rhinestone cowboy - human!ken x fem!reader
summary: after travelling to the real world to find himself, ken ends up joining the travelling carnival as a rodeo clown/stable boy. he definitely wasn't attracted to the carnival at first because of the horses. no way. and he definitely doesn't decide to stick around because of you...A horse rider/trainer/performer that is quite simply the most beautiful thing he's ever seen. nope. definitely not.
tags: no tags. only vibes. and fluff.

Ken stood off to the side of the arena, adjusting his costume and ignoring the heckling kids behind him. The handlers would be releasing the bulls any second now, as was part of your routine. Any second, he would have to go back out into the dirt and trampled grass as a sparkling distraction in case a bull got too close. But for now, he got to watch you.
You raced around the arena floor on horseback. Gracefully, you guided your buckskin mare, Peaches, to jump over obstacles, strut backwards, and dance on two legs while you somehow held on to the saddle. Ken held his breath as he watched you take Peaches out to the edge of the floor and bring her up to top speed. This was his least favorite part of your routine. But it was always a crowd favorite. No matter what anyone said, you wouldn't give up the trick. You let the reins go and slowly climbed up onto the saddle. Once your balance was stable, you raised your hands and beamed up at the crowd as Peaches did one lap around the floor.
Ken grabbed the metal hoops that had been leaning against the railing. Then, at the exact right moment, he threw them to you as you flew by. The crowd burst into murmurs and cheers as you began to juggle the rings.
You looked so confident up on that saddle, like you were born to be there. Grinning and laughing as the wind picked up your hair and dirt flew into your face. Skin radiant under the blinking lights of the Ferris wheel and makeshift spotlights of the arena. You looked beautiful.
Off to the side, the metal gate of the arena floor clanged. When Ken looked over, he could see the bull that was supposed to be used in the next act getting anxious. The handlers were trying to calm him down, but it was no use. He bucked against the metal bars holding him in place, against the hands that tried to hold him down. One moment, there was just the usual commotion of handlers yelling at one another and a bull's angry grunt. Next, the gate was wide open, and the anxious bull was sprinting into the arena.
In the middle of your act. With you still standing on the saddle. You flinched when you heard the metal clang against each other and the crowd gasp, then you looked over your shoulder and saw the bull. Stamping its feet into the dirt and looking for something to be mad at. It was that slight off-centering of your balance that threw you from the saddle.
You landed in the dirt with a sickening thud, flat on your back, the wind knocked from your lungs. You gasped for air as you stared up at the stars.
Ken didn't think; he just moved. Shouting your name, he bolted across the arena floor until he was between you and the bull.
"Hey, pal, it's not your act yet! Stop stealing the spotlight!" he called to the bull as he moved this way and that, trying to keep its attention away from you as you struggled to get up.
A few members of the audience laughed. People were still in the stands?
The bull groaned as it stamped the ground, horns lowered in Ken's direction. Then it charged. Full speed. A one-ton bullet. Ken shrieked as he ran away, making a direct line away from you, as the bull went after him instead. He ducked out of the way at the last second, and the crowd oohed at his ability. The bull was distracted for the moment, and in that moment, Ken looked back at you. On your hands and knees, crawling towards the fence slowly.
Oh, God. You were hurt.
Ken ran as fast as he could while the bull wasn't looking and helped you to your feet. You wheezed as he scooped you up by the armpits and then looped one of your arms around his shoulders. Within a few steps, you were at the fence.
"Come on, you gotta go," he told you quietly as he grabbed you by the hips and popped you up onto the fence.
You swung your legs over and landed on the other side roughly. "What about you?"
"Don't worry about me." He gave you a wink and a smile he didn't feel confident in but hoped you did. "I got this."
His next girlish scream as he ran away from the bull said otherwise. But before you could see if he got the bull back into its pen, the medical team was at your side and whisking you away to their tent.
At midnight, the rides were shut down. The last of the patrons were shuffled away from the carnival grounds. The animals were in their stables for the night. Family dinner was done and cleaned up. The carnival was ready to pack up and do it all over again in the next town.
And you were sitting in your trailer, one ice pack on your head and another on your aching ribs. Nothing was broken, thank goodness. You couldn't afford a trip to the hospital. But a concussion and bruised ribs were enough to have your act shut down for the next two weeks. Of course, you grumbled and groaned to Luke, the carnival's showrunner, but he wasn't going to hear a word about it. He wanted his people safe.
Really, you couldn't argue against that. Luke was a good boss. Fair. Thought of his employees like family. It was just that...Without riding and performing, you didn't quite feel like yourself.
As you were about to drift off in your recliner, there was a knock at your trailer door. Probably Luke coming to check on you one last time. You groaned as you got to your feet, but you were slightly taken aback when you opened the door and Ken stood on the other side. Twisting a single wildflower between his forefinger and thumb and focusing anywhere but on your face.
"Hey, Ken," you greeted as you leaned against the doorframe.
"H-Hey," he replied, then cleared his throat. "Just wanted to make sure you were okay."
"Oh. Thank you."
He finally looked up into your eyes and for the first time...You realized he was attractive. Maybe it was the fact that he wasn't painted like a clown just now. But he wasn't just carnival junky attractive but...Beautiful. Bright blue eyes like ice in winter. Sharp jaw - sharp everything. That platinum blond hair you were pretty sure he got from a box, but the dye job looked too good to be done in a trailer bathroom. He looked up at you now, bathed in light from your open trailer door, with such genuine care in his eyes that it felt like hitting the dirt all over again. The air knocked from your lungs.
Ken had been with the carnival for about a year. You were friends, of course; he worked with the rodeo unit. You were a tight knight group. And Ken fit in so easily. Sure, he was a little odd sometimes - somehow completely unaware how the world worked in some aspects. But he was kind. Giving. A good friend. You always sat together during family dinner and often wound up riding in the same vehicle during travel days.
But this was the first time you thought of him in...This way. A more-than-friends way. And maybe it was because he saved your life earlier. Maybe it was because he was now arguably the cutest guy in the carnival. But you weren't mad about it.
"Are...You doing okay?" he questioned, then shook his head. "But, if you don't wanna tell me, that's fine. I'm cool. I'm super cool. Totally...Didn't pick this flower on the way here. I've just had this."
With a smile, you stepped down from your trailer and shut the door behind you. "It's fine. I'm okay. Concussion - bruised ribs. Nothing I can't handle."
"Okay. Good. Good. Not that those things are good. Those...Bad." Ken shifted his weight from one foot to the other.
"Those fine," you chuckled, "Thank you, by the way. For saving me."
"Oh, geez, that was...That was nothing. Just my job."
"Still." In a bold moment, you popped up onto your toes and planted a quick kiss on his cheek. "Thanks, Ken. I appreciate it."
The kiss left him a babbling, blushing, grinning mess after that. Mouth opening and closing like a fish. Eyes wide. Cheeks the color of cherry cotton candy. You giggled as you plucked the wildflower from his grip and brought it up to smell.
"You wanna come inside...Maybe?" you asked as you looked up at him from beneath your lashes.
He was nodding before he finally pushed out, "Yeah. Yeah. That sounds good."
