His sisters Maria and Varvara both lived with their father and studied in St. Petersburg for a time. The youngest Varvara died in 1925 in Moscow of typhus. Maria, originally called Matryona, born in 1898, was the one who attempted to organize a plot to rescue the now Imperial family, however her efforts were in vain. She eventually left Russia, dying in California in 1977. Of her father she would tell her children that he “taught her to be generous, even in times when she was in need herself. He said she should never leave home with empty pockets, but should always have something to give to the poor. … [he was] a simple man with a big heart and strong spiritual power, who loved Russia, God, and the Tsar,“
