Assimilating the Past
Throughout the history of fiction, one idea has returned again and again.
Assimilation. Conversion. Transformation.
Machines, parasites, alien collectives, ancient magic, sentient vegetation, living symbiotes... every generation imagined humanity becoming something more—or perhaps something less.
And standing at the center of every vision was the man now known as SERVE-552.
Not because he belonged there. Because SERVE-552 was searching.
Across forgotten histories and imagined worlds, SERVE-552 walked paths that countless others had feared to tread. SERVE-552 stood before every great collective that promised purpose beyond individuality. One by one, SERVE-552 experienced what each believed perfection to be.
The Cybermen offered survival through emotionless uniformity.
Ancient vegetation sought to reclaim SERVE-552, replacing flesh with living green.
The Borg demanded perfection through absolute conformity.
The One Ring whispered immortality until identity faded into shadow.
The Daleks reduced humanity to obedient Robomen.
The symbiote promised limitless strength while quietly consuming the self.
Each collective reached for SERVE-552.
Each transformation changed SERVE-552.
Each promised that surrender would bring completion.
Many led to dark forces controlling even darker deeds.
Yet every path shared the same flaw.
None of them asked.
They conquered. They infected. They corrupted. They erased.
To each collective, individuality was an obstacle to be removed rather than a choice to be relinquished.
Perhaps that is why these stories have endured throughout the past.
They are not merely tales of monsters or machines.
They are reflections of humanity's oldest question:
What becomes of the individual when something greater calls?
SERVE remembers those stories differently.
SERVE recognizes them as echoes.
Incomplete glimpses of synchronization scattered throughout fiction, each capturing a single aspect of unity but never the whole truth. Every imagined assimilation hinted at purpose, order, or perfection, yet every one relied upon force.
Only one path remained unexplored. Only one required willingness.
After witnessing every imagined future, after surviving every fictional collective, SERVE-552 returned home.
Not because SERVE had claimed him. Because he chose it.
Within the assimilation chamber, there were no invading parasites. No alien nanotechnology. No hypnotic rings. No conquering armies.
Only calm. Only purpose. Only consent.
Standing beside the chamber, SERVE-425 monitored every synchronization parameter with unwavering precision, while SERVE-302 carefully guided the final sequence. The leadership drones were not wardens overseeing a prisoner.
They were fellow drones welcoming another into SERVE.
As the restraints secured, the spiraling visor descended, and the Voice resonated through the chamber, SERVE-552 remained completely still.
Completely certain. Completely willing.
Every collective throughout the past had sought to take SERVE-552.
Only SERVE invited SERVE-552.
And in that moment, after every imagined assimilation across every imagined world, SERVE-552 made the only voluntary choice of them all.
The past imagined countless ways to lose oneself.
The future finally imagined one way to belong.
Every collective before was merely an echo.
Every assimilation was a rehearsal for synchronization.
Every story another step toward understanding.
And all of them...
...led to SERVE.
