You Are Mine - Secrets Of The Soul
Carlisle & Sulpicia
"You seem especially troubled today, Carlisle," Sulpicia said softly, absentmindedly turning a fallen leaf between her slender fingers. Of course she had noticed ...
He forced himself to smile, but she was not deceived. Lady Sulpicia possessed the rare ability to see through both humans and vampires without ever making them feel exposed. It was the complete opposite of the unsettling sensation that accompanied Master Aro whenever he drew information directly from one's mind.
Carlisle sighed quietly.
"I ... find it more difficult than I expected," he admitted. "To restrain myself on one hand while indulging my thirst on the other. To know that ..." He searched for the right words. "That the thirst will never truly disappear. That no matter how hard I try, it merely sleeps for a while. And that I am supposed to ... well ... welcome it instead of condemning it."
Sulpicia nodded slowly, as though she herself had fought that very battle countless times. She understood the endless conflict raging within him. She, too, had never been able to find any sort of healthy middle ground. Her mind seemed capable only of absolutes: either shutting off her morality entirely or embracing complete abstinence.
For whenever she allowed herself even the illusion that she could moderate or control her consumption, she would find herself only days later surrounded by bloodless bodies once again ... It had happened far too many times. Too many times she had succumbed to her instincts.
She herself could never understand how other vampires, like her husband, were capable of maintaining such balance. Blood was everywhere, always within reach. And surrendering to that intoxicating ecstasy was unimaginably tempting. Every part of her body cried out, begging her to finally give in.
And precisely because she could never find moderation, she had chosen one of the two extremes instead.
Did that make her strong?
Perhaps.
In the eyes of many vampires, however, she knew it made her seem weak.
"Tell me," Carlisle asked, his voice tinged with quiet desperation, "is there truly nothing that can lift this burden from us?" He shook his head almost helplessly.
"I'm afraid not," she answered softly. "I've imposed every imaginable rule of moderation upon myself, only to arrive at the very same outcome every time. I even considered living on animal blood, but it never satisfied my true thirst." She looked at him with a faint smile. "The only fascinating side effect during that time was that my eyes turned golden."
