The characters in the dub bear very little resemblance to the original version, which is what upsets me the most. They're all awful stereotypes of themselves... and the Iwatobi guys don't seem to even like or care about Rin much. That, and the foreshadowing to Haruka choosing to go pro was completely erased and turned into a joke.

Ahhhhhh, I see, I see!

I feel like the reason people might think this is they don’t speak Japanese, because the dub is actually very true to how boyish the original word choices are. They sound very school-boyish in the original. It’s hard to describe (and maybe hard to get across in the subs?), because Japanese has a lot of words that carry a lot of tone or social implications but only translate into English as, for example, “you”. But there’s a massive difference between anata, omae, anta, kimi, teme, etc., but since they lack English equivalents, they all get translated into the sub as “you”. So you might be disappointed when the sub said “you” and the dub suddenly said “dude”, but what people might not know is that the original Japanese was “omae”, which holds a familiarity, closeness, and masculine tone that “you” just doesn’t get across. The word “you” was by no means the only instance of this, but it’s the easiest to explain.

So I think the confusion might be (or rather the disparity between why I loved the dub and why most people hated the dub) is that I was listening to their highly colloquial, very school-boy speech in Japanese, so I was thrilled when the dub had very colloquial, school-boy speech as well. I was really impressed at how they handled it because Free! did a great job in Japanese of using very natural high schooler language, and the dub did the same (at least by California standards, maybe it was jarring for people who live in places where they don’t say dude and bro as much?). But I can see why people reading the sub (which was very literal and didn’t really take the nuances into account) might be shocked.

I only watched the first ep of the dub so far (that’s all that I could find posted) so I’ll have to watch the rest before I can gauge how they treated the other stuff, but as far as being caricatures of themselves, I think this^ is what happened.

Kusanagi-sensei mentions she hopes we all enjoy it, and in a second tweet she’s reviled the cast, which I’m pretty sure is the same as the anime’s cast. She ends by commenting that “Shin-ah talks a lot in this saga (lol)”. Well. All I’m thinking about is I can’t @#£%& to hear everybody calling Yun “mum” and him chucking rice balls left and right. HELL YES!!!!!
