I also like how in TNG, it's like:
Picard: what do you think, number one?
Riker: I think this
Picard: well it seems we agree!
The rest of the crew: we admire our fearless leaders who always keep us safe
And in Voyager it's like
Janeway: I'm doing this thing
Chakotay: captain, I think-
Janeway: I don't care what you think, I do what I want
The rest of the crew: we will follow our captain straight into hell
And in DS9 it's like
Sisko: I do what I want
Kira: I also do what I want
The rest of the crew: we're all gonna do what we want
When Christopher Pike took command of the Discovery:
Tilly babbled away nervously and was the centre of attention.
Pike himself was amused.
The crew... had different reactions.
Star Trek: Discovery, Season 2, Episode 1
It looks like she’s playing Pictionary with someone on the computer.
“It’s a Cat!….uh…A Beatle…..Nevermind I give up”
#battleship with chakotay#he’s sitting across from her#and she’s trying to distract him#because he’s ridiculously good at battleship#and she keeps teasing him that it’s because he’s good at tactics#but it’s really just because he knows her so well#and can read her expressions#and anticipate her moves#so he kicks her ass every time#(except they stop playing toward the end of the journey#and drift apart#but before they leave voyager#they play one last game#and she beats him#because he doesn’t know how to read her anymore#and i just depressed myself whoops)
Why would you do this!
After their game, after the meetings and trials and everything else Starfleet throws at them, after he goes back to Trebus, Chakotay begins to realize what he’s lost. What he gave up when he stopped trying. He’s finally free to do whatever he wants, with no obligations - not to his tribe, not to his family, not to the Maquis or to Starfleet or to his Captain - but finds there’s one promise he made to himself that he WANTS to keep fulfilling. So he goes back to Earth. Gets a little one bedroom apartment in San Francisco, accepts a teaching position at a local college, and Monday mornings he has a single pink rose delivered to Kathryn’s office. Subtly, no fanfare, it’s just there when she gets to work. He doesn’t hear from her for the entire semester, until a few days after classes end, she shows up at his apartment (he isn’t surprised she knows where he lives) with a bottle of Anterian Cider, and they talk, and she’s still guarded but it’s better than it was. So he bribes her with coffee and they start meeting up a few times a week, and he keeps sending the flower, and she keeps randomly showing up at his place with cider (he thinks she might be testing him, but she never says and he’s always alone) until one night she cracks, and asks him what he wants from her, and he doesn’t know what to say because the answer is “everything” - so he says battleship instead, and she gets it, and a few weeks later she shows up with the game, and sometimes she wins and sometimes he wins (and all the while they talk - about their jobs and their pasts and Voyager and the future and little, silly things like how much he likes citrus fruits and Kathryn’s childhood affinity for Shetland ponies) and then one night, they tie - both deadlocked without a move, and he knows (even before the first kiss) that they’re going to be just fine.
(He keeps sending roses regardless.)
Yes. Yes that is a million times better. I’m glad I complained because now we all get to enjoy this.
this.
Oh this is lovely 🥰

TREKGIFS CHARACTER COUNTDOWN TO DISCOVERY SEASON 3 ↳ Three Days
S’chn T’gai Spock “Now does matter. What happened before no longer exists. What will happen next has not yet been written. We have only now. That is our greatest advantage. What we do now, here, in this moment, has the power to determine the future. Instinct and logic, together. That is how we will defeat Control, in the battle to come. We will find a way. All of history can change with our next move. ”
Star Trek Rant: Strange New Worlds and disability
Hi, I’m the easiest person to please when it comes to sci-fi, and I’m even easier to please when it comes to star trek. I will not be trying to sound scholarly or even smart in this post.
That being said I have some issues with strange new worlds and how it keeps having story lines chalk up to the idea that having a disability is worse than death.
Like I get that the original series captain Pike ends up in the chair and that was so scary/cool in the 60s that people went feral over it, but it’s 2022 now and I simply cannot comprehend how no one on the writing/producing staff said “Maybe we should tweak this?”
I bring receipts so my examples are as follows: MAJOR SNW SEASON 1 SPOILERS HERE
1. Captain Pike equating his getting badly injured to a fate worse than death.
2. Hemmer, the blind chief engineer, being killed in the dumbest way possible.
3. M'benga’s daughter’s fatal illness escapist fantasy miracle cure/fridging/character death.
4. Spock’s alternate timeline fate that was being equated to Captain Pike’s original timeline fate.

Kira Nerys is such a groundbreaking character it's almost astonishing to me. Like she is an unapologetic terrorist who fought against an imperialist power, she is extremely strong and competent, she is shown to have a large amount of anger still bubbling inside her, and she is also extremely in touch with all her other emotions! She cries, she yells, she falls in love, and she kicks ass. I just adore her
And you get to see her radiant smile so often, too! She's seen horrible things and she's always angry but that doesn't stop her from experiencing joy!
Truth!
Geordi: You know, D, the Captain gives Doctor Crusher flowers everyday. I wish you'd do that too.
Data: Alright.
*the next day*
Data: *gives beverly flowers*
Beverly: Wh-
Data: I do not understand either.
I think it's silly that the star trek future is still so same-with-same when it comes to alien species. I think a Klingon vessel should comm the enterprise and a random Human ensign should go "Oh my god wait are you from the House of Ragh-Tul? No way! That's my cousin's house!" because they recognize the dialect. Like, we're all neighbors in the universe. That Vulcan is your primary school teacher's daughter. You're an Andorian but you have a Betazoid name because your dad thought it sounded pretty. This random alien knows how to make kimchi without ever having seen a Human because the recipe was part of a trade made decades ago. C'mon man, love thy neighbor with your whole heart!
Blind people must save a lot on electricity.
They do actually!
I had a blind professor, last semester, and I swung through his office to make up an exam. It was a while before I knew he was in there because he was sitting with the lights off. I finally went in, apologized, and took the exam by the light of a nearby window (which was fine). Forty-five minutes into dead silence he panicked and yelled in this booming voiced, “WAIT, YOU CAN SEE!!!” before diving across his desk to turn on the lights. I’m sure he was embarrassed but I thought it was endearing and it highlighted a large aspect of disabled life that I hadn’t previously considered.
Sort of relatedly I once had professor who was deaf, but she had learned to read lips and speak so she could communicate easily with hearing people who didn’t know sign language. One day she had gotten off topic and was talking a little about her personal life, so that one of the students said “Oh, I know, I grew up in Brooklyn too.”
She stared at him for a long time and then said “How do you know I’m from Brooklyn?”
And he said “You have a Brooklyn accent.”
She said “I do?” and the whole class nodded, and then she burst out laughing and said “I had no idea! The school where I learned to speak was in Brooklyn. I learned by moving my mouth and tongue the way my teachers did. So I guess it makes sense that I have their accent, I just never thought about it.”
My moms a sign language interpreter, and she’s signed with people from all over the US. According to her, when she signs with people from the south they sign with a “drawl.” They have slower hand movements and exaggerate certain parts of the sign. People from the Midwest sign very fast and people from the south sign very slow.
So we were at a restaurant once and my mom started interpreting for someone who was trying to order and she was like “oh you’re from the south!”
And they were like “how did you know that?”
And she said “you sign with a drawl.” And they were really surprised that it came through that much.
It’s really interesting that even when not speaking verbally accents and heritage come through.
Humans are so fucking fascinating
