Head pounding. Mouth dry. Neck sweaty. Muscles weak.
You cracked your eyes open and immediately regretted it, pulling the blanket over your head. âOh godâŠâ
âYou rang?â
You groaned as the voice pierced the air. You risked looking up from your blanket shelter and made out a bleary shape with purple hair. âRaf?â your voice was raspy in your throat.
âIn the flesh,â he sat down on the edge of the bed. âFeeling better?â
âI donât knowâŠwait,â you looked around the room confused. âWhere am I?â
âYou are at my auntâs house. Do you remember anything about last night?â
âLast night? I--â your stomach gave a lurch and you slapped a hand to your mouth. Rafayel was quicker than you and grabbed a garbage can. It was just a dry heave but it still didnât feel good. âKill me.â
âHow about some water instead?â He handed you a cup of water from off the nightstand. âI also have hangover medicine.â
âThanks.â You sipped at the water to wet your mouth and throat then chugged the hangover medicine like it was the elixir of life. âHow did I end up here?â
âWell,â Rafayel said, scooting closer, âI came across you last night while I was out for a walk, you were getting drunk surrounded by luggage since you apparently got evicted from your apartment. And being the selfless amazing friend that I am I singlehandedly brought you and all your stuff back to my auntâs house to sleep it off.â
âOh no.â You buried your head in your hands. You had meant to catch the train back to your fatherâs house last night. What was supposed to be a couple drinks to soften the ache of leaving Linkon turned into getting drunk as the hours slipped by. âItâs starting to come back. I do remember talking to you last night, I think I said a lot of stuff about fries?â
âYep. I then gave you a ride on my back to the cab.â
âShit.â You laid back against the mattress. âIâm so sorry you had to deal with that.â
âDo you remember anything else?â he asked.
You shook your head and hid back under the blanket. âNo. And at this point I feel humiliated enough that I donât want to.â
âSo you donât remember the cab ride or anything after I got you to the house?â
You didnât remember a cab ride but you did vaguely recall getting to the house. You were laying in bed much like you were now and--
Love you
Oh no. Oh damn it all to hell!
You remembered ranting to him about his relationship with Merri and drunkenly confessing to being in love with him. Or did you? Did the words actually leave your mouth or did you just think them? Maybe you said them after he had left. You could definitely remember thinking the words. You tried to press for more details, willed your brain to remember anything more so you could know exactly how terribly you embarrassed yourself last night but nothing was coming to mind.
All you could remember was that you may or may not have said that you loved him. Hopefully if you did say it he would just think you meant in a friendly way and that you werenât actually harboring deeper feelings for him. Yes. It was fine. Nothing to worry about.
âNope. Nothing,â you answered. âDid I say something? Or perhaps do something weird?â You bolted up straight. âPlease say I didnât puke on you!â
Rafayel took in a deep breath and shook his head. âUh no, no puke. Nothing weird eitherâŠyou um, you just really wanted some fries from what I recall.â
Thank goodness for that.
âIâm so sorry for making you take care of me. I promise Iâll be out of your hair soon.â You looked in the corner and saw the crate with your cats in it. They were awake now and meowing for food and freedom. âCan I trouble you for something to feed them? I didnât bring any kibble for them when I was packing my things.â
âIâll bring something over.â Rafayel stood up. âAnd thereâs need for you to rush and leave.â
âIâm already behind, I was planning on catching the train yesterday. I need to rush.â You flung the blanket back but moving quickly made you woozy.
âWhat train?â he asked.
âA train home, back to my familyâs house in the country.â you sighed. âI canât afford to stay in the city so I was going to go home.â
âLeave Linkon? But surely you can find another place to live or something. You donât need to leave the city.â
âIâd love to stay in the city but I was already struggling to pay rent at my last apartment and that was already one of the cheapest ones I could find. Anything even slightly more expensive will be impossible unless I never want free time again.â You looked around for your phone to see when the next train was leaving.
âStay here.â Rafayel plucked the phone out of your hands.
âRaf, I just said--â
âNo, stay with me--I mean, stay here with me and my aunt. We have this spare bedroom, we wonât charge you rent, you can stay here. At least until you get back on your feet.â
This morning was already not going how you wanted it and now the man you had a crush on was telling you to stay in his house where you would see him every day. Thereâd be no way to avoid it. Not him. Not your feelings.
âI canât ask that of you.â
âYou donât need to, Iâm offering. I already told my aunt about you getting evicted and she said it was okay if you stay as long as you need.â Rafayel grew quiet. âUnless thereâs maybe another reason you donât want to stay here.â
You couldnât tell him it was because you had feelings for him and the idea of being around him while he was happily in a relationship with Merri was tearing you apart from the inside out. âIâŠI donât want to be a burden,â you said instead.
âYou wonât be.â
Damn it. Everything inside you was telling you to run. Everything about this was a bad idea but that stupid part of your heart wanted to stay. Now your brain was justifying it however it could. If you stayed here you could find a better job and get better pay and move into a nicer apartment. You wouldnât have to worry your father and brothers by moving back home. Really, it was the best offer you could get and youâd probably be better off if you just accepted. It was all so logical.
Still your mind kept debating what to do.
Itâs a good idea. Itâs a terrible idea! You can be an adult about this. Youâre too immature to handle this! You donât have to leave. You canât stay!
âOkay,â the word fell out of your mouth. âBut Iâll earn my keep. I can clean and stuff, I wonât just freeload off of your auntâs generosity. Iâm sorry for being such an inconvenience to the both of you like this.â
Rafayelâs face brightened and he handed you back your phone. âIâm glad youâre staying, and you really need to learn to accept help when it is offered. Take it easy, Iâll be back for something to feed your little beasts.â
After he left the room you opened the crate to let your cats out to roam. âSorry babies, I know itâs not fun being cooped up all day.â
You downed the rest of the water Rafayel had brought you and fished around in your luggage for a new set of clothes. There wasnât an adjoining bathroom so you had to leave and find one to clean up in. You had been here enough before when you were modeling for Rafayel that finding the bathroom was easy enough. You were planning on just brushing your teeth but after an entire day being out in the hot sun toting all your belongings and getting drunk you decided a shower would suit you better.
It was amazing how much of a difference decent plumbing made. The water stayed hot, the pressure was strong and consistent, there was actually room to move around and you werenât cramped into a short square. You decided when you were apartment hunting one of the musts you were going to look for was a good bathroom.
The shower did help to make you feel like more of a person and the hangover was starting to ebb which was great. After a change of clothes and a quick clean up of the catsâ litter and you were ready to confront the rest of the dayâŠliving at Rafayelâs house.
âWhy did I agree to this?â you muttered to yourself as you left to find some food.
You were hoping maybe scalp some crackers or just something to get in your stomach but found Rafayel already in the kitchen cooking something. âThere you are,â he said. âIâm still making lunch but you can sit and wait if you want a plate.â
âOh okay,â you sat down at the table. The last time you had seen Rafayel cook was when he came by your apartment for the first time. Standing in a nice kitchen such as this with an apron tied around his waist you could have mistaken him for a personal chef. He moved with such fluidity, like every chop of a knife and shake of a pan was part of some intricate dance.
âSo, where is your aunt?â you asked. You had never met her in all the times youâve visited before and had to wonder if she actually did live here or not.
âSheâs at a rehearsal. Sheâll be back in the evening.â He continued chopping.
âI see. Any plans for the day?â You were getting more and more anxious about being in this house alone with him. You needed someone else to cut the awkwardness you were feeling.
âNot a one.â Rafayel shrugged. âYou gonna do anything today?â
âWell, the shift I normally work has been taken over by nepotism, so no.â You still needed to formally quit. It was a shame because you did like that cafe but without proper hours youâd never be able to get a new apartment. âIâll probably spend the day job hunting online for something that pays better.â
âOr, hereâs a wild thought,â Rafayel said, âYou could take a day off and not worry about jobs or money or anything else for that matter. You look like you need a day to yourself.â
âAre you saying I look tired?â
âYes, but also Thomas told me about how you get into funks where you donât talk to people and only work and I think you could use a recovery day so you donât fall back into that rut.â Rafayel gestured for you to come closer, holding out a spoon full of sauce to you. âGive this a taste and tell me what you think.â
You took taste and had to stop yourself from moaning. âDamn that was good!â
âGlad to hear it.â he smiled and went back to stirring.
âYou know, Iâve been meaning to ask you something. How does a god know how to cook so well?â
He chuckled and shook his head. âYou know I wasnât always a god. I have always been in line for consideration but before the elders chose me I was living as any other normal Lemurian. I learned basic life skills and I rather liked cooking so I spent a lot of time in the kitchen learning from the best. Canât you cook?â
âOnly the basics, anything fancier than that and I end up just making a mess.â
âThat would explain why your tastes seem to start and end with cup noodles.â He rolled his eyes. âCome over here.â
âWhy?â
âJust do it, pleaseâ
âOkay,â you stood up and stood next to him. âWhy do you want me here?â
âCooking lesson.â He pushed the cutting board over to you. âFinish chopping these scallions for me.â
âOh no, please donât feel like you have to teach me.â You tried sliding the board back over to him.
âYou said you wanted to earn your keep, right? This is how it is happening. Now get chopping.â He pushed it back to you. âYou do know how to chop a vegetable, do you?â
Your pride flared with indignation. âIâm not a complete idiot, I can chop something just as well as the next guy.â
âGood, then get to it.â he nudged you with his elbow and watched as you took up the knife and started cutting up the scallions.
You could chop veggies just fine but it was nowhere near as smooth or as fast as Rafayel had been doing it. How did people do this so fast without accidentally cutting off a finger?
âCan I give you a pointer?â Rafayel asked, slipping the knife from your hand. âWhen chopping you donât want to act like a cleaver just banging away slowly at it. You want to kind of rock the blade like this where the blade never lifts completely off the cutting board. And keep your fingers safe by curling the fingers back to secure whatever youâre chopping.â
âOkayâŠâ you took his advice and started chopping again. âI donât really get this motion.â
âLike this,â he placed his hand over yours to demonstrate the move and were encased in that scent of ozone, amber, and orange blossom that he always smelled like. You were barely paying attention to what he was showing you, too aware of the feeling of his hand cupping yours.
âThat feel better?â he asked.
âY-Yeah, I think I got it.â You forced your eyes to stay down on the cutting board.
âSee, not so hard as it looks. And who know, maybe one day youâll get as good as me.â
And the butterflies fluttering up a storm in your stomach all went still. âOh how very humble you are, mister fish face.â
âHey, that is lord fish face to you.â he pointed the spoon at you.
You laughed despite yourself and continued on cooking, with Rafayel showing you some simple tricks and giving you a few pointers. It was an informative lesson but half of what he said went in one ear and out the other since he was so close the entire time.
You thought being around him would have been harder but you were surprised by how quickly you fell back into the familiar repartee. Putting aside your growing feelings you had to admit you missed spending time with him. In a short amount of time he had gone from a stranger to one of your closest friends and cutting him out left a larger hole than you thought it would.
Over lunch you explained more about what had been going on the past couple of weeks leading up to you getting evicted. He listened intently, only really chiming in when you got to the part of actually being evicted by your former landlord and from there he was infuriated on your behalf. Then came the question you had been hoping to avoid.
âIf you were in such dire straits why didnât you come to me? That painting we started still isnât finished and you would have made more than enough to pay your rent.â
Your fork scraped the empty plate before you. âWell, I didnât want to bother you.â
âHow would that be bothering me?â he pressed.
âYou had just gotten into a new relationship, things are actually working out between you two and I know how important finding someone to love is for you so I didnât want to distract you. I also know how new couples are, they get so attached cause theyâre in that honeymoon phase so I figured you wouldnât even notice that I wasnât around as often.â You picked up your dishes and moved over to the sink so he couldnât see the pained expression on your face.
Rafayel, never one to let something go that easily, followed you to the sink, taking whatever clean dishes you had just washed and picking up a towel to dry them. âYou wouldnât have been a distraction and I did notice,â he said. âIâve missed you.â
Donât say that. Please donât say that. It was making an already hard conversation worse.
âIâŠI missed you too.â He had no idea just how much you had missed him and what it meant to be here with him now. There was a war inside you, one that fought to keep the distance as friends cause he was already in a relationship and one that that wanted to betray your friends by letting yourself fall into him completely. And when you looked into those beautiful sunset eyes of his you found the side that wanted him all to yourself pulling winning.
âI should um, I should go finish unpacking.â You took the first step away.
âRight,â he nodded, setting the clean plates on the counter. âYou settle in, let me know if you need anything.â
You rushed back to the guest bedroom and slipped inside. Your cats had wandered out of their crate and were now making themselves well at home inside the room. âDonât get too used to it,â you told them, âWeâre not staying here long.â
Instead of putting your things away you dug out your laptop and pulled up job listings. You needed to get out of this house fast before you ended up doing something stupid.
~~~
Rafayel was fine. Really he was. He had convinced you not to move far away, you were relaxing after a very stressful couple of weeks, and you were even staying in his house where heâd get to see you everyday.
The only problem was that you didnât remember saying you loved him last night and he couldnât yet tell you that he was single and confess that he completely and utterly in love with you. Maybe if you had remembered heâd be able to bypass the whole grace period thing he promised Merri because you would have said it first and everything would have been fine. But no. You got too drunk and didnât remember and now you were going to be living in his house where heâd see you everyday and everyday heâd have to keep his feelings to himself, at least until Merri left for her research trip.
It also just wasnât a good time to be confessing anyway. You were going through a lot at the moment and it would probably be for the best if you werenât also juggling a new relationship. That was if you actually wanted to be with him and your drunken confession wasnât just some mistake that you didnât actually mean.
Just a few days. In a few days Merri would be off on her trip, youâd be more settled, and he could tell you that you are everything heâs ever wanted in life. Easy peasy.
It had been a while since you retired to your room and Rafayel stopped by to see how you were settling in. He gave a gentle knock and heard you tell him to enter.
He expected to see the room more organized but when he came in your luggage was still untouched and you were bent over your laptop. âI thought you were unpacking.â He maneuvered around the large box full of your stuff.
âI will in a bit,â you muttered, eyes glazed over as you stared at the screen.
âWhat are you doing?â he walked around to see what you were looking at and saw you slowly scrolling through job listings. âReally? Didnât I tell you to take today to relax?â
âI still need a job, Raf.â
âNot today you donât.â He took the laptop and snapped it closed.
âRaf! Give it back!â you tried to grab it back from him.
âNope. I told you to relax today and you didnât do that so Iâm confiscating this and ordering you to watch a movie with me instead.â He put the laptop on top of a tall shelf you couldnât easily reach. âLiving room, now. I will be bringing snacks.â
âBut--â
âNope. Itâs been decided. Come on.â he marched over to the door and stood there until you got off the bed with a groan and followed him. You sat down in the living room while he found a number of snacks and brought them out to lay across the coffee table. He did let you pick the movie since he still wasnât sure what movies were good or not and decided to trust your judgement.
You picked a fantasy movie about a star girl falling to earth and a man trying to escort her across a magical land, facing princes and witches and pirates, all while falling in love with said star. You were sitting on opposite sides of the couch, a single cushion of space between the two of you as you watched the harrowing and funny adventure happening on the screen.
Rafayel found himself continuously glancing over at you, watching your reactions to this movie you adored. It had been so long since he had seen you smile or heard you laugh, it was great to experience it all over again.
In the movie the protagonist had just been turned into a mouse by a witch and the star was confessing her feelings to him, unthinking that he understood what she was saying.
Rafayel glanced over once again to see what you were doing and saw that you had a pillow clutched to your chest, a warm, giddy smile plastered on your face. By the tides you were adorable. You had claimed yourself as a hopeless romantic and it was here the Rafayel knew that you had been telling the truth. You really did love love.
~âYou know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves. You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful.â~
You turned to look at Rafayel, either seeking his reaction or wondering why he was watching you instead of the movie. Your eyes locked and he felt his breath catch in his throat.
~âSo yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable, and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and⊠What I'm trying to say, Tristan is... I think I love you.â~
You werenât looking away and neither was he. The scene kept on playing but neither of you were watching, something tenuous and unspoken hanging between the both of you. And for a moment nothing else existed.
~âI never imagined I'd know it for myself. My heart... It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it's trying to escape because it doesn't belong to me anymore. It belongs to you.â~
He swallowed, the space between you may as well have been a chasm because he wasnât touching you. He didnât want you across from him, he wanted you nestled in his arms where you belonged. And maybe, just maybe you wanted to be there too.
~âAnd if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange, no gifts, no goods, no demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.â~
âCutie, I--â
The sound of the front door opening broke the spell and you snapped your heads to front. Rafayel had a fist pressed to his mouth, cursing in his head that he had almost spilled everything in a moment of weakness.
Talia walked inside, adjusting the purse on her shoulder when she caught sight of you and him sitting on the couch, acting like a pair of teenagers that got caught doing something they shouldnât have. âOh hello,â she waved.
âHi auntie,â Rafayel paused the movie.
âHello, miss Tan,â you stood up. âItâs a pleasure to meet you and Rafayel already told me that he told you why Iâm here and I just wanted to say thank you for letting me stay. I swear that I wonât do anything to burden you and will be nothing but respectful while Iâm staying here. Thank you so much.â
âOh my dear girl, think nothing of it.â Talia greeted you with a smile, clasping your hands. âIt is just terrible whatâs happened to you. If my nephew hadnât invited you to stay I would have. Treat this home as your home and do let me know if there is anything I can do to help make you more comfortable.â
âYouâve done more than enough by letting me stay here. Thank you. And I just wanted to say Iâm also a great fan of yours. I havenât had the chance to attend a live show but Iâve watched many recordings.â You were practically vibrating with nervous excited energy.
âThank you. You are just lovely.â She gave you an affectionate kiss on both your cheeks. âYou look like you two were watching something so I wonât bother you. Carry on, and do not be shy in letting me know if you need anything.â
âThank you again. I know I keep saying it but it means a lot to me.â You glanced around the room. âActually, while we have the movie paused Iâm going to go to the bathroom. Be right back.â
You scampered off and Talia turned to Rafayel. When he heard the click of the bathroom door Talia stepped closer with a pitying look. âSo, this is the one you really like. Sheâs adorable, you have good taste.â
âAuntie!â Rafayel groaned, covering his face with his hands.
She chuckled, patting him on the top of his head. âIt looked like I interrupted a moment and I apologize for that. Is the mood completely ruined?â
âDoesnât matter, I canât tell her yet anyway. Too much going on,â he sighed.
âIf you say so. Just remember, there is no perfect moment. Donât drag your feet and miss out on her entirely waiting for it.â She excused herself to her room and a minute later you returned to finish watching the movie.
âOh hey, what did you call me earlier?â you asked when you sat down again. âI thought you were about to say something before your aunt showed up.â
âI uh, I just called you witchy, you know, cause youâre my witch.â He shrugged like it was no big deal. âAnd I donât remember what I was gonna say. It was probably nothing important.â
âIf you say so.â You grabbed the pillow you had been clutching before and clasped it tight to your chest again. Never before did Rafayel think he would be jealous of a pillow.
The moment from before where it felt like everything was going to come bursting out of him had gone but he could still feel the words he hadnât spoken stuck in the back of his throat. Nothing important he had said. What a foolish lie.
I know it's probs just because of the lighting but he looks like he has a rosier complexion in the last two images compared to the first.
It just makes me think about how Sylus has changed since being in a relationship because he's going out in the day more to spend time with MC and as a result getting more sun and it's literally brightening his skin.
I feel like at one point we are going to get a kids banner. And i don't mean like a noncanonical AU or myth banner but a babysitting banner.
It'd ride the same line as the wedding banner where ALL of it is meant to 100% look like a wedding but in canon it's just the metaflux field and they're just reaffirming their love without the actual legal ceremony going on yknow?
In the banner I can totally see MC getting roped into babysitting a friend's kid, or it's a friend of one the LI's that has a kid that needs watched over for the day. So they get to go out and have a fun day with the kid, play with them, impart a life lesson, put them to bed. All that cute domestic stuff. Then of course the kindled moment is where you get the peak pretending to be parents trailer fodder they love to feed us. In another life this is absolutely them with their child kinda deal and the fanbase explodes because we're gonna get canonical dad versions of all the LIs.
the curse continues because my SD card for my tablet that I play LADS on isn't being read for some reason. Since I can't put the app on it I use it to store pictures instead. I went to move some pictures onto it tonight and my tablet is telling me there is no SD card even though I've done nothing. I haven't touched it, opened it, the slot is covered by a plastic and rubber case that my tablet goes in, i haven't dropped my tablet or even put it down forcefully. It's just saying the SD card isn't there.
I've tried taking the card out and putting it back in. Wiping it down gently in case of debris. I restarted my tablet twice. Nothing. It just randomly stopped existing and idk why. fml.
I've been on a real fairy tale kick recently and it is a wonder to me that I have never seen a Snow White AU with Rafayel cause it works so seamlessly with his Abysswalker story!
MC is the princess and Rafayel is the hunter charged to kill her and take her heart. But of course he can't do it so he tells her to run away. Instead of coming across a house with 7 people or something though she unwittingly ends up at Rafayelâs place instead. This works out well for him cause he can be sure to keep her safe there. Then something happens where she is poisoned or cursed and falls into her coma. True love's kiss wakes her up again. Happily ever after!
In a world where all the LIs are into very confident and headstrong women (so valid!) I'm thinking about what they'd be like with a girl on the complete opposite side of the spectrum.
Someone who is shy and not at all confrontational. Maybe she has real bad anxiety so she doesn't like teasing others and gets super flustered when someone teases her. She's not some ultra badass girlbossing her way with quippy comebacks and high energy. She's more of a go with the flow habitual people pleaser that jumps at sudden noises.
I just think it would be really cute! Cause when you are that kind of person (me lowkey) you need that extroverted friend that's gonna tell the waiter you asked for no pickles. And slowly they start to come out of their shell more and as they get more comfortable they start easing up and joking around more but are still relatively shy the majority of the time.
I want to see the guys absolutely floored because their girlfriend got embarrassed for laughing a little too loudly and now she's trying to hide behind her hands and they just think it is the cutest thing ever! Absolutely head over heels in love with their shy/anxious girlfriend!
forgot to mention that my morning started with my dogs freaking out because there was a black bear cub climbing my bird feeder to get to the grape jelly i put out for the orioles.
whose child is this! mama bear come get your kid! he's already gotten into my garbage! I'm not letting him destroy my bird feeder too!
Why couldnât god give you a fucking break?
Too much was going wrong in your life to be fair. For one, you were broke. Two, you had skipped breakfast and were starving as a result. And three, you realized you had feelings for Rafayel only after you had set him up with the most perfect woman in the world.
So there you were, doing some landscaping gig in the hot Linkon summer heat for extra cash because you were already a week late on rent, you were hungry, you were thirsty, and you could barely focus because your mind kept going back to Rafayel.
You knew it was useless pining after a taken man but it just hurt so damn much thinking back on all those moments together and realizing that you were unknowingly falling for him. There he was looking for a friend and you had to go and ruin it by wanting more. He didnât know. All he knew was that you suddenly stopped talking to him. If you were a true friend youâd be able to swallow the pain of seeing him with another girl and be happy for him and support their relationship. But you were selfish.
You wanted him. You wanted to stand by his side as not just his friend but as something more. You wanted him to look at you and only you.
You wondered what it would be like to be his. To embrace him, to hear him say that he desired you in the same way. To kiss him. OhâŠright, you had already kissed him, hadnât you? You could hardly remember it since it happened when you were actively drowning. If you had known that was the only time you were going to have the chance you would have kissed him back.
Did his lips taste of salt just because you were in the sea or would they carry that flavor now still?
You got lost in your own head imagining it all and realized you had dug out the flowerbed far too deep and had to shovel soil back in. You needed to stop thinking about him. Not just because it hurt but it was actively interfering with your work and you were already on thin ice with your landlord. You literally couldnât afford to get distracted and miss out on this payday.
It killed you because you knew if you really needed some quick money you could have sold the painting Rafayel gave you. It would have paid your rent through the rest of the year if you sold it to the right person. But you had considered it over and over and each time you talked yourself into doing it, youâd reach to take it off your wall and stop. Rafayel had given you that painting because you genuinely loved it. To just give it to someone elseâŠ
So on your wall it remained and here you were, sweat running down your back and your mouth dryer than a desert. After you were done here you had another job to get to. Then maybe, just maybe, youâd be able to scrape together just enough to get your landlord off your back.
After landscaping was finished you had just enough time run home for a quick shower and change before you had to rush off again. What you came back to though was not what you wanted to see though. An eviction notice taped to your door.
âNo. No no no no!â you tore the notice off and ran downstairs to find your landlord and knocked rapidly on the door.
The old man answered with a scowl on his face. âFigured itâd be you breaking down my door. Unless you have the money right now you can kiss that apartment goodbye!â
âMr. Baek, please! I am getting it! I will have it for you tomorrow I swear!â you pleaded.
âNo!â he snapped, waving his cane at you. âI am done giving you more time. Youâve been late on rent many times before now and Iâve been gracious but you have proven to be unreliable. Just be glad Iâm giving you the grace of packing up your things first instead of throwing them out myself. I want you out of that apartment first thing tomorrow morning!â
âPlease! I swear there wonât be any more late payments! I will have the money tonight! Just please donât kick me out!â You hated the idea of asking Thomas for money but it was the only way you could see being able to give Mr. Baek the money right now.
âNo!â Mr. Baek snarled, âNow go away before I decide to kick you out tonight.â He hobbled back into his house and slammed the door shut in your crying, sweaty face.
You trudged up to your apartment, eviction notice still crumpled in your fist as you sank to the floor and sobbed. Why! Why was this happening? Why couldnât anything in your life go the way you wanted it?
You didnât pull yourself off the floor until the sun had sank into evening. All the fight in you had vanished and you had just sat there crying and lamenting everything that was wrong with your life to your cats that huddled around you like a wall. You didnât even bother going to your other odd job. You were too emotionally drained from that afternoon to do anything but sulk in your apartment.
What finally got you moving was the sound of your stomach rumbling and the uncomfortable feeling of your dried sweat sticking to your skin. You ran a shower, standing under the spray until the water turned cold and then made some dinner from what you had left in the fridge.
You plopped onto your bed with the cup noodles in hand and sighed. The good thing at least was that you didnât have a lot to pack. None of the furniture in this apartment was yours, the last owner had left it and so it would remain. All you really had was clothes, some decor, cat toys, bed sheets, like three pots and pans, a handful of towels, and your electronics. The biggest thing that was yours was the cat tree but you had no idea how you were going to be able to move that. It was tall and cumbersome and though your cats loved it you knew itâd be more hassle to try and bring it with you.
Where were you even going to go? Thomas was your first thought but he and Solana were busy getting ready for their baby and putting you up would just be more stress that new parents didnât need. You werenât good enough friends with Jamie to ask to stay at their place indefinitely, not that you could since they lived in the university dormitories. You couldnât ask Merri since you were too new of friends and you really couldnât stand the idea of living there even if she was fine with it. What if she had Rafayel over while you were there? What if you had to see them being so perfectly happy and in love right in front of you? Your heart was broken enough without adding that to the fire.
The only option it seemed was to move back home. Youâd have to quit your job at the cafe but that was hardly an issue since you barely had any hours any more.
Youâd find a job back home to help make more money for the family, and at least splitting bills with your dad would make finances easier. Not to mention everything was cheaper out in the country than in the city. You knew your dad would love to have you home and helping out around the house again.
You didnât want to leave the city but it was looking like you had little other choice.
You tossed and turned all night and when morning broke you started packing everything away. You abandoned the pots and pans to the apartment for the next tenant, loaded your cats in a crate just big enough for all three, everything else you were barely able to shove into a large suitcase and backpack.
Mr. Baek had said he wanted you out first thing in the morning but if you knew anything about that man it was that he slept late so his mornings didnât start until noon at the earliest. You double checked you had everything, made a final sweep of the apartment for anything you could have missed, and left by early afternoon.
You had booked a train ticket home but it wasnât until evening when fare was cheaper. You also didnât want to deal with all your luggage in a crowded train.
You werenât sure what to do in the meantime. You tried going to the park for some respite but you were attracting a crowd with your luggage and your crate full of cats. It felt like a million eyes were on you and you couldnât stand it.
By the time the sun was starting to set you had decided to drown your sorrows and took refuge at an outside bar. You pulled up on the plastic chairs and sat down, settling your belongings next to you as a confused employee approached and set down a bottle of water.
âWhatâll you have?â they asked.
You took in a deep breath and checked the time. A few hours before your train still.
You looked back at the employee and shrugged. âAnything strong?â
Rafayel had never needed to break up with anyone before, mainly because he hadnât really dated before. There had been flirtations but nothing serious. He knew ever since he was a child that there was a chance heâd be coming to land to find love so he hadnât concerned himself with anyone else. So it was a strange day when Rafayel found himself looking up articles on how to break up with someone.
He had enjoyed his time with Meredith and he didnât want to hurt her, especially since she was your friend too. He owed her something for making her waste three weeks on a relationship his heart had never been into.
The good news at least being that after he had delivered the news he could find you and confess how he felt. He had tried calling you the night of his revelation but you didnât answer. He wished that you would speak to him, he missed the sound of your voice terribly. Hopefully, after this afternoon, heâd be able to hear it every day.
So it was that Rafayel found himself sitting in a cafe with Merri across from him as he told her he didnât want to go out with her anymore. âI am terribly sorry for wasting your time, Merri.â he said.
Merri blinked at him confused and hurt. âI donât understand. I thought that things were going well between us. We have fun, donât we?â
âWe do and you are great butâŠâ Rafayel took in a deep breath. âI have feelings for someone else.â
âSomeone else?â Merri clutched the drink in her hand tighter. âWho?â
Rafayel hesitated. âYou have to understand that she doesnât know that I like her yet. I do not want this to ruin your friendship with her or make you upset. I donât even know if she will return my feelings but I love her. I have for a long time and I am only sorry that it took so long for me to realize it.â
âOhâŠâ Merri trailed off. âI feel like I should have seen this coming. You talk about her so often and I thought it was just because she had set us up and because all three of us were friends but you--â
âMerri--â
âDo you really love her?â she asked.
Rafayel nodded. âI do.â
Merri sucked in a sharp breath. âBecuase I have such respect for her I want to be gracious and I want to humbly encourage you to go after who you really like but I donât think I can do that just now. I really do like you and after almost a month of dating youâre suddenly breaking up with me for my friend who you donât even know if she likes you too and I just--just--â
Merri was upset, he could tell that much. He had hoped that since their relationship was so short lived she wouldnât have been this upset but she had a softer heart than he expected.
âI know that this isnât good. It isnât fair to you and I am sorry it didnât work out. Maybe in another life where I had met you first things would have been different but you deserve someone who can give you the kind of love and affection you deserve. You are wonderful.â
âI know I am.â Merri said, a hint of pride breaking through the mess of disappointment. âIt doesnât make it hurt less though.â
âI understand.â Rafayel hated this. It was such a sad an awkward conversation. How did humans do this all the time? It seemed exhausting.
Merri looked at him, disappointment and hurt morphing into acceptance. âCan I just ask one favor of you?â
âWhat is it?â
âGive me a grace period.â
âWhatâs a grace period?â Rafayel hadnât come across this in his breakup research.
âItâs an amount of time where you stay single after getting out of a relationship. Knowing you Iâd bet anything you were hoping to run off and confess your feelings immediately after this but all I am asking is to give me the dignity of waiting a couple days before you two get together.â
Was this some kind of human custom? Why did he have to wait? Would you find it rude if he confessed right after breaking up with your friend? Maybe you would. Damn it.
âHow long do you suggest I wait?â Rafayel asked.
âWell, before you dumped me I was going to tell you about this research trip I had been invited to go on next week. I will be in the middle of the ocean for a month. If you can give me the mercy of waiting to get together until after I am gone and I donât need to witness you both being in love it would be greatly appreciated. Itâll also be nice since the work will be a welcome distraction from another relationship down the toilet.â Merri sighed. âCan you just give me a few days?â
Just a few days. Less than a week. Rafayel could do that. Right?
âDeal.â Rafayel answered with reluctance. âAnd again, I am sorry.â
Merri nodded, standing up. âTreat her right, sheâs sweet and she deserves someone just as kind.â
Merri left and Rafayel sat for a long while at that table watching the ice melt in his glass. What a mess. Maybe it was for the best. You were still avoiding him so your first interaction after weeks of being ignored should probably be less intense than him admitting his deepest love for you. That kind of confession would probably scare you off after weeks of silence. Best to take it slow. That still meant that he had to find you and get you talking to him again.
It was late evening now and Rafayel was taking a walk around the city trying to clear his head. Since texting and calling was getting him nowhere maybe he needed to do the rude thing and show up at your house. As terrible as the idea of walking into your den of feline monsters was, not seeing you at all was even worse.
Hopefully you werenât working or sleeping or--
Rafayel stopped, his eye catching a familiar figure slumped over a small outside table. There was no way that was you. His eyes were playing tricks on him.
As he got closer though, sure enough, he saw that it was you barely clinging to consciousness. Next to you was some bags and a cage with your three little monsters inside.
âHey, hey wake up,â he nudged your arm, âWake up, witchy.â
Your eyes cracked open, haziness dissipating into a glare. âFishy?â
Rafayel rolled his eyes. âYeah, itâs your fishy. I was walking by and I saw you laying here. What are you doing?â
âOh, so now--now you wanna see me!â your speech was slurred and heavy as you pushed yourself up to your elbows and continued to shoot him daggers.
âWhat are you--Iâve been wanting to see you for weeks! Youâre the one thatâs been avoiding me.â
âUh huh, sure,â you peered into your empty cup and frowned. âToo busy making out with--with perfect little Mary Beth.â
âMeredith, and we havenât been making out--nevermind--what are you doing?â
âIâm having a drink before I go.â you reached for the bottle to refill your glass and protested when Rafayel took it away from you.
âAre you drunk right now?â
â...noâŠâ you pouted, turning away from him.
âBy the tides, you are.â He sighed, putting the nearly empty bottle on an empty table. âIsnât it dangerous for a pretty girl like you to be getting drunk alone? What if someone took advantage of you?â Just the idea was enough to make him feel violently ill. âCome on, Iâll take you home--â
âNo! I want fries!â you pointed at the sign advertising fries behind him. âDo I have money for fries? Fy money. Yummy golden fry money.â You tried reaching for your bag and slipped off your chair.
âHey! Watch it!â Rafayel caught you. âWhat is going on with you? Why are you getting drunk and whatâs with the bags?â
You slumped back into your seat, fiddling with your empty cup again. âI got evac--evacuated.â you stuttered.
âEvacuated? From your apartment?â
You nodded. âYup.â
âWhy? Was there an emergency?â
âNo moneyâŠâ your eyes were growing heavy again.
âNo money?â Rafayelâs brows drew together before he realized what you were actually trying to say. âWait! Did you mean to say you got evicted?â He gave you a small shake.
Your eyes went wide and then you pitched forward, hurling all over his shoes. âSon of a--â
He kicked the vomit off his shoes and straightened you up, grabbing a napkin and wiping your mouth clean. âThatâs it, youâre coming with me.â
He called for a cab but you werenât near the road so he had to haul you onto his back, grab your bags, carefully balance your crate of monsters on your rolling luggage, and trudge to the nearest road for pickup. The driver wasnât too keen on having the cats in the car but Rafayel offered him a generous tip and suddenly he was helping load luggage.
When you made it back to his auntâs house the driver helped him unload everything again and then it was the same balancing act as before. âYou are so lucky my aunt is doing a show tonight. I wonât have to answer any of her questions until tomorrow.â
âRafâŠâ you stirred to waking as Rafayel carried you into the house.
âYeah, Iâm here,â he kicked open the door to the spare bedroom. He set you down on the bed. âThere, thatâs better than a table huh?â
âRaf,â your hand caught his when he tried to turn around to hit the lights. âDonât goâŠâ
âIâm not going anywhere,â He knelt by your side. âSee, Iâm right here.â
Your gaze was unfocused yet your eyes continued to sparkle in the pale moonlight. Even in your inebriated state you were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. He reached to tug off your shoes and scooted you up on the bed. âLetâs get you comfortable, here, under the covers.â
âRaf,â your voice was quiet. âDo you love her?â
âLove who?â he asked.
âMary Beth.â you grumbled.
He almost laughed. âNo, cutie, I donât love Meredith.â
âGood,â you snuggled deeper into the bed, âcause I doâŠâ
âYou love Meredith?â
âLove youâŠâ you mumbled, eyes falling closed.
His heart was in his throat, hand hovering over you like he was afraid to touch you lest you turn out to be a hallucination. But your hand was still holding his. You were real. You were here. And you loved him.
âI love you too, my little witch,â he whispered. âAnd I am really hoping you remember that in the morning.â
He placed a gentle kiss to your forehead, your breathing already falling into a deep cadence of sleep.
I am soooooo deep into a Xavier fairy tale au era rn. I just want to put that boy into every fairy tale with a prince charming that I can. Sleeping Beauty. Cinderella. Snow White. Rapunzel. Swan Lake.
Oooooooooohhhhhh!!!! Giselle would be a cool tragedy! Reader would be Giselle and Xavier would be Albrecht who despite being engaged to MC (aka Bathilde) falls in love with peasant girl Reader. But after learning that he's a nobleman and engaged and that they couldn't truly be together she goes mad and dies from her weak heart. Just to then get resurrected as a spirit along with other spirits that were betrayed by their lovers (the Wilis) and get revenge by killing the men that come through their forest. But when the spirits target Xavier she saves him and by saving him she also saves herself from becoming a Wili too and it ends bittersweetly.
GAAAASP! A Midsummer Night's Dream!!!! Where it's like MC and Reader are the Hermia & Helena equivalents. And like Xavier and one of the other LIs are Demetrius and Lysander and are running around being the victims of fairy hijinks. Like MC is Hermia and both Xavier and the 2nd LI are in love with her while Reader is Helena and is pining after Xavier. Then the 2nd LI and Xavier get blasted with fairy magic that makes both of them fall in love with Reader. So there's just a brief period of time where both boys are obsessing over her and she just thinks they're mocking her and is beating them back with a stick until the magic gets removed from the 2nd LI and all live happily ever after.
Just remembered this book i DNFd last year cause the female lead was real dumb. She was the daughter of a mafia boss, a computer whiz like ultimate hacker level genius, and she was supposed to be this sexy badass right? And this is the moment when I realized I wasn't finishing this book:
Scene: a late night rendezvous with the heir of another highly dangerous mafia family
FL's actual inner monologue: I should wear something that can easily blend in with the shadows and wear good running shoes in case i need to make a quick escape
What FL wore to the HIGHLY DANGEROUS secret rendezvous where she KNOWS she might get caught in a SHOOT OUT!: Jeans. Bright yellow blouse. Ballet flats.
bruh. let me just wear the brightest freaking color i can and ballet flats! Which are basically one step away from being flip flops! Dumbass!!
We discussed the issues describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of âSo, if foodâs not an option, what can I use?â Well, I was just getting to that!
This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions weâve received on this topic.
Describing charactersâ skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though itâs not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.
Complex Colors
These are more rarely used words that actually âmeanâ their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so youâll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.
Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.
For example: Golden brown, russet brown, tawny beigeâŠ
As some of these are on the ârareâ side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.
âHe was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.â
Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:
âHis skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.â
Modifiers
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word.The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.
Dark - Deep - Rich - Cool
Warm - Medium - Tan
Fair - Light - Pale
Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pinkâŠ
If youâre looking to get more specific than âbrown,â modifiers narrow down shade further.
Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.
As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.
While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like âtanâ âfairâ and âlightâ do work alone; just note that tan is less likely to be taken for ânaturally tanâ and much more likely a tanned White person.
Calling someone âdarkâ as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)
Undertones
Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isnât just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.
Mentioning the undertones within a characterâs skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.
As shown, thereâs a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).
âA dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.â
âHe always looked as if heâd ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.â
Standard Description Passage
âFarahâs skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summerâs sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.â
-From my story âWhere Summer Endsâ featured in Strange Little Girls
Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.
Note my use of âfawnâ in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, itâs also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.
Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time Iâm no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.
Creative Description
Whether compared to night-cast rivers or dayâs first lightâŠI actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.
Iâve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their âsmooth rose-tinged ivory skinâ, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.
Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where.
Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if theyâre not even a secondary character.
Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight creative. But again, do whatâs good for your tale.
Now before you run off to compare your heroineâs skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.
When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.
So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.
Also consider whose perspective youâre describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who canât stand the person.
âHer face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.â
âShe had a sandy complexion, smooth and tawny.â
Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.
Flowers
Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose
It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didnât have a 20 character name or wasnât called something like âchocolate silkâ so these are the finalists.Â
Youâll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.
Also be aware of flowers that most mightâve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.
âHe entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?â
These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because Iâve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.
At least theyâre common enough that most may have an idea what youâre talking about at the mention of âpinecone.âÂ
I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how itâll sounds.
"Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.â
I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.
I donât suggest using a comparison just âcuz you canâ but actually being thoughtful about what youâre comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.
Wood
Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash
Wood can be an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having âfoodyâ terminology within their names, but again, associations.
Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure itâs appropriate to the character if you do use it.
âThe old warlockâs skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.â
These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.
If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually âfitsâ the book or scene.
Even if youâre able to get us to picture what ârutileâ looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.
âHis skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.âÂ
Physical Description
Physical character description can be more than skin tone.
Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, handsâŠbody posture, body shape, skin texture⊠though not necessarily all of those nor at once.
Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as afro hair to a Black character.
How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldnât overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspotsâŠ
General Tips
Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.
Get Creative On Your Own:Â Obviously, I couldnât cover every proper color or comparison in which has been âapprovedâ to use for your charactersâ skin color, so itâs up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.
Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isnât always enough to indicate someoneâs ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to âdark whiteâ or something, more indicators of race may be needed.
Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your white characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you donât, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the âOtherâ).
PSA: Donât use âColored.â Based on some asks weâve received using this word, Iâd like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color âcoloredâ please.Â
Not Sure Where to Start? You really canât go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. Itâs actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.
