“in fanfiction where you know a lot of people who have gone through the same things you are writing about will be reading, you have a moral obligation to write things thoughtfully and with care” i don’t think i have a moral obligation to do that actually. i think i have a moral obligation to write the story in my heart no matter how distasteful or nasty or thoughtlessly it comes across. i think that the #victim status of my audience has no fucking bearing on my moral obligation to do anything. and i think your assertion that you can somehow tell when the author is “writing things for shock value” is crazy and your moral posturing over incest rpf is beyond the pale
to get triggered by fanfiction is fine. to get triggered by certain depictions of topics close to home is fine. but that's not the writer's fault. even if they didn't tag it. even if they didn't content warn. there is no "fault" there. you ran into something that triggered you and that has literally nothing to do with the writer who made it. it's your responsibility to deal with your own reaction to art that upsets you! it is not the writer's responsibility to make sure you don't see it or that they write it in a way that doesn't trigger you! your feelings are not morally relevant!
