im not a superbig fan of the big season bad guys just being three nerdy men. feels kinda uncreative and non-threatening (yes they’re smart and all that but they quote star wars all the time and kick zero ass) especially considering s5 having this big dawn glory/ben plotline

imo major downgrade from the rest of the shows bad guys, but it seems like they’re focusing on a lot more than just defeating a big evil this season so i can get behind it.

not saying i dislike this season as a whole btw, just kinda bummed the villains aren’t as interesting as they’ve been before

The other layer here is also that the trio are a metaphor for misogyny.

overtly violent misogyny, and the misogyny of silence in the service of fitting in. Even clumsy and ridiculous misogyny still causes harm to women.

Theres a lot of gaslighting related stories in this season with the trio, as well as trying to have power and control over women. They suck cause theyre meant to. But i agree that they can feel like a lame season villain in terms of "monsters". Theyre also probably the truest to life evil that women have to deal with in the real world.

One thing I love about spuffy is spikes ability to be able to be the dark thing in her life when she needed it like looking back at the show I never really thought about it how the relationship was quote unquote dark or how buffy was in a dark place but it seems to me it's like what she needed and Spike was the only person who was willing to give her what she actually needed or what she wanted because Buffy's friends canon ignored her trauma and season 6 and her being brought back from the dead and stuff, what really showed me this is season 6 episode 13 dead things he gave her what she needed at the time is was way to vent out her frustration and her anger in a way that wasn't harming herself

I personally feel like Spike and Buffy's relationship could have been more sweet and domestic and ignore the hardest parts of both of there life's but the beautiful thing about spuffy is that it was everything there relationship wasn't just like a picture perfect relationship with wrong ideas like all her previous ones

Im a real dream nerd and i adore the symbolism you could read into Smashed.

When Buffy and Spike are fighting and break into that house. In dreams the house often represents the self.

Is the house run down? Oh yeah.

Is the house empty, on the verge of collapse? Yep.

Buffy is the same. She's come back from the dead and feels like a shell of a her former self. She's one push away from collapse.

This intimate exchange with Spike literally demolishing the house really is a wonderful metaphor for tearing down the identity of her past.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" wouldn't do this. But Buffy Summers might. For the rest of the series we see her rebuilding her identity, her place within community, her incorporating the darkness into her life without it consuming her and no longer needing to be the only strong one.

Spike as a catalyst is an incredible character.
