hot take possibly? but i actually think it’s okay for things to be marketed for adults. it’s literally okay if things aren’t suitable for children. i feel like we are losing the plot

I actually find it extraordinarily weird that we keep trying to baby-proof every element of life for children until the magical age of 18, at which point some switch turns and a man can finally pounce on a girl who, if some of these people had their way, would never have heard the word sex before. Also, they'll be expected to pay taxes and contend with an extremely harsh reality that will likely bitch slap them until several major depressive disorders.

What makes this even worse is that when an 18-year-old raised in the way described above is unprepared for adult life, people will argue that it means we should have kept them in the walled garden for longer. This is completely backwards. You can’t build a functioning adult in a day no matter how old they are! Responsibility and decision-making are skills and the only way to get better at them is by practice. Autonomy and responsibilities should be gradually ramped up through the teen years instead of setting kids up for failure by expecting them to go 0 to 60 as it were.

cannot get over that even if they get to yell at or otherwise take the higher ground with robby (re: samira’s dick comment, victoria’s side eye, cassie’s polite correcting about the tiktoks), the women always have to also thank him and/or apologize to him. samira has to apologize in the season finale. baran had to tell him the week before that she appreciated his dressing down the paramedics. again the writers want it both ways because they’re afraid of their hero going full unlikeable but as a result their narrative reeks of being built on misogyny and the audience has picked up on it!

also i think that samira teaches whitaker something insanely important that robby never would be able to teach, which is that his idea of what a drug-seeking patient "looks like" is completely inaccurate and rooted in racism. the show doesn't outright say it, but whitaker's suspicion of joyce requesting pain meds was rooted in anti-black bias!!! samira is (as far as we're told) the ONLY doctor in the er who is specifically researching this niche of medical racism and prioritizing the care of the people who are most affected by it. but the showrunners were like nah, we'll write off our only doctor who talks about being anti-racist and initiates conversations about racial bias.... which could mean nothing
