I watched the long walk a couple days ago, and while it didn’t feel as impactful as the book did, I thought there were some really interesting choices and one especially, I kept thinking about: the way those boys are shown to die changes throughout the movie. The first few are shown up close, each gory detail visible, the brain on the road. But we knew they were gonna die, they say that in the beginning of the movie, right? So of course there’s splatter. However starting at the hill the deaths become a bit more obscure, you see them falling but not every bloody face in a close up. Towards the end you only hank and collie‘s death is shown in detail, both of which chose to die by their own means. Art and stebbins tho- it feels like the movie steps back. Blurs it out as a sign of respect ? decency? We no longer want to enjoy the spectacle. Because we cannot bear to watch friends be killed , they are no longer simple boys, chess pieces or cattle in a larger game, they have faces and meaning and they matter.
