She opens the door and sits down. Her words tell me that she's sorry, that she'll do anything to prove that she loves me, but her hands beg me to forget it ever happened in the first place. Tell me, when did we as a human race forget how to love? No, I don’t mean buying your significant other a Hallmark card written by a self-loathing middle-aged man in an office in Oklahoma for Valentine's Day, or changing your relationship status on Facebook. Because now it seems to be just that. Nowadays, I see girls going to parties to find a prince, but getting so drunk in the process that they forgot how to distinguish princes from frogs. And I see men acting like frogs, hopping from girl to girl until they find one inebriated enough to be...hesitantly obliging. I see 19 year old girls putting their Venmo details as their Tinder "About Me," like a pay-per-view fight, and everyone is willing to pay. And I, too, see people drinking in sex like bottles of [bourbon] to numb their heartbreak, just to come up hungover when it’s done. But worst of all, I see girls telling boys that they love them after being together for two or three weeks, and boys immediately saying that they love them back for fear of the alternative. What happened to love? To honesty, selflessness, and teamwork? To passion, to sex without regret, to lazy Sunday mornings, to cooking and eating together, to spontaneous adventures, to road trips, to getting lost in someone else's soul? There is nothing wrong with wanting to not take life so seriously and to want to just have fun, but since when did the game of "who cares less" come before the game of "who do I care for?"
