I DIDN’T LEARN ABOUT THIS IN DRIVING SCHOOL
Stop says the red light, go says the green
Wait says the yellow light, twinkling in between.

I LOVE THIS GUY.
All those "spend just 35 minutes doing a bunch of really hard exercises and you'll feel great forever!" videos are really discouraging. I usually end up doing like, 2 minutes of some of his while waiting for my shower to heat up, and ykw?
That's 2 minutes more than I would have done otherwise.
oh hey I have a thing like that last one that I like to do sometimes, but I do it lying down in bed. it's a very satisfying pop/shift in my hips/lower back, but doesn't always work. maybe I will try his version and see if it is more effective for me

inspired by a rant i was going on elsewhere bc someone tweeted something very stupid and uninformed about hamlet and it got my back up as someone who took two single-text-focus english literature courses in college and they were on wuthering heights and hamlet, i now put it to all of you on here:
what's "your" shakespeare play?
hamlet
macbeth
the tempest
merchant of venice
midsummer night's dream
twelfth night
richard iii
othello
julius caesar
king lear
another not listed (specify in tags) (i really just put my own top 10 here nbd)
i have no particular feelings about any shakespeare play/results tag

I saw and lost a post about JC Leyendecker’s dogs. Anyway here’s leyendecker horses
More….
And bonus provocative little jockey
You can see that the guy loved a gasping, open-mouthed equine, straining against the pressure of reins and harness, almost as much as he loved a crisp suit and a good bum. Even the children are hauling back on the bit.
The eroticism of riding hangs like a heat shimmer over them when collected together. Cú Chulainn’s horse is shown only as a thrashing flank, but the charioteer holds the reins tautly in control. Only a few horses are relaxed; one is the sad-looking paint (part of a Noble Savage stereotypical propaganda piece; the horse appears to be grieving.) The horses strain against leather and steel, rolling their eyes, muscles glowing.
Much like the homoeroticism of his work, I think there is something the artist was picking at here: straining against bondage, sharp bits hauling at soft mouths, tight reins in masterful (cruel) hands.

My favorite part of this post is that it implies Fred is the one saying “FUCK” because we know who typically says the other 4 things
which makes sense as he’s the one who actually legally owns it

Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.
Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.
There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.
i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.
I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case
The reality of how much damage AI mania is doing to our ability to run institutions effectively.
Not that most of us can DO anything about it, but at least this is validation that we're not crazy and the world really is running full tilt over a cliff. It's really refreshing to have someone describe this in plain language, with specifics. Someone on the ground, not an outside commenter: This was a terrible mistake. It backfired in the most predictable way imaginable – every lukewarm client that saw the chatbot in action, even with us telling them that it was not going to accomplish what they wanted, wanted to buy it immediately. Every other consideration, including millions of dollars that we could plausibly help them achieve by non-AI means, was swept aside. It was like a dark and terrible force seized control of their limbs, plunged their hands into their own chests, and presented their still-beating credit cards to us in grim supplication. We were so mortified by the inexplicable shift in energy that we (wisely) declined to take the money and ended the sales process, and soon thereafter removed Cortex from our list of demonstrations.

Shit is bad, but today, I learned that California's kelp forests have made a major comeback with the help of scientists, fishermen, and hammer wielding volunteers.
It's a win for habitat restoration. It's a win for marine life. It's a win for all of the people who helped make it happen.
It's a fucking win and it makes me happier than words can describe.
Pollution, warm oceans and hungry urchins devastated Pacific kelp. Now, thanks to divers with hammers, one of the world’s most successful re
Edit: now with video and link.
I love the fish watching with great interest.
I heard that smashing the urchins releases their reproductive materials, creating more. Was I misinformed?
In theory that can happen, and it was a concern they investigated when they were investigating the possibility of starting up this project. In practice it might occur to some degree but it wasn't found to be an actual problem. (They've been doing it for several urchin generations at this point-- if they'd been wrong and it was going to backfire, it would have by now.)
AFAIK, the main thing is simply that an urchin can spawn many, many times in its life; so smashing it still puts you waaay ahead by the numbers even if it does disperse its gametes that one final time.
