
Muse Power Ranking
So since this multimuse is based around the concept of interacting with "side characters" of a standard fantasy story, I try not to make too many of them end-all be-all powerful. They definitely have their skills, but most of them are nerfed in someway -- for example, Florian being a great rogue but he has a permanent injury debuff.
However, I'll rank under the cut who's the strongest to weakest.
It felt like a rarity that Florian ever called her by her name, it was always by her nickname that she adored. It made her feel special, and like she meant something to him.
"I'm sorry, I just.." Yuffie had already been someone who was too emotional. It had landed her in trouble more than once. She looked at him, but didn't meet his gaze. She hated the idea that she was a burden to him. The woman had tried to be independent throughout her life, which is exactly why she went into thievery. Then she met Florian.
"I don't need your handouts. I'll be okay." She whispered, still not allowing herself to meet his gaze. She felt like a burden to him.
"...Handouts? I'm offering you the best I can, girl," Florian shook his head. Then he shrugged.
"Fine. If that's what you want to do, then I won't stop you. Nor will I tell Shrike your plan. But if you came here without telling anyone, I suspect you'll have been followed. Or will be soon. It'll be better for you to head back to the capital before they notice you slipped away."

"This is going to ruin the tour."
"Would three days do?" Joscelin asked, that way he would know when to teleport back.
"The teleportation does not have any risks for you or your daughter."
Neither were creatures of Darkness which the holy light would harm. Humans normally were beings of light.
Joscelin stood, stretching somewhat. Although he had not known Gareth was a father, at least the warrior had not said no outright. Which Joscelin would have understood if he had.
"That'll be plenty of time, yeah," Gareth stood, too, prepared to show the Sovereign and his entourage out. "We'll be ready to travel in three days."
Presuming River didn't hate him and run away overnight or something.
"Thank you again for your patience and the offer overall."
Yuffie felt embarrassed that she had even asked him such a foolish question. She sighed heavily and stood up.
"Forget I said anything." She muttered, getting ready to leave. She was humiliated by the fact that she had even suggested they try to escape. After all, she didn't really realise that he was still working for Shrike. She thought he'd managed to get out, somehow.
With her back turned to him, she wiped the tears from her face, looking up at the ceiling to blink back any more that threatened to fall. "Fuck." She whispered under her breath, before walking toward the door.
Florian looked up.
"What? Come on, don't be like that," he frowned after her. "Treasure -- Yuffie." He stood and caught up to stop her. "Stop."
"I can't help you leave Shrike. But I can help make it more bearable." Geez, this girl. "You found me all the way out here. Seeing as how I up and left without a trace, that's proof of your skill."
With a sigh, he tilted his head back and considered what to do next.
"I could do for some help out here. I'm usually tied to one spot per town for sake of gathering information. You'd be a solid errand girl -- and a trusted messenger besides. I'll tell them I invited you to me for a quick fuck and came up with the idea to keep you close. They'll approve of it, probably."
Yuffie took the tea from her. At least the cup was warm. She cradled it in her hands for a minute before deeply sighing. She tried to turn off her brain so that she didn't taste the tea going down. In three large gulps, the tea was gone. She held the cup back out to the woman.
"If it's between life or death, I choose life." She said, looking at the woman.
"Where am I needed?"
The woman raised her eyebrows at her. Then she shook her head, accepting the cup back.
"The Prince will escort you back to your tent. You'll be sent to service the soldiers after dinner."
She gestured towards the door.
"Go. Rest while you can."
--
When the new bedwarmer emerged, Cynder grunted in acknowledgment.
"Right. Back where you came from," he gestured for her to walk ahead of him. "Go on."
Yuffie tried her hardest to fight back the tears brimming in her eyes. Something about him confirming that they would kill her made a loud sob escape her lips, and she looked away with shame. She tried her hardest not to show weakness in front of Florian. She didn't want to seem like someone who still harbored such strong emotions despite the work she was in and who she was working for.
"Take me with you." She said, her voice cracking. Her hand touched his briefly, before pulling back. She was hesitant to ask him for help, especially now that he was injured. They had lost contact for so long, did she even have the right to ask him for anything any more?
"With me? With me where?" Florian frowned, looking down at her. "I'm still working for Shrike, Treasure. Just at a more distant capacity. I've already accepted I'm not escaping this life. I figured that out a decade ago."
He leaned back, looking up at the ceiling.
"I put in my time. I've been with them for as long as I can I remember. I've trained plenty of of scouts and pickpockets, just as I trained you. And I was willing to do anything they asked of me. Even then, all they did was lengthen the leash, not cut it."
"Even discussing the possibility of you leaving could get us both killed. I can't help you, Yuffie. But I'll accept if you up and vanish one day. Hell, I'd prefer that. It'd mean you found a way to live your life."

He won't have more than like 5 icons because I'm picky. But! Mournvir Arabani has been added. And this should be the last muse I add for awhile, save for any swaps.
"Elias." His name was known in the village, so it wasn't anything to hide. Anyway, from their short interaction, Aidan seemed kind and thoughtful and not the type to take advantage of Elias' gift.
He rose with the man, the empty glass still in hand as he walked him to the gate. "I look forward to your next visit." Most of his clientele were usually women who had lost husbands or sons, and any men that came by were usually older seeking to speak to a wife who passed from illness. Aidan was the first man in a while who appeared to be around his age.
Handsome, too.
Not that I'm looking!
He was.
He cleared his throat, felt the judgmental gaze of his cat in the window behind him (it's like he knew exactly what he'd been thinking...), and smiled warmly. "Until we meet again, Aidan." He tugged the gate closed after the man had stepped out, a gentle breeze blowing through his hair and the flowers nearby.
"Until then."
Aidan departed promptly, feeling a bit uncertain as he did. Surely, Elias was not committing any atrocities against her Radiant Light. Surely not. He detected no malice from him, so maybe the man was truly deluded into believing he could contact the dead...?
Shaking his head, the holy knight focused on his goal. He'd head back home and return soon to get the answers he sought. He'd just have to be satisfied with that.
--
Aidan's trip home was about what he expected. His parents were pleased to see him, no matter how briefly. He did not let them know his reasons for returning home, however. He did not believe his mother would appreciate him fetching a possession of his grandmother's to tempt a potential heretic.
Within a few days, he was back in the village, and making his way back towards Elias' home. Hopefully, he would be available.
