You know, an undernoticed thing i find in Hazbin is how its hinted the Vees seem to eat really badly?
Like, every time them eating is brought up, its either eating at a resteraunt or getting takeout. Vox mentions in that Val drawing video how they've gotten Mexican food THREE TIMES in one week and they're ordering food AGAIN making it they've done so. In the pilot era, there's all the art of Vox and Valentino going to a burger place and eating there, Vox mentions him and Velvette going to a resteraunt for lunch in season two. It really seems like the Vees don't usually eat food cooked at their place, which is...weird to me. Like, you think the Vees would be the type of rich to have a huge team of chefs on staff or something that'd make them whatever they want. But even the soup kitchen they make in episode 1 of season two looks awful despite them probably having people who could cook and set that up. I don't know, its just weird to notice how terrible the Vees diet is.

some of my favorite underrated moments from the phm deleted scenes:
grace inadvertently pushing the button to bring out the other two beds with his butt, immediately after ripping the catheter out of his rectum
"please do not share the food paste with the medical arm" cut to armando using a polite little handkerchief to wipe its "face"
grace pulling the wrong toilet flush and getting his head vacuum-sucked into the centrifugal-oriented one (also thank you phm deleted scenes for the only other angle of the bathroom we will probably ever get <3)
"wHY IS IT IN RUSSiaN???"
idk if the guys in the spacesuit tutorial video are some of the props crew, but if they are then i'm glad they got to show off their creation and have fun/be silly about it
"goodnight grace" "goodnight rocky" "goodnight armando" "goodnight john boy" "goodnight jim bob" "good night mary ellen" etc etc
"rockyyyyyyyy. it's time to go to sleep!" "okay you start!" "i'm trying" "try harder"
just... the whole sleepover scene. these two i stg!!! four fucking years of this shit. i just know grace and rocky achieved levels of co-dependent friendship previously thought unattainable
the original *shake head slowing becoming a nod* that the later post-rocky-wake-up scene calls back to
"maybe we're cousins" "wOAAUUGGGHHH!"
grace doesnt look even vaguely surprised when rocky whips out the split arm tongue thingy. they probably spent the entire trip to adrian just showing off weird body parts to each other
Yāknow how some schools do a teachers vs students kickball game during the last week of class before finals? Yeah i think Ryland Grace goes fucking crazy during that. The UNESCO rumors get overshadowed by the time weather moved their game into the gymnasium, where Mr Grace punted the ball with so much fucking force that it took out one of the ceiling lights

Book Grace: This is all so cool! I am the first person to make contact with an alien. And then kill said alien. And then breed said alien. And then make contact with another intelligent alien species. And we can communicate. And we are working together! And I know its the end of the world and this probably isn't the time to be nerding out but, dang it! This is cool!! I just really love science!!!
Movie Grace: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! EVERYTHING IS TRYING TO KILL ME! I'M GOING TO DIE! Okay never mind. This alien guy is chill. Also I just really love science!!!
grace explaining dreams in fanfic: yeah we donāt really know why humans do it but itās essentially our brains processing memories and emotions during sleep
grace in the actual fucking movie: itās like another life that you live... where crazy stuff happens... but it all makes sense
Thinking about a form of natural selection in Hell, and what it tells us about winners.
Is it possible that a lot of sinners in Hell are naturally more powerful than winners in Heaven, purely because of the idea of the survival of the fittest? And what does that mean when we look at winners?
Pictured: My (not so) inner dinosaur nerd is loving the pterodactyl sinner here.
Also, cheers for letting me reach 50 followers! Let's see if I can keep them. But seriously, thanks for joining me. So, my 50 little friends! Got a long train journey, need to fall asleep or simply need something to read on the loo? I've got you - ramble under the cut!
Hell is Other People
In Heaven, there's no competition. No one has to use any powers they have to survive, so the weaker powers and the people who wield them are still around. There are no challenges in Heaven, and while powers exist - like flight - there doesn't appear to be much need for them.
But in Hell, if your powers can't defend you, you're unlikely to get anywhere - just forced to continually reform, or end up inevitably at the end of an Exorcist's blade.
And sure, reforming isnāt the same as permadeath. But youāre bound to keep a low profile and scurry around if you donāt have what it takes, given itās Hell and what people could do to you here. Itās a form of social death, if anything. We have seen sinners literally set themselves on fire rather than be on the same street as an Overlord. You might as well be dead, in that your options are probably very, very limited, if you donāt have powers that can do something to protect you.
(Actually, it's probably the best punishment of all for the sinners of the very worst type. To be helpless among people just like them.)
So Iām wondering - yes, new sinners are coming down all the time, adding to the overpopulation. But the ones we see having a semi-normal existence? They must be ones that have powers, abilities or skills to keep everyone else at least a little at bay. And if they donāt, they have to use other means to get by, like Angel Dust.
Winners, though? Look at how helpless they are.
I've written about Heaven before in these two posts, and commented on the general blandness of their existence, how their lives are arranged like that of a pet whose owner didn't quite look them up well enough - like a hamster being given skiing equipment, or a snake being shown the finer points of watercolours, in the name of 'enrichment for their enclosure.' It's a very slapdash attempt to entertain humans, and it seems to speak of a general lack of idea as to what humans want and what would make their afterlives meaningful. It's angels looking at each other and going, "I...guess? They seem happy?"
So winners are perpetually trapped in a forever childhood full of ball-pits and sugar/confectionery stalls - an empty-headed existence that takes the people who have supposedly done such good things in life and reduces them down to being childlike and dependent on others.
It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't have powers at all.
Either way, when Vox speaks to Heaven, none of the winners react with the drive of people who have faced overwhelming odds in life, who fought for others, who gave everything to do the right thing - as presumably they did to get there in the first place. Instead, they blindly panic, crying out for help from angels who are just as lost as they are. What a comedown that is.
Just as Hell encourages people's worst traits, Heaven seems to encourage complacency, to take those sharp edges of people that let them do good things as well as bad and soften them.
And this made me think about winners as a whole, in comparison to the sinners we know so well. How much of that oddness around the winners' lives is down to them, or down to their environment?
What Makes a Winner?
Let's look at the winners, shall we? They seem to come in one of two - no, three - flavours. They're cute and cuddly, which in itself is dehumanising, bland, or they're oddly abstract.
Maybe 'bland' seems nasty. Let me be clear, I think that's actually pretty important and I'm not bitching about the animation here.
With Hell's sinners, there's a lot of visual clues to how they ended up where they did. They are tied down to a time period, have markers of their profession, or how they died, or simply make us wonder what their great sin was. At the very least, their designs are very striking.
With Heaven's winners, there seems to be a distinct 'otherness' to them - they seem rarely tied down to a time period in the same way, and seem distant, with their life stories rarely easily identifiable.
For example, our fox-butterfly friend in the image above - what did they do to get to Heaven?
(Yes, I know there's a Horus-inspired sinner behind them, who is pretty Ancient Egyptian coded. But he's the exception that proves the rule.)
What did any of this odd, unreadable collection of winners do, if you look at them individually? Where did they live? When did they die? What was their great moment of divine grace?
It's difficult for us to make these assumptions when the only winner we know is Sir Pentious - who hardly came there by normal means.
I think there's something really interesting here (as I always say, I know: it's my version of the angry gf, I just think it's funny how...) about the nature of goodness. How goodness, of the kind that Heaven seems to champion (which, notably, no one seems to be able to define for certain), is harder to understand, harder still to predict, and even harder still to guess at. It's quite different from the simple banality of evil, the predictability of evil.
(Ursula K. LeGuin, goddess that she is/was, spoke about the banality of evil if youāre interested in that.)
When we look at a winner, we can't quite tell why they're there, what choices got them here, and why their forms are the way they are. The better they are, the less human they appear to be and the less relatable they are.
(If you're still on the loo at this point, by the way, I'd consider consulting your doctor.)
Because in many ways, evil, and doing evil, is simple. It doesn't take much effort. But working out the right thing to do, especially when there's a lot of bad options, is complicated. Minimising human suffering, or any suffering, requires nuance and compassion. You have to deny a lot of base ideas about yourself and your own survival in favour of others.
No wonder they don't know what to do with Vox's threats. It's been a long time since they've ever had to think about concerns like danger.
So while the sinners are easily identifiable, and have that 'survival of the fittest' mentality I spoke of earlier, I think that the lack of one for the winners makes them considerably more alien, both to sinners and to us the audience.
And that does reflect in their appearance. Goodness is either cute and cuddly, Disney-like animals, or it's said to be bland and boring, or it's just....hard to relate to. A "couldn't be me." "It would be nice to do, but." And I like that Heaven's designs are really different to Hell's because of this, and I also like how Heaven as a whole treats people.
Their good acts are already distant and remote to us, but Heaven seems to take this form of 'otherness' and dilutes it further with the way they treat winners, the childlike entertainments they arrange, the wilful ignorance they're kept in. Their lives are so different to anyone else's, devoid of the problems we experience and encounter, rendering them so far away from anything else in the Hazbin universe. Do winners have secret powers they're unaware of, purely because of the way Heaven is and the fact no one ever has to use them?
And that makes for a really interesting setup, actually, when you think about it. Hell is clearly a form of exaggerated Earth, but what is Heaven exaggerating? It's so difficult for anyone to imagine a utopia. Utopias have a very, very long history in the English canon at least (yes, yes, 'canon is dead,' I'm aware, but bear with me.) You've got Thomas More's Utopia, Milton's Paradise Lost. You've even got Aldous Huxley's The Island. But there's always a certain stench of artificiality about it - we can't quite get our heads around what we're proposing, even in imaginary spaces.
I'd be fascinated to know if we get more insight into winners in series 3, even just following a winner who sees with horror Vox's broadcast and the way their afterlife changes as a result. Let's not forget, in the words of Rosie, that this is the end of an era in Heaven, where actions do have consequences again, and where social inequality still exists - and secretly always did.
It makes me want to write a fic, actually.
But just as Hell is changed by Emily and Charlie saving people after Vox's breakdown, what will make winners reach out the other way?
Anyway, thanks for joining me and for reading this cure to insomnia!
I've reused this gif a TON for a lot of my analysises, so naturally I've seen it probably thousands of times at this point
(outside of just, y'know, rewatching this song because it slaps and the visuals have so much shit to unpack)
It was only yesterday as of writing this that I noticed that the last key frame of the wire after Vincent stretches it out was kinda in an unnatural position. I was like, "Huh, I know my professon, that has to be on purpose, but why? What's the reason or the symbolism for the final key frame of the wire animation being in the shape of a-"

Absolutely am feral over how Hazbin presents its characters.
People are so used to a character being extremely one-sided, flat and 2d. A villain is all bad, a hero is all good, there's no depth or nuance or facets to be explored. There's no hypocrisy or duality, but in Hazbin there is.
--You have Vox who is a power hungry megalomaniac, clearly with something going on (I have theories) but who is also really passionate and emotional and cares deeply for people he's close to and has clearly been able to maintain relationships (first with Alastor for a few years, then with Valentino for almost 40, and then Velvette).
--You got Valentio who is a human trafficker, rapist and drug dealer/addict but he's loyal as fuuuucccckkk. That man is the strongest ride or die you could ever have. Closeted boyfriend/Business partner having a whole suicide-bombing crashout over his situationship ex? Do we leave him? No way! We rip his head off to save him and everyone else than go home and give him the silent treatment for God knows how long. He speaks up for Velvette, he's a team player ("think about the future Val, don't let success break up the band") and clearly Val feels deeply like Vox does and is a talented artist in more than one medium (movies and drawing).
--Velvette is vicious and mean spirited and violent but once you move past that wall she's also solid, grounded in a way Vox and Val are not, and doesn't hold any grudge over having to pull them back down or direct one to mellow the other out. She gives Vodka Aunt vibes in a good way.
--Even Alastor for all his bullshit (I love him don't @ me). He's unhinged and bloodthirsty and manipulative and closed off but we've already seen he has fears and insecurities and some mild quality of being sentimental or attached to a degree (citing Niftys roach crown in his room and if we're all assuming right the microphone Vox likely gifted him). And something I don't see pointed out is he does have some concept of trust because he walked into being Vox's captive with that risk that anything could happen - though I'm positive he calculated the risk was nonexistent - and trusted Vox with his wellbeing whether even he realized it or not. He trusted Vox to not do anything, trusted Vox to not let Val or Vel do anything. Trusted that he wouldn't come out of it worse for the wear. That says a lot. And Alastor is still the most enigmatic so I'm excited for Season 3 to show us more.
--Then Charlie who is positive and driven and passionate but clumsy and a touch egocentric and prideful but still compassionate and insecure, too. She's hard-working but short-sighted, friendly but more guarded than she let's on.
Like I could go on but these characters are actually REALLY WELL rounded whether some of the fandom sees it or not. And it's nice to see these characters that are supposed to be bad or good having contrasting qualities that real life humans do because it's so important to see a person as a whole rounded human and sometimes characters in shows can give us that stepping stone to seeing beyond one quality or another. Hazbin does it to an extreme because they're in Hell for really bad stuff but I think the idea is to see that people and society are all a lot more shades of grey and a lot less black and white than we always imagine it is.
(My new hazbin/RadioStatic aideblog is @purplebleedseternal where I'll be posting stuff like this from now on)
Because the world needs more whimsy and why not marry the two franchises that absolutely cannot and will not meet anytime soon? Let's face it: Disney meeting Hazbin would be awful. People would die. There would be tears. There would be much crying, wailing and gnashing of teeth. But let's suspend our disbelief and have a look at what could be a really, really cursed crossover!
This was inspired, by the way, by @cynthesia07's amazing fanart of Charlie as Ariel here! Please like and reblog, it's amazing.
Charlie - Ariel
Charlie too wants to be āpart of their world,' just like Ariel. Unlike Ariel, she decided that the world she wanted to be a part of was one full of misery and murder. But she too didn't listen to anyone who wanted to tell her and forged ahead - and just like Ariel, she fell in love with one of the outsiders. Ariel didn't go quite so far as to go for a man who straight-up murdered mermaids, but it's not that far off. And, like Ariel, Charlie also has a difficult relationship with her dad.
Vaggie - Merida
The fierce and headstrong Merida is a perfect match for Vaggie. Like Merida, Vaggie refuses to simply go along with her intended purpose and vows to change her fate. Merida likes weapons, as does Vaggie of course! But they both share the same fiercely independent nature. Adam and Mor'du also make for interesting parallels, as relics of a time long past where things had gone wrong long ago. Rather than repeating the same mistakes, Vaggie and Merida both choose their own path, even if it's not traditional.
Lucifer - Elsa
Lucifer stands in for the similarly melancholy and isolationist Elsa! Heavy is the head that wears the crown and Elsa and Lucifer share that same heavy burden of responsibility and knowing how it is to be ostracised and alone, especially when that isolation comes from your own family. (While with Elsa it was for her own safety and that of her sister's - I think we can all say that the Arendelle royal family desperately needed a child psychologist.) Lucifer, like Elsa, has incredible power but doesn't always use it. He also cares deeply about his family.
Niffty - Cinderella
Cinderella, queen of housekeeping! Niffty and Cinderella share an affinity with mice/rats respectively. Despite being made to work by her wicked stepmother, Cinderella still puts her heart and soul into her work and keeps her home spick and span, much like a certain pint-sized cleaner who, um, "likes being forced". I can also see Baxter putting every scientific atom in his body into forensically scanning that glass slipper and finding Niffty through some obscure tracking of a cleaning product molecule stuck on the sole.
Angel - Aurora
Angel, Angel, Angel, sleepwalking into chaos - remind you of anyone? Angel is Aurora, the princess famous for, um, not doing much but falling asleep. Angel is of course hypnotised by Vox and is stuck in a living nightmare. Time will tell if Husk will be his Prince Philip. (Here's hoping.) Valentino's constant search for Angel Dust and badgering him to return to the Hotel is also very similar to the mad search Maleficent embarks on to find the now teenage princess.
Husk - Rapunzel
Husk and Rapunzel are two feisty characters who are held in bondage. I can see Husk wielding a frying pan, can you? Rapunzelās hair is both the source of her power and also the thing literally holding her down, and just like her, Huskās gambling affinity is both his power and his weakness - something that he can never quite put down, but needs to if he can progress. Maybe Husk will have to cut himself off from his vices as much as Rapunzel needs to cut her hair to be free of its influence. But I can see Rapunzel learning a few magic tricks to pass the time up in her tower, can you?
Alastor - Belle
Now I wanted Husk to be Belle, but Alastorās recent arc with Vox clinched it. He, like Belle, walks into a scenario where he willingly opts to be held prisoner, and manages to talk his way out of it. He and Belle also share a similar 'outsider' status within their own town, being declared as odd or different for acting outside of the supposed expectations for their demographic - Alastor as a mixed-race man, Belle as a woman.
Velvette - Tiana
Like Vel, Tiana is an entrepreneurial woman with her heart set on her own business. Sadly Velvette is nowhere near as kind and lovely as Tiana, but they both share the same drive to succeed on their own terms. The plot point of Vodou dolls* is vaaaaguely similar to Velvette's own doll-like Hell persona. It's a weaker link, but it's still there. Almost There, you could say. I'm so funny.
*I think Vodou is the right spelling but please correct me if not!
Vox - Anna
Vox as Anna? Really? Hear me out. In particular I mean Anna from For the First Time in Forever, that instant earworm that's all about an idealistic form of what life will be like once the gates open, and, also, the importance of a romantic partner. Like Anna, Vox is just a little out of touch but is always striving to be with the people. Heās a bit of an oddball, got obsessions, and fails frequently in his urge to ābe somebody.ā There's always someone better for Anna in the form of her sister Elsa and in the first bit of the film she's this elusive figure who always manages to do better than Anna does, always knows what the social cues are and seemingly how to behave (even though we later find out she's just as traumatised as Anna is, just differently). For Vox of course this figure is Alastor.
And no, there is definitely no Disney Princess for Valentino. There really, really isn't. xD I tried.
I have just finished a massive meta on Lute's song Gravity, but I still want to point out a piece of symbolism linked to this character, which loosely ties with the entertainment motif present in Hazbin Hotel.
Differently from many other characters, Lute is not associated to a kind of art, a type of music, a style of performing or a musical movie. She is instead a musical instrument: the lute.
This choice emphasizes how Lute sees herself as nothing, but Adam's instrument. She is Adam's weapon and lives to satisfy him. This is why she is his right-hand woman, his lieutenant (Lute :P).
Thematically, this results in Lute repeating the "eye for an eye" mantra as a broken record.
Musically, this is why Lute's Gravity is stylistically a rock song, like Hell Is Forever. Lute is simply taking Adam's ideals and radicalizing them through her desperation and pain.
I think this piece of symbolism fits Adam and Lute perfectly. On the one hand Adam is a rock'n roll angel and his primary weapon is a guitar. On the other hand lutes are musical instruments associated with angels.
Now, lutes and guitars are not the same instrument, but they still share enough similarities that it is easy to see how Lute is meant to represent Adam's weapon. Moreover, this idea is supported by the story itself. In Storyteller, Lute trashes one of Adam's old guitars and contemplates it, as she is unable to properly express her feelings:
Lute:Ā I never got to tell you thatā
Adam:Ā You think I didn't already know?
Lute:Ā Did you?
Adam:Ā No fucking idea. If you don't know, I don't know, babe.
It is pretty obvious Adam's guitar represents Lute's broken sense of self and her shattered mind. She is lashing out at Adam's things, other people and herself because she is unable to cope. That said, not everything is lost for her:
Abel:Ā Hey, Miss Lute. Can I call you that? Sorry to, uh, interrupt your, uh, freaky in the dark time. I was hoping to maybe get one of my dad's old guitars, you know? To remember him by.
Abel said he would like to get one of Adam's old guitars to remember him. Who knows? Maybe the "guitar" he is meant to take care of is Lute herself, as they are the only two people grieving Adam. Maybe Abel could help Lute rebuild a new and better sense of self (after she ends spiraling cause we are not there yet lol). Similarly, maybe Lute can help Abel to become a better man than Adam was.
Gonna get back on my bullshit with an Alastor meta that to the best of my knowledge no one shares and lose you all immediately, so here goes.
Fatherless Alastor. No, not a childhood abuse/background domestic violence thing leading to abandonment. No dad, ever. A single mother who raised him with the support of a large extended family (and invariably, all of those who pitched in were women, aunts and great aunts and a grandmother and possibly older cousins) but no one else at home. Just a mother, or arguably a number of mothers, whoāby the time that Alastor was of an age to start wonderingātold him frankly that the person that he could call his father hadnāt done anything to earn the title and wasnāt what you would call a decent man at all.
And Alastorās mother taking that kind of an approach, in general, to any number of unpleasant facts of life. Calling herself a realist and arming Alastor for the reality that, in this world of theirs, he would find no shortage of horrible people doing horrible things, who wouldnāt be changed by a kind heart or an open mind. And reinforcing, over time, that the only thing there was to do about it was to be alert, be polite, be prepared, and criticallyābecause hurting about something has never made it any better, and because they are not the type of people to be cast easily into this roleānot become a victim.
And Alastor who, to his motherās credit, has never seen a shred of evidence to the contrary, not in thirty-or-so years alive or many more in hell.
And who may have taken that directive a tiny step further than she intended, for any number of reasons. Because itās difficult not to become a victim and to be a good person. Because of some ingrained call to violence that has nothing to do with his mother or the other people that he called his family, but stuck in anyway. Because perhaps he got a bit angry about the state of things, in his youth, and perhaps became a little bit too talented at making them right to stop once he got started. And maybe it was borderline-justified the first time, but by the tenth time it was just fun.
And anyway, heās not the victim! Being the victim has always seemed horrible, but it wouldn't be so easy to find horrible men if being horrible weren't terribly entertaining.
And Alastor who, on meeting Charlie, was astounded that neither of her parents (of which she supposedly has two) imparted the obvious and critical lesson that this place is full of horrible people doing horrible thingsāall the worst ones Alastor encountered in his life, and several of whom he even chased down here.
Alastor who, with a sense of exasperation, slots himself in to catch Charlie up on that reality, if her hotel venture doesnāt do the job well enough itself. Alastor who reacts to Lucifer with such overwhelming prejudice not just because of the immediate disrespect, but also because heās arguably doing worse of a job at fatherhood than Alastor previously imagined possibleānot having the decency to be completely absent, but stringing his daughter along without doing any of the actual work.
Alastor who would, at this point, react to Lilith the same way.

So I got around to mapping and trying to guess where Vox's body would be underneath his clothing and yeah he is basically undeniably much smaller in the past.
This raises some very concerning questions about why this is the case, considering his history of changing his appearance, even to his own discomfort, if he believes he will appeal to others more. (The Best example him giving up his sight when human)
Here's some examples with his demon form
Past (1950s)
Past (1970s)
(Unknown time period, likely the 60s?)
Present (2020s)
Ngl...Something could legitimately be up here. This kinda seems to be on purpose because it's consistent.
Just had a conversation with my father about golf as he is a golf player and he gave me a history lesson shepherds in Scotland invented golf originally by using their shepherdās crooks to hit rocks across the glens into holes because it gave them something to use
They used their crooks to play golf!!!
Edit: Omg they used rocks I just realized that
