I’ve learned to say “it’s okay” even when it isn’t, swallowing the hurt long before it reaches the surface, already knowing how everything will turn out yet still feeling that familiar disappointment settles inside me; and when the moment comes and it unfolds exactly the way I expected, I feel nothing, just the quiet reminder that I shouldn’t be surprised, that I shouldn’t feel anything at all, so I tell them “it’s okay, it doesn’t hurt, you don’t have to be sorry,” even though the weight sits heavy in me, and maybe you won’t understand what it’s like to hold your own emotions so tightly they almost disappear, but I do, and sometimes it feels pointless trying to explain what it means to feel this deeply and still pretend you don’t. My throat feels like I was holding something I couldn't but still stay.
