what a masterpiece arcadia couldve been if it leaned even further into the cis-heteronormative performance that mulder and scully put on as rob and laura (this vision inspired partially by a really good transfem post @mulderpie made). if the arcadia development itself had been more fleshed out, if there had been more stakes with the secretive cult-like element barely suggested- it would have made an intriguing two parter. Queer horror around supposed suburban perfection.

oh absolutely. the motw was eh but i would've loved to see it be a manifestation of heteronormative pressure on msr. mulder's defiance of the neighborhood rules mimicking her gender identity and how it's perceived as disruptive in "normal life" as much as it is in the FBI. scully's apprehensiveness to playing along and clear discomfort with needing to perform as mulder's wife while she's a stereotypical suburban man paired with her obvious love for being able to be so close to mulder.... the monster plaguing the neighborhood really just being a metaphor for societal expectations of these two agents.

maybe this is too woke but i really hate the trope of naked older women = scary or vomit inducing or gross or whatever. like you even see it used in horror on occasion like oooooo so scary theres a woman with saggy boobs and wrinkles. There is something to be said for unconsensual veiwing of nudity. sure. it’s uncomfortable and violating for someone to be nude in front of you that you don’t want to see. but rarely that’s seen as the issue and instead the real ‘horror’ or gross out joke is the very idea of a woman who does not have a body that is sexually desirable to men. The very idea of an older woman’s body is treated like it’s something that we should all know is gross, sick and wrong. It’s just something that really bothers me
