Chapter 8
Calm After The Storm + Blooming Workplace RomanceÂ
The curses in the area fled after the veil had come down, and the special grade you had originally been battling did too, claiming they âwerenât arrogant enough to fight Satoru Gojo.'
Your leg throbs and aches as you falter and take a knee, still gazing up at Gojo, who had seemingly disappeared out of the sky to most likely take care of more pressing matters. Yuuji, bless his heart, kneeled by your side, concerned as Todo warns you all to not move.Â
âI'm the damn adult, you don't tell me what to do!â You bicker lightly.
With a sigh, your eyes flutter shut, feeling lightheaded as your thigh bleeds through the cloth you wrapped around it.Â
Shoko took the time to heal you, tending to Megumiâs injuries and putting him on bedrest, but recommending the same for you. You exhale, leg weak after healing. Beside the bed was a curtain separating you from another bed on the far side of the room, and you can't help but let your mind race.Â
How did he do itâŚlift the veil? And why had he looked directly at you when it came down?
Your stomach twists, dread filling your empty belly once again as your mind races with scenarios, searching for a reason as to why! Why was all of this happening? What was the real reason they sent you here?
It couldn't have been just for YuujiâŚand if there were spies within this small community plotting against eachother, who's to say you weren't liable to be caputes and used for someone's selfish gain?
The creak of the door snaps you out of your thoughts, and you're met with a soft hazel eye and sharp cheekbones. He's holding flowers, a get-well-soon offering.
âNanami,â You smile, standing slowly to greet him.Â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âSoooo these mothafuckas ran up in here, found the storage room, and stole from yallâŚand we not doin shit about it?â You laugh, mostly in disbelief.Â
âMind you, not just any special grade cursed objects. We're talkin Sukuna fingers and cursed womb shitâŚall of it. GONE?!âÂ
The room is silent, and you shake your head in disbelief. More shit for you to file and send to the states. More shit that you're getting yourself deeper in... the closer you brush with death.Â
Miami crosses your mind, and it only makes you sad. You're sitting here, spending your days on the brink of death at any given moment while everyone else gets to spend their days living happily in the sun, sippin' margaritas and bonding over dumb shit on a boat somewhere probablyâŚ
âWeâre still waiting on reports from Ieri, but we're sure it's the same cursed spirit Nanami and L/N encountered before.âÂ
Gojo grunts, and your somach turns.Â
âI had a nightmare about that fool last night-â You mutter, rolling your eyes.Â
This shit was getting to be too much. You couldn't say you weren't getting paid enough causeeee that last check was real niceâŚbut still. You sigh, overly stressed out.
âShould we share the information with the students and the other sourcerers?â Utahime asks, unsure.Â
You shake your head, leaning against the wall beside Gojo.Â
âNah, should be on a need-to-know basis, I feel like.â You voice, surprisingly Gakuganji agreeing with you.Â
Yaga chimes in and you nod, solidifying the agreement.
âHas the captured curse user talked?â Yaga asked, attention turning back to Ijichi
âGetting him to talk isn't the problem, but everything he says is just irrelevant nonsense.â
You sigh, massaging the phantom pain in your leg before squinting your eyes in thought. According to the interrogation, everyone should be on the lookout for a they/them monk with a fuckass bob?Â
âSounds like he bullsittin.â You smack your lips.
âThe guy sounds like a bullshitter.â Gojo bites back simultaniously.
You fight a laugh, glancing at Gojo from your standing position, realizing he's already kind of looking at you. It makes your stomach flutter.
âHow were they able to get through all of Tengen's barriers?â Utahima questions and tou pipe up again.Â
âThe cursed spirit that the kids and I fought. Somethin with the foliage they could use and manipulate.â You mutter, tapping your chin in thought.Â
âThat one had a unique presence. It's incredibly close to a natural spirit despite it being a cursed spirit. Aoi said it was able to hide among plants, and Tengen's barrier doesn't function against plants.â Gojo explains.Â
âSomething's not rightâŚâ You murmur, Utahime and Gojo nodding.Â
âOf course, weâll have to cancel the exchange event.â Yaga hums, Gojo disagreeing.Â
Leaning against the fence wasn't how you expected things to go. But apparently the kids really wanted the exchange event to continue! So, now decked out in baseball gear, you monitor the kids game.
Even though this wasnât supposed to happen at all, Gojo managed to sneak a baseball option in, and though you hated to admit it, this was a damn good idea.
âOkay button upppp,â You tease, walking towards Gojo with a playful grin. Yuuji sticks his tongue out in disgust at the obvious flirting.Â
Gojo only smiles, one hand soved in his pocket.Â
âNot bad yourself, much better than an oversized uniform?â He jokes, mentioning the potato sack of a sorcerer uniform from before.Â
âYouâre hilarious.â You huff, walking to the eges of the outfield, still monitoring.Â
Perfect timing too, cause when green bob (Mai) brings out a copper pitching machine with the robot's (Mechamaruâs) face painted over it, Nobara goes ballistic.Â
âWhat the hell is that?!â She yells, crashing out and throwing her bat to the ground in irritation.Â
âWhoop âer ass Kugisaki! Fighting on the feild is allowed!â You call out with a mischievous grin.Â
âNuh uh! Thatâs only in hockey!â Yuuji corretcs with a half laugh, moving to hold Nobara back.
Soon after Nobara, Maki is up to bat. Its a home runand the cheer that leaves your lips is soon cut short when the blong pigtail girl (Nishimiya) catches it in the air.Â
âBoy ainât no way boy-â You groan, catching Gojoâs faint smile.
âCheater!â Yuuji agrees.
~~~~~~~~later~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The bowl steaming in front of you looked beyond delicious and your stomach practically howled in demand of food. You swallow, skillfully picking up your chopsticks and scooping up a chunk of rice and thinly sliced beef.Â
 With one bite, you're already humming and rubbing your knees in satisfaction, eyes closed as you slightly rock in the seat.Â
âBaybeeeeee,â You sigh, chewing the combination happily.Â
âDid you just put me on???â You chuckle, already working on scooping up another mouthful.Â
Gojo grins, scooping up a bite himself, before nodding. He gives you a look that screams, âits good as hell, aint it?â
There's a brief silence as you eat, and when you swallow your last bite, you manage to speak. Gojo had completely finished his bowl (which you didn't even realize he had done) and was simply watching you.Â
It was nice having this after everything that had happened the last few days. He owed you a meal anyway,
âSoooo,we friends now?â You ask with a lopsided smile, examining your nails.
âI think we got off on the wrong foot before. Consider this an olive branchâ He hums,arms folded over his chest. He hasnt looked away from you not once.Â
âMhmm mkay.â You mutter, suddenly feeling small under his gaze.
âWhy havenât you been promoted sooner. Taking on a special grade is impressive.â Gogo acknowledges.Â
Yeah, you had stepped in, but Yuuji and Todo had done just fine without you. In fact, Yuuji had gotten much stronger in just 30 minutes with Todo as his âmentorâ.
You sip your water, shaking your head. Back in the states its easy for black women to be put on a lower level. Not that you werenât capableâŚbut they fear that. Strong, capable, smart black women are scarier to them than the curses they force you to exorcise.Â
You simply shrug to respond to teh question resting your fist in your hand. Gojo was a special grade sorcerer⌠But you were sure you wouldn't have been able to break the veil like he had.
Part of you felt that you weren't nearly as strong as him butâŚthat was a feeling everyone had.
The same level as GojoâŚ
The thought rings in your head, and you can't shake it away. Especially after reading his file, you never would have put yourself up there.
You sigh, tucking a braid behind your ear sheepishly.
âGettin' all shy on me, Miss Y/n?â He asks teasingly, and you roll your eyes, quickly smacking your lips.Â
âBoyaintnobodyshy.â You spit quickly, very obviously flustered. This was stupid, this guy was a complete asshole when you first met and now heâs getting you dinner?Â
âI justâŚI didnât think I was on the same wavelength as you?â You huff, simply in disbelief.Â
âDon't sell yourself short, I see you. And they look up to you.â He nods, tone firm.
It's not teasing or jokingâŚit's dead ass serious. And beneath the blindfold, you know heâs looking right at you. Your breath catches, and suddenly you're that same little girl who felt like she had so much to prove.
Trying to make her mark with a crowd that would always view her as âjust y/nâ when deep down she was meant for so much moreâŚbut this felt different.
 Like you didnât have to prove to Gojo you deserved your rank or show you were more than capable. He already knew you did.
âSo, what was that with Yuuji calling you mom?â He chuckles, smile back on his glossy pink lips.
âHuh, oh! Yeah ion know what that was all about but uhhh?â You shrug shaking your head fondly at the memory.Â
âHe ainât slip up and called you dad?â You ask, biting into the gyoza that Gojo had offered (you two decided to split it).
âNahhhhh, I think Iâm more of a glorified big brother.â He explains, hands resting behind his head.
You nod, definitely seeing the dynamic a little bit.Â
âYou meet his new homie already?â You giggle, quirking a brow as you snap your fingers to try and recall.Â
âWhussa name, uhh the boy with the scar- well, the big one from Kytoto?â You ask, snapping your fingers in recollection.Â
âAoi Todo? Yes, hes a 3rd year.â Goji hums, keeping the conversation flowing for a while
Thereâs another stretch of silence, and the bill finally comes to the table. You pause, Gojo already placing a metal card into the tray, and your eyes widen.Â
He scribbles something onto the receipt with a satisfied sigh.
âItâs on me.â He hums, standing from the seat with a smile.
 He leaves, your eyes following him out the door as the waitress sets both the card and the receipt in front of you with a small bow.Â
âGimmie a call later? And just bring me the card tomorrowâ~Gojo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night, you stared up at the ceiling, thinking. And god is it frustrating because you've been here for damn near an hour trying to close your eyes and knock out.
 But every time youre lips squeeze shut, he's behind them.Â
Smiling, looking at you. Or sometimes its jsut his hands, or his jaw, or his lips. This most recent daydream was of him, his hair down and unslicked with gel like it had been days prior.
Your brain conjured images of his face without the blindfold, then of him looking down at you, one hand with a handful of your ass. And another of him with his long, slender fingers tangled in your braids, gripping a fistful as he guided your head-
Your eyes pop open and you shoot out of bed, heading to the bathroom to splash cold water on your face.Â
âWhat the fuckâŚâ You mutter, looking at the time.Â
You growl, taking a deep breath before scrolling through your contacts. You hesitate, tossing your phone on the bed and shake your head with a scoff. Itâs not until you hear the dial tone rining that you panic and scramble to end it.
âEverything okay?â It sounds slightly panicked but calculated.Â
âY/n?â His voice is sleepy and there a bit of shuffling. No way getting out of this one.Â
You take a breath and answer.Â
âUh sorry I... was an accidentâŚI just felt bad about keeping your card!â You sigh, moving to hang up but his response stops you.Â
âOh well its no problem. When I asked you to call I didnât know itâd be this late.â He chuckles on the other side as you do the same but far more nervous.Â
âDo you uhâŚdamn.â He pauses, swearing under is breath.Â
âYou wanna meet up?â He asks, hesitant still.
By 2:15 youâre already out the door and catching a taxi to his flat in Shinjuku.
Your palms sweat in the taxi, the driver giving you a dirty look in the rearview mirror. Still, youâre quick to jerk you neck at him as if to say âcan help you???â This wasnt your proudest moment and you werenât exactly sure what this would lead to. Itâs unprofessional to say the least, and you know 2:55 am isnt withing business hours.
 You take a breath, collecting your purse before exiting the cab. The building is tall, looming over the city. You swallow, looking at the speaker with a tiny button meant to call up. Double checking your messages, you look over Gojo's instructions again, and damn you were anxious.Â
âPress the red button and the ĺ
 kanji. Its directly to my floor and Iâll buzz you in.â
You swallow, doing exaclty that as the building door rings and unlocks. The complex is clean, each door awfully luxurious looking and even the elevator looked like it was plated with gold.Â
You clutch his card in your hand, stepping out of the elevator and onto floor 6 as quickly as you had entered it.Â
You donât have to look for him, because heâs already standing outside his door, looking just as you imagined hours ago.Â
He looks tired, blindfold discarded for a pair of dark, round, thick sunglases. Heâs sporting a pair of black socks that match the compression shirt that squeezes his chest and arms. You swallow thickly, waving at him and avoiding the obvious print outlines through the greay sweatpants.Â
It looked at you first and youâd die by that statement.
He flashes a smile, running a hand through his hair, which was slightly wet and flat. Much different from its usual slicked up and styled state.Â
Gojo makes way for you to enter and your heart drops when you realize its pitch black. You squint, trying your best to see but you cant. You clear your throat, just barely making out his frame as the door closes. Heâs setting the glasses down, letting out a tired sigh.Â
âU-Um, Gojo? Itâs dark as shit in here.â You mumble nervously, and he gives a faint âAh, sorry!â
âDo you always keep it like this?â You ask, taking baby steps to try and navigate the flat.
He chuckles, the breeze from him moving around sending chills up your spine. Itâs slightly unnerving that he seems to be functioning fine while you're stumbling in the dark.Â
You swallow, cursing yourself for agreeing to this as if he couldnât say fuck it and kill you. This was dangerous and you were more of less in a vulnerable situation.Â
âYeah actually. The blindfold isn't just to show offâŚ.well, a little.â He chuckles, baritone vibrating off the walls and your stomach clenches.Â
âCan I be nosy and ask why?â You mumble, palms finally hitting something firm, but kind of soft.Â
âItâs the six eyes, the extrasensory perception makes everything overstimulating.âHe mumbles a little exhausted.Â
Your fingers travel upwards and whatever you were touching rises and falls gently, shuddering a little. You grip what feels like fabric, moving down until you can feel his hips and the elastic waistband of his sweats, immediately retreating your hands.Â
Youâd felt him up unintentionally.
âBlindfoldkeeps me from straining. Wasnât in the file?â He asks, chucking a little.Â
Not that you could see (at least he hoped), but a blus crept up his neck and sat just beneaht his blindfold, scorching the tips of his ears.
âDamn my fault,â You laugh nervously, swallowing hard.
âI can hit the lights hold on.â He reassures, tone soft and kind of sweet.Â
The warmth from the close proximity leaves but the lights flicker on, bright enough to see, dim enough to be comfortable for him. Itâs a nice place, clean and furnished.Â
Just out the corner of your eye you can see him trying the blindfold loosely. His arms flex, the veins drawing along his wrist and up into this bicep make your mouth water.Â
You curse yourself for objectifying him but you can see that stupid ass smirk on his face and remember that he can see you practically eye-fucking him.
The silence is almost deafening but its not long before heâs got music going very faintly. At least to make things less awkward. You drop your bag on one of the side chairs before taking a seat with a sigh, he hold up a bottle, offering a nightcap and you want to decline but shrug your shoulders instead.
 You'd gotten this far so why not.Â
âWanna tell me why I got a booty call from my coworker at 2 in the morning?â He asks with at smig grin, coming to you with a concoction mixed in a fancy looking glass as he sipped from his own.Â
You swallow the brown liquid, wincing a little before setting it down on the coffee table.Â
âWanna tell me why yo ass answered?â You shoot back with a raised brow.Â
He chuckles, sitting on the couch with hands behind hi shead. You tense, trying not to stare.Â
âIs it wrong for me to want to make sure youâre alright?â He asks, the question making you think harder than necessary.Â
Had you actually been in danger he would have rushed to your aid. No doubt. You swallow, taking another sip of the brink, finishing it off.Â
âI guess not, but why couldn't you sleep either?â You as, tucking your heels beneath your legs, facing him criss cross applesauce now.Â
âSaying âi dont knowâ would be a lie to keep things as professional as possible but honestly speaking , its because I was thinking about you.â He mutters, finally coming clean with his jaw working the longer he sat.Â
His gaze is soon directed towards you and you swallow hard, throbbing hard enough it makes your legs squeeze.Â
âThis shit ainât professional anymore. Wasnât professional to begin with.â You respond, mind flashbackig to your first meeting.Â
âYeah, I donât think your coworker needs to know how badly you wanted to throw ass in Miami.â Gojo jokes, your pout making him laugh harder.
âWhateverrrr, I was really pissed off cause you were late and it was hot as hell!â You scoff, seeing his grin soften listening to you talk.Â
âYou turned off your infinity for me.â You point and he stiffens, like heâd been caught.Â
That bit wasnât exactly in the description, but you put it together yourself after reading it. Its a smart way to use his technique. All speculation until he confirmed or denied.
He doesn't respond, only grabbing the glasses and moving to the sink. Yeahhh he did that shit.
You frown slightly, following him as he drops them into hot water and begins scrubbing.Â
âYou didâŚwhy would you do that? You never do that!? At least thats what your file sai-â
âAgain with the fuckin file!â He snaps, more irritated now, turning to with slightly wet hands and flexed forearms.
 Your chest squeezed, ears ringing at the snap. He sees you go frigid, now gripping the edge of the sink.
âAre you here to talk like were coworkers and analyze me because we can pretend this didn't happen and play this game in the morning.â He states plainly, chest rising a bit faster now.Â
Heâs on edge, like he doesn't want to admit he'd rather not have this be a professional friendly â4am hangoutâ. He didn't want ot be coworkers. He liked being 'friends'.
But what he wanted? Gojo wasn't allowed to want.
âNo. Donât act like this shit wasn't weird to begin with Iâm to take all the blame.â You spit back, attitude sharp and you know heâll return it.
âYeah alright.â He huffs, moving past you as you quickly follow, brows furrowed.Â
âDonât get in ya feelings cause I called this shit out!â You continue, watching him lean agaisn the doorway with an unreadable expression (damn blindfold).Â
âYou cool n everything Gojo, but if youâre tryna have this be something else you need to say that shit with yo chest or we can nip this in the bud right now.â You scoff, looking him up and down, even more pissed off that he had just wasted your time.Â
Heâs standing in front of you with folded arms and his lips in a thin line, as if he were weighing pros and cons.Â
âYou wanna get into somethin with me or not bruh.â You question, throwing your hands up as he pinches the bridge of his nose.Â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The usual morning routine commenced, your eyes dark and tired from literally only sleeping for about 3 hours. You tug on something simple, not before eyeing the sizable chunk in your thigh, uneven and scarred despite Shokoâs healing.Â
Tying your braids back with a patterned scarf, you force yourself to smudge on liner, mascara, and lip gloss.
Maybe the conbini had one of those nifty little energy boosting elixirs?Â
The train was crowded, your stomach yearned for food as the alcohol from hours earlier burned your stomach. Upon arrival to Jujutsu High, you were immediately greeted by three smiling faces.Â
âWhoaaa Miss l/n you look tired?â Yuuji mentions, you eyes narrowing almost immediatly but Nobara beet your t the punch, her fist landing atop his head as she scolds him.Â
âYou don't tell a woman she looks tired first thing in the morning! Are you insane?!â She yelps, shaking her head at him.
Megumi greets you with a small side hug (a huge step since he had only just gotten used to smiling at you and waving very faintly when you were around).
You muster a smile, letting out a breath before checking your phone. This was humiliatingâŚyou're sitting here hoping he texted or calledâŚ
Yet, your phone is drier than a peanut butter slathered popeyes biscuit.
You suck it up, though, putting on a smile for the students.Â
âYou guys heading back out today?â You ask, getting a rundown from Megumi about where they were headed for the day.Â
You wish them luck and are surprise when all three of them give you some fort of goodbye. Nobara and Megumi give you a side hug, but Yuuji fully embraces you, and suddenly you sour mood had brightened.
Inside, the school's AC cools your skin. The summer heat was no joke here, and you're brought back to summer at home.
You can almost smell bbq and hear the slam of dominoes on a wobbly folding table. You wonder if your cousins had put anything together. Something sweet for the kids, maybe? Your great aunt Shirley had a pool you guys would swim in, maybe she finally got it cleaned.Â
âWonder if DeeDee (another cousin) out yet...â You mumble under your breath, picking up papers from your designated âmailboxâ mindlessly flipping through reports and papers from both Jujutsu High and the Government back home.
âWhoâs 'DeeDee'?â Gojo hums, with a slight grin. You only cut your eyes at him, walking away to look at your paperwork elsewhere.Â
âNot in the mood.â You state plainly, only for him to be right next to you, flipping the corners of your papers.Â
Hes pissin you off on purpose.Â
âOuh I'm really scared.â He pokes, grabbing your wrist now to look at your worn and unfiled nailbeds.
You smack your lips trying to tug away but heâs got a damn good grip, smirking at you. It's hard to stay mad and a giggle escapes your lips.Â
âBruh, you bouta piss me off.â You warn, and he's not letting up, snatching your papers from your loosened gripÂ
âStop bruh!â You laugh, reaching for the paper, only for him to hold it above your head.Â
âSeee look at that smile. You never smile at me like that.â He taunts, looking down at you as your face burns up.
It's more of a warm glow than a blush and god does he find it adorable.Â
âYo stopppp!â You laugh, jumping now, the higher he holds it.
âFine,â He grins, moving your hands in his own.Â
The contrast is palpable and somehow, despite his hands being so much larger, they're so...dainty? He gently places the documents back in your hands, grabs his own papers, and walks out of the room.
Yeah, this was weird asf.
You let out a puff of air, trying to recouperate before moving forward with the stack of paperwork in your hand. Yaga had given you one of the many classrooms to work in and keep your thing.
It was nothing special, had a couple of desks and a chalkboard. You hadn't bothered to look around much, just used what you were given or bought at the little Daiso in Harajuku.Â
Your knee deep in reports when the door slides open, revealing the current bane of your existence with a dopey grin on his blindfolded face.
âYo, please not right now.â You sigh, plopping your pen down before pinching the bridge of your nose.Â
âAwee you're so mean! I was coming to help!â He explains, pulling up a desk right in front of yours.Â
âI bet your desk was right next to the teachers..Bad ass kid.â You mutter the last part, scribbling more ont the papers.
There's a stretch of silence and Gojo is leaned back in the desk, the legs of the chair tilting back and forth the longer he fools around.Â
âLast night,â he begins and your pen stops breifly.Â
âNothing happened last night.â You state flatly, shutting it down before the conversation could get serious.Â
âCâmon dont be like that n/n,â He behind, propping his head up with his hands, elbows on the desk.Â
âN/n?â You repeat, shaking your head.
If he was trying to make a nickname for you in hopes of reelign you in and making amendsâŚit was working.Â
âSeriously though,â He begins again, looking at you with a slight frown.
You pause again, this time giving him your undivided attention. It's getting easier to read the expressions under the mask now. A twitch of his nose or the quirk of his upper lip.
 Right now, heâs biting the inside of his cheek and picking paint off the desk. Like looking at you too much. You're quick to turn your attention to the paperwork despite not really paying attention to it at all.Â
Anythign to get your mind off him righ tnow.
âGojo, please. Whatever last night was wonât happen again. I gave you your card, we talked. It can be done.â
âI donât want it to be.âÂ
You look up again, and brown clashes with vibrant blue.
