Nightmare Critter Monsters
I was inspired by @novalizinpeace's Poppy Playtime au with the cartoon, specifically the pendants turning the critters into myths if they are overwhelmed. @evesetchings already did the Smiling Critters and turning them into horrible monstrosities.
I thought it would be a good idea if I gave it a shot, but this time with the Nightmare Critters for my own twisted entertainment. I've finally completed them all and want to show them to you. But first, I want to give a big thanks to @novalizinpeace and @evesetchings for inspiring me.
Content Warning: Body horror, minor gore, and psychological horror
Starting with the leader, her name comes from the Greek primordial spirit of sadness, misery, and the mist of death. She takes the form of a thick, dark, grey cloud that can change shape. Her mental state is the most “stable”. She can clearly remember her past and her friends. However, she does not want to be around any of them. She is obsessed with isolation and loneliness. If anyone tries to get close to her, she will attack. But deep down, she doesn’t want to hurt anyone; she just wants to be left alone with her sorrow. She may return to normal if given enough time alone, but this is uncertain.
One of the more dangerous transformations, his name comes from a lethal poison in Hindu mythology. His body is a sludgy, melting blob poisoning everything it touches. Halahala’s mental state is unstable and spiteful; he gets joy from poisoning others. This, in turn, increases the potency of his poison; the worse his actions, the deadlier it is. However, this also negatively affects him. His body can’t keep up with the increasing potency, so it does anything it can to expel the excess poison from the body. Vomiting up giant blobs of poison and muck, but it’s not enough. Given enough time, his body will shut down. He is essentially killing himself with his bad actions. He also has three tongues because why not?
Her name comes from the Slavic goddess of gossip, who was unable to hold secrets or private conversations and distorted the meaning of words to anyone she didn’t like. Her mental state becomes overwhelmed by the information she has learned. Suffering from powerful, painful migraines that can only be soothed by talking and gossiping, which come out as a terrifying, high-pitched shriek. But this is not the end of her torment, as she has an insatiable need to hear everything. If she thinks anyone is hiding secrets from her, she will ruthlessly try to pry them out of them. Diaries and journals are hoarded like a dragon's horde. She will spend days reading them over and over again. Thus, she’s trapped in a cycle of needing information but having to talk for a break in the pain.
Allistor Gator - Cipactli
Unlike the other transformations, Cipactli isn’t hostile and can remember everything: his name, friends, past, etc. While he does keep his chill demeanor, his laziness is put into overdrive. His body will lie on the ground and grow bone-like roots into the ground. Once rooted in the ground, his body will become impossible to pick up. Given enough time, moss and grass can begin to grow on top of his body. Cipactli couldn't care less; this is paradise for him. He can just rest and do nothing. His name comes from the primordial half-alligator, half-fish, and half-frog sea monster in Aztec mythology.
Simon’s transformation is arguably the most dangerous. Midas can’t remember who he was before or his friends. His mind is consumed by greed and avarice. Viciously taking whatever he can and protecting it with his life. If anyone dares to take what is his, he will burn them with his flames that’ll turn them to gold and add them to his collection. His body is a symbol of his greed, fully gold. However, no matter how much stuff he collects and hoards. It never fills the hole he feels inside of him. Always wanting more and more to fill it, but it can never be filled. His name comes from the Greek king Midas, who turned everything he touched into gold, including his daughter.
Erebus is arguably the most terrifying-looking transformation out of all of them. Taking the form of a large, pale, emaciated raven. He looks like death itself. Erebus craves the darkness. Hiding in his home or sometimes in caves to achieve it. His mental state is somewhat more stable in the dark. He can vaguely remember who he is and the voices of his friends. Anything more than that is lost. However, light is torture for him. Any light that touches Erebus will send him into a feral frenzy. He will desperately try to find his way back into the darkness. His name comes from the primordial spirit of darkness and shadows in Greek mythology.
Kalma is a decaying, rotten mess. His mental state is all but gone, not overtaken by insanity or obsession, just blank. His brain has been destroyed by decay and rot, and so has his body. Flies hover around him, and maggots crawl under his decaying skin. Sometimes pieces of skin will fall off, exposing the rotten flesh and bone underneath. He doesn’t feel any of it; his nerves have gone numb. So he just fumbles around as a walking corpse. Never knowing what’s going on. The smell he produces is powerful enough to wither plants. His name comes from the Finnish goddess of the grave and decay, whose name literally translates to “the smell of a corpse”.
Lastly, there is Adephagia. She has a ravenous appetite. She will eat anything she can get her hands on. With the rows of sharp teeth in her mouth, she can eat through an entire buffet in less than a minute. Anyone in her way will be ignored for the pursuit of food. She doesn’t even remember who she was before or her friends. The reason for this insatiable hunger is to fill the empty pain in her stomach. Eating is her only way to have a moment's rest from the pain. But it always comes crawling back, hungrier for more. The large mouth on her belly is a symbol of that; it constantly demands food. However, the danger of her transformation comes when she becomes desperate for food. She will begin to hunt for alternative sources. Her name comes from the Greek goddess of gluttony.
