yall. this isn’t a joke. if i can tell a 5 yr old “my dog is working, please let her be” and they understand then you can too. those dogs ARE working. they have a job to do. and when we say ‘leave them alone’ that includes making faces at them and baby talking them. literally act like they are just someone’s bag or something. if you distract them they could fail to alert their owner to a seizure or blood sugar issue or allergen. you are literally jeopardizing someone’s life bc you can’t have basic decency, respect, and self control.

Here, if you want a comparison that isn’t an object: I worked as a caregiver for people with developmental (usually accompanied by physical) disabilities. My job was to accompany them into the community for various activities including shopping, dining, and leisure activities. And everywhere we went people would come up to ME and tell me what a good person I was, what a great service I was providing, god bless me, etc. Not only was it embarrassing for both me and my consumers, it was distracting! I was supposed to be paying attention to my consumers and their needs, which could often change rapidly depending on their conditions, and instead I was having to deal with some prick who felt the need to voice what a martyr I was for doing my job. And they’d usually get angry if I ignored them or informed them they were distracting me from my job, which sounds familiar.

So yeah. Leave. The Dog. Alone. All you’re doing is making yourself feel good while distracting the dog from its job and endangering the person it’s supposed to be helping.

Take seeing eye dogs, for example- would you walk up to a seeing person and say “Wow! Nice eyes! They sure are doing a great job seeing for you! I bet you can really get places without bumping into things! Awesome job!” Of course you wouldn’t, that’s super weird. So why would you do that with somebody’s service dog that they rely on just as much?

So I used to have a Russian friend who had a pretty thick accent and like a lot of Russians tended to eschew articles. She would say things like “Get in car.” And stuff.

Well one day this asshole who had been kind of tagging along with us asks her why she talks like that because it makes her sound dumb and I still remember her response word for word.

“Me? Dumb? Maybe in America you have to say get in THE car because you are so stupid that people might just get in random car, but in Russia we don’t need to say that. We just fucking know because we are not stupid.”

One time I was proof reading a paper for a Russian student. As I was correcting her paper with her, the many mistakes in her grammar started weighing on her. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, almost sobbing,

“In Russian I am so intelligent and clear. In English I am like [an] idiot”

They’re speaking your language because you don’t know theirs. That’s not something they should be made fun of, it’s something that should be commended because learning a language is hard fucking work.

If your school has blocked this I recommend using ‘InteractiveFics’. Its originally used for changing Y/N to your own name but it has a separate option where you can change any word/name to what you want.

It has a less likely chance of being blocked so I thought I’d mention it.

a great piece of writing advice i’ve heard, if not one of the greatest, is that you should always write what your characters would say, not what you want them to say.

this might sound confusing to some people, given that you’re the writer, and you provide your characters with a voice (they wouldn’t exist without you) but writing what your characters would say/do, as opposed to what you want them to say/do, really just comes down to what you want to happen in your story, and what realistically would happen.

as in, you might want one of your characters to be open about their feelings, and to trust the person standing in front of them. but your character has trust issues, and they don’t easily open up to people. forcing this character to do so anyway, will only lead to inauthentic storytelling, and characters that continuously contradicts themselves.

let your characters guide you through their lives, and let the story unfold itself. you won’t always have control over what happens.

characters will face the consequences of their actions, one thing will lead to another, and the story will turn in a direction so far from the one you initially meant for it to go in. let that happen. don’t force a story in there if it doesn’t go with the current narrative.

The great thing about this is once you start treating your characters as real, complex people and not as plot devices to get from A to B, writing in general becomes a whole lot easier. You're not stuck on the "What should happen in this scene?" aspect, because you know these characters well. You know their goals, their fears, their misbeliefs. You create the premise and they react to it, and then they react to that reaction, and so forth. You get to a point where you almost don't have to think when you write dialogue, because you can practically hear them talking in your mind. And that's a brilliant feeling :)

i found this documentary on youtube about africa’s great civilizations throughout history and it’s really good and chock full of info dispelling harmful myths and preconceptions about african societies, the first part is 2 ½ hrs long and the second part is another 2 ½ hours so there’s a solid 5 hours of content here completely for free and most of the scholars in the documentary are black african scholars and academics speaking about their own people’s history

The Western countries that have spent two decades fucking up Afghanistan have a duty of fucking care to the civilians left behind.

Breaking news as of 16 August 2021 is that the Afghan president and all other government officials have fled Kabul. The "last stronghold" that was predicted to "hold out against the Taliban for three months" has fallen within a week, and most civilians in that city and others that have been overrun are now fearing for their lives.

We have a basic moral obligation to help them in any way possible. That includes taking unreserved numbers of refugees that are refugees in large part due to the actions of the "heroic west."

I made this post over a year ago now and inevitably whenever it gains more traction someone will pop up completely misunderstanding me, not understanding that I’d just like to be comfortable. I don’t actually want advice on how to acquire mugs. I own a couple of mugs. I’d just like to be able to have some security. Maybe a pool. Maybe I’d like to own a small amount of property. A condo, maybe. I’d like to be able to travel. You’ll notice that nobody here is giving advice on how to acquire a condo or a vacation. They’re just taking the mug part seriously. All I wanted to do was fantasize about a world where I don’t live in a studio apartment that takes up half of my paycheck in rent alone and maybe I have a stupid white dad device mounted on the wall to showcase my mug collection. Can everyone just shut the hell up about telling me how to acquire mugs? I don’t care about the traps of consumerism! I just wanna be able to afford to visit my aunts sometimes!
