I had this horrible vision that the “papyrus is gaster” theories were true and it was because that it turned out that royal scientist WD Gaster was actually a human and his creation ripped him apart metaphysically AND physically and papyrus is actually his skeleton lmao
Papyrus's unresolved 'innocence' issue in undertale may be ironicly foreshadowing him having previously committing more morally dubious actions.
(ALSO when i mention papyrus's innocence I'm mostly referring to the whole problem with undyne keeping him from knowing how actually close he is to receiving royal guard status due to his 'innocence' despite his strong fighting skills. How that is a continued lie and how that decision to leave it unresolved by choosing to keep him blind to the true nature of his job position and why he's there, I believe this completley goes against the messaging regarding alphys's arc)
Obviously toby fox does have flaws in his writing, however he is mainly incredible at writing complex and compelling stories, creating well thought out characters and character arcs, and explores themes and messages in a way that you can't help but let it pull at your heart strings. But papyrus's character specifically is not only a consistent character througout undertale so a highlight on his character is therefore placed but he is also incredibly mysterious. For one thing papyrus is very contradictory in his actions, beliefs, dialogue l. iterally everything he says he somehow contradicts it in the next sentence or by another action.
I don't believe this was done without purpose.
I believe this was to add/ hint towards certain aspects of his character.
And while I do believe he is being mostly a 100% genuine in the game with regards wanting to be the best person he can be and helping everyone else around him be the best person they can be and truly being just an absolute sweetheart.
He is very morally grey when it comes to knowing certain things about what's considered 'right' or 'wrong'. Like the murder bridge he calls a puzzle, he realises that it's too much and it's an actual threat at THE LAST SECOND. And not as he built it? Also he mentioned how spikes and more dangerous kinda traps were perfect for kids to play with? Like no???
Also I'd like to remind everyone that in a neutral ending he did work for a dictator basically. (Mettaton I believe?)
Anyways with that morally grey value set in the back of our minds, doesn't that make papyrus's innocence in undertale a contradiction? It seems more like a distraction, like it's leading us in the in wrong direction ON PURPOSE??
This is going into more head cannon territory now but, when we look at papyruses favourite books ultimate puzzle book and the 'tales of fluffy bunny' which is a children's book that is possibly created with the intention of teaching kids BASIC morals and principals like 'be kind to everyone' of course we can either pass this off as either showing off one of his two main interests/ personality traits (him being both smart and childish) or we can look at this choice in books him having to LEARN basic morals. (and both options are totally viable and absolutely in character in my opinion, let adults like childish things! It's not a crime and it fits him)
Like he realises the consequences of his actions but he never perceived them as a bad thing, but instead as something that just occurred.
Such as a "Oh! My puzzle killed a dude by severely torturing them over a series of 3 days? Well that's not too good, what a mess I'll have to clean up!"
What if he never got the chance to at first learn these basics moral/ value sets and after realising the acts he was committing were not too cool and it did actually matter, he immediately switched up and in present undertale he's a really reformed villain or even potentially a creation of some sort?
If papyrus was a super reformed bad guy in undertale it would make his decision about wanting frisk + the player to become a better person. He understands the horrible acts they've committed, he's scared of death but he relates. And if he could become a better person, then so could the human!
For a less dramatic outcome, maybe pre utale papyrus could potentially (or more likely) act more like his original inspiration Dedan from OFF!
Here's a list of his character traits (I think? I'm not sure)
-nasty temperment
-vulgar language
-constantly enraged
-constant cruelty to staff and just everyone around him
-no patience for ineptitude
And more I believee
(I don't know anything about this game, I got this off the fan wiki)
Edit:
This honestly just sounds like an extreme version of papyrus. Holyshit
Obviously this does have some plot holes in it, like sans's role. He's his brother, where could he possibly be in all this chaos that's happening with his brother? Why didn't he help him realize his actions were bad? Etc etc.
I'm not sure, I haven't really thought about this theory too much but this is just me looking way to into his dialogue in undertale specifically.
Anyways, even not considering this as a theory I think this would be a sick ass au.
I love seeing a more morally grey papyrus (even though it hurts my soul because I'm a sucker for fluff and everything being ok)
And no, I'm not saying that he's not important. In fact, he's one of the most important plot devices. But why Papyrus ?
List of stuff Papyrus did for the plot :
Helped Frisk befriend Undyne
Gathered everyone in the Pacifist ending
Worldbuilding (phonecalls)
Characters' personalisation (phonecalls)
Told Frisk to go to the True Lab (phonecalls)
Basically the reason we were able to get the Pacifist ending
Quite a lot, but it all could be easily done by the others.
Befriending Undyne? Alphys. Being manipulated by Flowey? Monster kid. Info dumping on the phone? Sans.
Even among the main characters he seems a bit off.
Toriel is the caretaker of the ruins and former queen. Sans is the royal judge. Undyne is the capitan of the royal guard. Alphys is the royal scientist. Mettaton is the biggest star of the underground. Asgore is the king. Asriel (flowey) is the prince.
And Papyrus is… just some guy.
He could easily be a secondary character like Napstablook. Especially considering his lack of backstory, no character development and a skippable battle in which you can't even die.
But instead he has the biggest amount of words in the game, huge impact on the characters in all of the endings, very detaled hangout/date and a PERSONAL Q&A (also the entire Underale Q&A was centered around him).
What about Deltarune
Papyrus didn't show up in DR yet, but I can feel with my GUTS that he'll be important.
We all know that DR was in Toby's brain even before Undertale, and also we know that Bonetrousle was meant for DR.
Based on some theories about ch3, we can assume that the characters from UT actually might play some big roles in DR.
So… you can tell what I'm trying to say here, right? What if the reason why Papyrus is so important in the game AND in a lot of additional stuff is because he's going to play some role in DR and even have a character arc or be shown from unusual side.
And this “busy” is hunting me 24/7. Too suspicious.

Now I'm curious: how do you see Chapter 5 ending? No need for a comic or sketch, just an explanation will suffice!
Oh sheesh, okay, might as well just write out my fanfiction nonsense as a summary or the like!
Keep in mind that this is 1) how I would incorporate a reveal for my Susie crack theory as well, and 2) just for the normal route. Weird route is outside my purview; I think it'd lead to the same basic conclusion but with vastly different circumstances.
Also uh, this got pretty long, soooo under a cut it goes!
I figure that we’ll be doing the dark world in Asgore’s shop first, then the festival afterwards. Maybe Asgore is hanging back to actually clean up the shop after a dark world scuffle, or if things have gone really sideways and he needs to seriously rethink whatever he’s been involved with. Either way, he’s gotta fix something important before Asriel arrives. Kris and Susie do get the police shelter code from him, at least. They stop by Castle Town again with new recruits, and assuming the secret boss was defeated, there’s enough shadow crystals now for Seam to forge their special something.
The two do stop by the shelter again, and the code from Asgore works! However, they still need two other codes. Well, they still don’t know how to avoid that final prophecy, the Knight is becoming far more brazen in their appearances, and they’re running out of time to figure this out...but at least they’ve made some progress on the shelter, Castle Town’s just about full now, and Seam’s special something could give them a big advantage. Maybe if they keep looking and trying they can solve this! Either way, there’s a festival they promised to attend, so it’s off to that.
The festival’s going to be packed with people and all of the side stories that might be brewing with them! Pizzapants learns about being catfished, perhaps some development happens between Bratty and Catty, and the Cattenheimer sisters in general. Papyrus finally shows up...but, believing this was a Halloween festival, is in full costume, so we still don’t know exactly what he looks like.
Kris has been acting weirder and more antsy all chapter, though, and it seems like they’re talking more frequently with people in the conspiracy whenever they get a moment. To that end, they remove the soul, and it ends up in some kind of container -a takeout box, or prize box, whathaveyou- that gets passed around various parties in equally humorous and terrifying manners.
Carol’s attempts to prevent Susie and Noelle from meeting up are thwarted, and her means of isolating Susie are limited…she can’t accuse Susie of trashing the church without also implicating Kris, not to mention Undyne and now Alvin have mysteriously gone missing. The two lesbians finally get to have their date! There’s more awkward teenage festival romance, winning prizes, getting snacks, learning more about each other; it’s all going great! Susie isn’t great at the games, but does win her a new pencil. There’s some hints of underlying problems...Noelle mentions that she’s noticed this strange figure that’s been skirting around the edges of the festival, just out of her line of sight...like it’s stalking her. Susie assures her that she’ll protect her from any stalkers. Of course the date’s topped off with a ride on the ferris wheel, and perhaps even their first kiss!
However, on the ride, Susie makes unmistakable comparisons to their first ferris wheel ride, and so accidentally lets slip that the dark worlds are real. She can’t really talk her way out of it. Noelle is shocked by this and demands to know why she was lied to. Susie admits some of why she wanted to keep it secret, how she was worried for Noelle’s safety, all of that. Noelle reluctantly accepts this...this is a big deal and she’s really worried about what this could mean, but at least she knows now, right? They can work through this, somehow. Hopefully.
“You’re not keeping any more big secrets from me, right Susie?”
“No,” Susie lies.
The two exit the ride into a large crowd; Kris and everyone else of note are present. It’s then that Carol makes her move – staging an “accident” wherein Susie is suddenly struck across the nose or face, drawing blood. Noelle’s shocked – “Susie, you’re bleeding!” Susie is ready to throw hands with Carol, but assures her it’s nothing, just a cut…
Until Noelle clarifies it with asking how she’s bleeding, and Susie is left confused. Why is ‘how’ a question here? Carol then springs her trap, demonstrating with one of her katanas: because monsters don’t bleed. “You didn’t even know, did you?” Carol sneers.
Susie is suddenly surrounded on all sides by a crowd of Hometown residents gaping at her, and immediately falls into panic. Carol reveals that with a little digging into the town’s records, she’s found out some things about just who Susie is and where she came from, and she strikes a final blow: “No wonder your behavior is so. Aberrant. What else could be expected from a half-human freak.”
Susie flees the festival in tears, feeling completely destroyed in front of the community she was trying so hard to finally find a home with. Noelle tries to immediately run after her, but Carol grabs her arm, warning her not to follow. Noelle resists more, and still Carol holds on, until Noelle says, “Mom, you’re hurting me!”
This seems to snap Carol out of what she was doing, and she lets go. But before Noelle can run after Susie, she says sharply, “Noelle, before you run from me. Think very carefully. Do you truly want to share your heart with someone who keeps such an important thing from you? What else do you think she’s keeping from you?”
This stops Noelle in her tracks. She did just learn about the dark worlds being real, and then Susie promised her there were no other secrets...what if there is more? Feeling completely crushed, she bursts into tears and runs off into the festival.
The crowd erupts into a quiet, scandalized buzz, although actually stopping to talk to them would show they’re more upset at the mayor’s cruelty than Susie’s secret. Kris does approach the mayor, giving her a poisonous glare.
“Don’t give me that look, Kris. I’ve just done all three of you a great favor. This will...make things easier for you.”
And she then leaves to get herself cleaned up. From here, the player has to choose between one of three final scenes; you can’t see all of them together. You’d need to either reload from a save or use different save files! What you get depends on who you pass the soul-in-a-prize-box to:
1) Pass it to Sans
2) Keep it with Kris
3) Pass it to Rudy
Pass it to Sans
Sans nonchalantly mentions going to get some air, and if you pass the box to him, he goes to find Susie sobbing on the bench in the graveyard. He tries to approach her, but she just screams at him to get lost.
“What that mayor lady said...you know it’s not true, right? You’re not a freak. You’re just a kid,” he says. She screams at him again to leave her alone. What would he ever know about how she feels? Well, he scoots down next to her and then “accidentally” gives himself a cut on the prize box, drawing blood. “Huh, wouldja look at that? They make that cardboard sharper every year.”
Susie’s shocked out of her crying at this reveal. Wait...he’s like her?! Sans assures her that she’s certainly not the only one of her kind in the world. He gets that it’s rough often, but hey...it seems like she’s already got some real good friends that’ll stand by her, as long as she doesn’t push them away. Susie’s had her worldview shifted a lot in quick succession, but at the very least, the terrible impressions Sans left her with last chapter are starting to turn around.
She finally starts to calm down and they start to have a bit a conversation, being two monsters with a penchant for breaking society’s rules. As for Papyrus? Well, that’s a bit of a complicated matter. In the middle of their conversation, however, Sans glances towards the sky… “Huh, looks like rain’s comin’.”
Susie looks up, and she immediately recognizes the thick, black cloud that’s forming over the festival. “Oh crap!!” And she’s off running back to the festival.
Keep it with Kris
Kris also takes off after Susie as soon as they can get away, but unlike Sans, they get intercepted...by Asriel! He’s finally made it back home, and embraces his sibling, asking how things are going, and willing to answer questions in turn. Kris is trapped in a situation that they absolutely did not want to have happen...an opportunity for the player to find out everything they can about their brother.
Of course the player forces Kris to grill Asriel on all the info we can get our hands on...yeah, this is what he’s studying. Remember those embarrassing things he did when they were both younger? Did he mention he’s got a new partner? Kris gets increasingly agitated as the conversation goes on. No, don’t ask about dad right now! No, don’t ask what mom’s been up to! No, don’t ask about the friends they’ve made! Asriel finally notices that Kris is acting, well...very weird. Just what’s going on? “C’mon, Kris, you can always tell me!”
But before the player manages to really screw things up for Kris, Asriel notices a figure that seems to be watching them from just behind the trees. Who’s eavesdropping on them? Wait a minute...those antlers…
It couldn’t be...could it?!
Asriel takes off after the figure as it vanishes into the forest, but before he can get far, the two are suddenly overtaken by a roiling black cloud spreading out from the festival.
Pass it to Rudy
Rudy, who’s made the effort to get to the festival, is horrified at what’s gone down between his wife and his daughter...but right now his focus has to be on Noelle. Not really knowing or caring why Kris has handed him this box, he runs after Noelle. She’s lost in her own turmoil, and at first doesn’t hear him calling after her.
By the time she turns and sees him, though, he’s expended way more energy than he actually has to spare. “Noelle, wait…” he gasps out her name a final time before collapsing. Terrified, Noelle immediately runs to his side and tries to rouse him. He doesn’t respond...just ragged, shallow, coughing breaths, getting further and further apart.
Noelle cries for help from someone, anyone nearby. But no one’s paying attention; too caught up in the commotion from earlier, or off attending to something else. Who knows where her mom is now? Susie and Kris are nowhere nearby.
Noelle’s mind races through options. Everything seems to have gone wrong...her date with Susie was ruined, there seems to be something terribly wrong with Kris, something is stalking her, her father is dying in her arms; the whole world seems to be falling apart. But...she now knows that her dream was real. There’s someplace she can go with healing magic; someplace where she can shape the world itself. Where she can finally take back some control over her life!
She grips the pencil that Susie won for her, concentrates all her will into the point, and stabs the earth, releasing a new dark fountain into the open outdoors of the festival.

Assuming the theory that Papyrus is from Deltarune is true- HE’S GROWN A LOT. The massive difference between him in Deltarune vs Undertale makes me so emotional, going from staying inside 247, and supposedly being too scared to even respond to knocks at his door, to being the most sociable, positive man alive….UGH.
WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM???
this is just so gorgeous…And it made me think of him so I had to
Many players have expressed disappointment over not being able to interact with sans' brother Papyrus. However, despite not making a direct appearance, Papyrus's influence has been seen throughout the entire game:

Papyrus WILL appear in chapter 5. Papyrus WILL show up at the festival. Papyrus WILL prove to the fandom that he's more than a hollow joke or an "innocent cinnamon roll" or just straight up overlooked. Papyrus WILL be significant I'm TELLING YOU.
Papyrus being missing so far in Deltarune WILL be significant. His casual breaking of physics and constant hints and mentions of how powerful he is in Undertale WILL also be a thing in Deltarune.
Toby fox told me all of this personally. Source: trust me bro
